Hot Sulphur Springs?

I am looking for a place to take my parents when they come visit us here in Denver in early March. I'm looking for a quick day trip or a short getaway. I thought a hot spring might be nice for a night. I've been to Glenwood Springs before, so I thought I would try another. Has anyone been to Hot Sulphur Springs? Is it nice for families? It would be my husband and I, our two kids (under 3) and my parents (60's). Is it hard to get to in winter? Where is a good place to stay?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi E.,

I've been to Hot Sulphur Springs a couple years ago. I'm also planning another day trip there in March. It's a really nice, clean little resort. Prices are fairly inexpensive, $16 I think. The resort is set up in this kind of neat, quirky way. There are a couple swimming pools with the water in them, they vary in temp, that would be good for the kids. There are also a bunch of different little hot tubs and concrete pool that have the water in them of hotter temps for adults. Here is the link, so you can check it out. http://www.hotsulphursprings.com/

I've also been doing some checking and there are a couple little hotels in the town, along with the one associated with the resort. The resort one is most expensive, I think it was going to be about $100 or so for one night. The other two were between $45-55 for one night. If you get on a search engine and put accomodations for Hot Sulphur Springs in it, you'll find the hotels I did.

Getting there isn't too bad. You go over the pass into Winter Park, past the turn-off for Grand Lake. I think it's about an hour and forty five minutes or so.

I hope this helps! Enjoy your parents stay. K.

Hot Sulphur is my favorite hot springs. My 16 yr old daughter and I go there 6 or so times a year to regenerate. It is between Granby and Kremling on Hwy 40, taking Berthoud Pass to get there. On a good day, it's about 1. 45 min. The only place I stay is on site. there is a train track that goes through it so you have to wear ear plugs, which I do anyway. The lodging is clean, no tvs, no phones. there are 22 outdoor pools, 4 of them (one is covered) are separated away for children/families, the others are adult, 16 and over. You can expect cold weather in March. they do a pretty good job of keeping the walk ways salted. You will be walking up and down some sort of stairs with guardrails to get to a variety of pools. We eat at the County Seat Grill, the only place to eat in Hot Sulphur. Two things come to mind for a day trip. The mineral springs are designed to detox, and we will often feel quite relaxed by the end of the day. Driving home the same day can feel like a burden. Your parents don't sound like they are in Colorado, so you need to be sure their water intake and your and your childrens' is high, high, high, so they don't feel faint, or get altitude sick. The springs does not do a good job in my opinion of providing the amount of water I personally indulge in when I go. My daughter and I take a 2 1/2 gallon jug with us, so that tells you how much we are prepared to drink over a night's stay.

Indian Hot Springs, in Idaho Springs, just 30 miles up 1-70 has a large indoor swimming pool that your parents and children may also feel comfortable, and is a much better choice for a quick day trip. You also have a variety of restaurants in Idaho Springs to eat afterward. there is logding on site, I find the hotel to be drap. there are also non co-ed caves which adults can soak in, children are not allowed, for a quiet retreat. It is a nude experience because clothing fibers will clog the filters. the women's is nice, I've never been in the mens. Good luck on your hot springs journey, I have enjoyed hot springs all my life and have taken my daughter with me as well. Good luck. B.

I've been to Hot Sulpher Springs as well. It's nice and fun for adults... we were there in the winter and did not see any kids there??

Just a warning: you WILL smell like sulpher when you leave and it took a couple of washings to get the sulpher smell out of our suits. :)

E.,

Hot Sulpher springs is awesome. You will enjoy the various hots spring pools and they have a bigger pool that you can take your kids to. You can also book various treatments or massages. You can stay at many places Winter Park, Fraser, Granby. A good way to find a place to stay is at www.vrbo.com (we actually own a condo in WP and advertise it on this website) There is also a tubing hill in WP/Fraser that would be fun to take your kids to also. Hope that helps.

Dear E., Our favorite place to go is Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. They have pools, but the coolest thing is that you can also sit right in the mountain stream. We have been there when the snow is falling, and the trees are covered with snow, and we're in the stream all warm!! It's great for pictures! People have taken rocks and made little pools along the side of the stream. You can customize the temperature by moving the rocks to let more mountain water in the pool, or close it off to have more of the hot spring water come in. i love it for kids because they can play in the sand and with the small rocks and stones as you relax in the water. You can find rocks to serve as your "pillow". Some pools are big enough for 8 or 10 people, and some are just right for two. When I go with teens, I make up competitions...like, how many complete push ups can you do in the mountain stream before you freeze, or who can get across the stream to the other side. Afterwards we like to go for ice cream in Buena Vista. There are some times when the mountain stream is closed, because there is too much water from the snow melt, so I always call ahead. I think that it is usually in June or late May when this happens.Nathrop, Co 1-888-395-7799 ~Marlene
