We just had our appointment with the pediatric urologist and were informed that our son has what they call a horseshoe kidney. From what research I have done it isn't totally rare...occurs in every 1 out of 500 births... Have you ever heard of this? Just curious! You can see what they look like on our blog at:

So What Happened?

Jackie - That makes me feel a little better! I was so worried about everything. I went out and bought a carseat that has the 5 point harness that goes up to 150 lbs. Yes...I went all out. :/ I read that the most dangerous thing besides sports was car seatbelts...how they go across your abdomen. All I was thinking about that if I had an accident or someone hit me that it would be my fault if the seatbelt hurt him. I know he cannot live in a carseat forever...but he can for a while longer ;)

My brother has one. He is perfectly healthy in every way.

The only thing they told my parents to keep in the back of thier mind is that if he would ever have kidney failure while most of us can fall back on our other one he wont have one to fall back on, if one goes they both go. But he is 33 and has never had a problem.

Thanks for the pic, I have never seen one :)

My cousin had this, is was many years ago, his kids are nearly old enough to be young grandparents....

He had to do dialysis and other treatments to stay alive and finally decided he was tired of it and allowed himself to die. He didn't tell anyone he needed to go to the doc and they didn't realize until it was too late and he was gone.

It was many years ago and I am sure that treatment is much different now. They didn't even have transplants or anything like that then.

My hubby has this. He is 47, drinks on occasion (more then I would like, lol) and is just fine. His doc at the time (in his childhood) had my MIL so worried about it. They said he wouldn’t be able to play sports. He has been playing hockey since he was a kid and still does.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep him healthy like any other child and he will be just fine.
