How and When to Start Teaching My Twin Toddlers?

I don't want to be one of those pushy parents trying to make my kid some kind of academic superstar, but I do strongly believe that in general we don't give our kids enough credit for what they are able to learn at an early age. I know that Montessori and other preschools start teaching children academic subjects as early as 18 months. I have 2 very active toddlers, one who is very talkative and can say about 5-8 words. He even points to things and says, "what's that". Then the other can say about 2-3 words, but uses more signs to communicate. They ar both very interested in the computer. Are there any books or programs that anyone can recommend to help me learn how to give them a headstart academically while still keeping it fun for us? They currently go to an in home child care center. We are not interested in changing that at this point.

What can I do next?

Your children are learning every minute of their lives. If you want your children to learn, talk to them, read to them, sing songs to them. There is really no magic potion for children. But the best thing you can do is introduce them to the world around them. Explain everything you do, they do, and they see. The little ones are like sponges, and even though they may not verbalize right now they will. Sign language is also helpful, I use the Sing in Time series. But as my developmental pediatrician reminded me last month, you have to make sure your children learn to verbalize.

so in summary read, sing, speak, and sign the same songs over and over, and read the same books over and over. But keep it fun, if it is too structured everyone ends up frustrated.

P.S. I just recently changed careers from being a classroom teacher a few months ago, so I do highly encourage anything that can build language and literacy skills.

Teach them "inside the funnel" as Baby Wise books say. :-) I am sure that you are right that they learn more than we give them credit for. Test the waters and then go from there. I say start now! Go for it Mom! You sound like a wondeful Mom.

You may want to go to USA Toys at Custer & Parker in Plano; it's a teacher's store and there are lots of educational workbooks and toys. I am not a teacher, so take this for what its worth - my opinion. I think that it's no so important WHAT you teach them, but rather that you keep them interested in learning. Think of it like working out - the more you do it the better you get at it - the brain is a muscle too. So everything you do is an opportunity for a learning experience and they don't have to know that they are "learning." Also take cues from them. My twins would often get very stimulated just by my taking them for a walk or taking them out to a restaurant to meet some friends. I could tell because they would blabber up a storm after that experience. So find out what stimulates them, and then do it. When you bathe them, start talking through what you are doing, naming the body parts as you go. As they get older, ask them to give you their hand, their foot, etc. and watch as they start responding. Before long, they can name their body parts...When you take them for a walk, start pointing out things and talking about them; talk about colors and shapes. Congratulations on getting your family started!

Hi, my twins (boy/girl) love books. I got them abc, numbers, shapes, colors. They both know the whole alphabet and can count to 15. I really like all the Leap Frog toys-they have leap pads for kids your age. I do believe even very young children have a huge capacity to learn--they'll go at their own pace.

They say sign language at an early age helps develop speech and language skills. Before you consider the computer, read Dr. A. Hart's book Thrilled to Death. In research they have found than if there is no boredom time, children are not creative...also over stimulation causes.....Oh, the book says it a lot better than I could and goes into more detail. Successful home-schooling Moms will tell you that time reading & talking together will build intelligence and bonds that last. Also, memorizing Bible verses will boosts intelligence and character. ENJOY every minute with your boys!
