My husband and I are planning a very rare getaway to New York City. We'll be there 3 nights and I'm looking for recommendations on where to stay. This will be my first time there and my husband has not been in 11 years so a lot has changed I'm sure. We want to stay some place nice that is in the heart of all the great shopping, dining etc. I've browsed a bit online but it's overwhelming the amount of options. Let me know if anyone has anything that stands out. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great suggestions! After checking out all your suggestions plus a few more properties, we have booked the Waldorf-Astoria for early November....can't wait!

The Plaza hotel...ok that might be over your budget. We stayed at the Omni Berkshire place (21 East 52nd Street at Madison Ave) last time we went...it was nice because it is walking distance from Central Park, St. Paul Cathedral, The Rockafellar (great observatory deck), and a little longer walk to Time Square & Broadway). You will need a taxi to go see China town/little Italy & Battery Park/Statue of Liberty.

*I would call Omni first to ask if there is construction going on around the hotel so you don't wake up to a jackhammer at 6am.

There were cafe's a block in every direction from the hotel. There was a Hartland Brewery Chop House? around time square that was surprisingly good...and their beer sampler was fun to try.

If you do the statue of liberty fairy, the line is long and the last fairy is early in the day...4:00pm and you can't stop at Ellis Island?

Sorry, I guess I got a little carried away. There is so much to do it is unbelievable...let me know if you want to hear more suggestions.

We LOVED the Waldorf Astoria. Yes, it was a splurge but it was NY and we enjoyed the entire experience. We went non-stop to attempt to see and do as much as possible while we were there.

Enjoy your trip!!

We stayed at the W on Park Avenue. Really nice with great views. Rooms are pretty small, but I think that is the norm in NYC. Very clean and smelled of aromatherapy. Nice bar downstairs too. Great restaurants nearby.

We've been several times and it is overwhelming to pick a place. I'm not sure how much you are willing to spend b/c that is the main factor. We have stayed at the Rihga Royal (now the London) http://www.rihgaroyalny.com/which is very very nice but pricey. We got it for half price a couple years back and took advantage.

The other hotel we stay at is Park Central which is really nice. Its basic but rooms are clean, staff is nice and helpful and it is around lots of stuff. It has a great lobby bar that alot of people come to. We had a drink there every night and it felt like we were locals. The bar was a huge plus. http://www.parkcentralny.com/

Sometimes you can't go wrong with a big hotel chain such as the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. But smaller boutique hotels will have a lot more charm. We always try and remember that you really only are in your hotel to sleep since you'll be out and about during the day.

Good luck! NYC is fabulous! You will love it. The Museum of Modern Art is nice if you want to take in something like that and if you can at least see one show (play or musical). The concierges at the hotels are great about getting reservations books so check with them on the latest and greatest restaurants. A couple years back we went to a place called GOOD http://www.goodrestaurantnyc.com/ - it was great atmosphere...small and quaint. You might like it.

Have a great time!!!
