we have put together so many cheap options PLUS you can hand them to the next kid!
So my son has fallen in love with Hot Wheels! The reviews online have been not so great, and the track sets are not cheap. What has been your experience with Hot Wheels, and is there a track set you would recommend? My son will be turning 6 this summer and I am looking to try to find a track set for him that will work and wont get him frustrated, as he does that easily! :-)
Any input would be great!
Thanks in advance.

My son who just turned 4 Loves them and he has about 100 cars. he has been collecting them since his 3ed birhtday. we Love all the tracks and most of them connect together. he even knows how to connect them. I see nothing worng with them. All little boys love them. So let him have fun and start collection them.
we have too many sets-and they all work together. one of the 1st things we had was a 4 car track that basicallly folded in on it self. so there was no assembly. basically is was just a slope down. it was a big hit.
I got a starter set at Toys R Us for about $20 (it's called the Track Pack). My guy loves to build, we've stil got a ton of the Thomas stuff, so I was hesitant to buy even more toys with lots of pieces. It's just enough track to play with and not become overwhelmed. Chances are too, if you have a b-day party, someone will give him some since there's not that much out there for boys it seems. Hope this helped.
Just find the most simple set you can find, but get plenty of track. We always end up playing with just the tracks and the rest of the 'set' gets wasted, if it ever even worked at all. This strategy will save some money too! : 0
My guy loved his Hot Wheels. As for the track sets, I found that the really cool, expensive ones never performed like on TV. Ultimately, he always ended up playing with two tracks, clamped to a table/chair and racing the different cars against each other until there was a "Grand Prize Winner". With all the cars that he had this could take hours.
Happy hot wheelin'

My son is 2 but loves Hot Wheels (and the less expensive Matchbox cars) too! Ok, my hubby's been chomping at the bit to introduce Hot Wheels to our son for the last 2 years. He got the Loop and Launch at Target; it was just like the one he had when he was a kid. It's nothing special, just a long track with a loop in it and a clamp you can attach to a bookcase or dresser or something. But pair that up with building blocks or legos and you have hours of creativity and entertainment. My son is learning all sorts of ways to launch his cars. We also got the Jurassic Starter Set, but it's a little too complicated for him (remember he's only 2) and he'd rather just play with the dinosaur. He's been begging me for the Color Shifters he saw on TV (yikes, product placement already working on a 2 year old), I did buy it and am saving it as a "hello" gift from his baby sister.
My take on Hot Wheels:
They are worth the money and is something my kids (one in particular) played with for a very long time...like 12/13 y/o. My advice to you would be to get a HUGE plastic container w/ good lid and start buying any and all that come on sale. The tracks are interchangeable and we have never had a problem with any of them. Easy to assemble.
I haven't bought any in the last 2 years so I am not sure what specific sets are out there but we loved all the kinds w/animals like dinosaurs eating the cars...any w/loops are cool...heck they were all cool in our opinion. Hours of entertainment. And you should have seen some of the tracks my kid put together...took up our whole basement family room floor!
We gave away a dishwasher size box full of them when my youngest stepson turned 13 and if I had had any forethought, I would have saved them for my own set of boys...I could kick myself
My boys love hot wheels. Thier great, because they can use their imaginantion. The tracks however we haven't had great success. They usually will not stay together. What we like the best are the rugs with road designs and wooden blocks. This way they can make airports, hotels, firestations ect. Good luck
J is finally 3 so he can have hot wheels now, they are a choke hazard and he had not been allowed. We have been buying the cars at walmart and can occassionally find the packages of track priced very cheap too. We plan on investing time and money into the whole world of hot wheels, when I look on ebay, all those big monstous toy garages, mountains, sets, still hold value for resale. I feel like it won't be wasted money because whe he outgrows them it will be time for another child to have them or we can sell them at a consignment sale or online.
