I have an almost 2 yo little girl, a couple weeks ago she got a really really bad diaper rash with a low grade fever and diarrhea. She went to her regular dr and he put her on a cream, didnt do anything for her. I was putting corn starch on her after every diaper change and it seemed to take the redness and heat away. Two weeks later it comes back ten times worse. We take her back to a different dr and he gives her a cream and amoxicillian for an ear infection. So now here we are she has finished both the amoxicillian and n-statin. Rash was gone over the weekend no fever happy go lucky baby. Now her bio mom is saying the rash is back and the diarrhea is horrible in smell. We use huggies and the bio mom uses Pampers. She also gave her milk yesterday and we do not give her milk. What could possibly be causing this? Her diet consists of the normal stuff. She does nto like green beans or mashed potatoes or milk but loves cheese. We are stumped at what could possibly be causing this. We have her for our weekend and everything is fine. She goes to bio moms and the rash comes back and she gets sick. Could the difference in diapers be causing this? Could she have a milk allergy? Could all the medicine that bio mom gives her for every little symptom be casuing this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the helpful pointers!!!! We have actually started potty training with her and she did good for a little bit and we told the mom we were potty training and the baby refuses now to sit on her potty. We just let her run around the house withouth a diaper now...Carpets are super clean regularly now lol....I told my fiance about the yeast infection and the dirrhea continuing even after the anti biotic is done and our pedi had actually said a possible yeast from anti biotic but we figured she was fine over the weekend as she didnt have diarrhea and or any of the rash....I also told him to have her go back to the dr and make sure it isnt yeast and we will check to see if the molars are coming in.....Thanks again this website rocks!!!!!

Could be a number of things, but the first thing that came to me was a yeast infection. My middle daughter had the worst diaper rash I've EVER seen and everything I tried would work for a couple of days, then the rash would come back. My doctor finally gave her Nystatin and within a day it cleared up and was gone by the 3rd day.

First, it can't be a milk allergy if she's eating milk products like cheese and such. Couldn't be the diapers giving her diarrhea, or rash for that matter or she would have had a problem from birth. If the mom has been giving her different meds her whole life I can't see it would be that. Just because the rash came back when she went back home doesn't mean it's something the bio mom did or didn't do. I think it's something internal that the doctor isn't catching yet. Did they check for a yeast infection? I'd have them do some internal checking. Could be digestive or intestinal infection or bug.

Diarrhea can really burn little baby butts.

My daughter developed the worst rash I'd ever seen. I took her to the doctor and it turned out she was allergic to disposables. I switched to cloth, but she rarely had a diaper on because I was so afraid of the rash returning. I aired her little hiney out more than she had a diaper. I put her in cotton training panties and put her on the potty. She was potty trained really early because she associated diapers with her tushy hurting and she wanted no part of that.

My son didn't get diaper rashes because I didn't have diapers on him all the time either. He also potty trained really early.

It's hard to say exactly what's causing your baby's rash. It could be a combination of things. Let her little tush air out as much as possible. Don't use baby wipes. Use a luke warm, soft wash cloth. After a bout of diarrhea, put her in the tub or rinse her off really well and let her get thoroughly dry before putting another diaper on.

Hopefully, it will clear up soon.

Best wishes.

If she hasn't changed anything else in her diet or diapers and if she's had amoxicillin before, then she probably isn't allergic to milk or her diapers, or the antibiotic.
Maybe the timing with the antibiotic & the rash is coincidence. Is your daughter teething - getting her 2 year molars? Our almost 2 year old is just getting over a similar-sounding diaper rash. She wasn't otherwise sick, but just got a terrible diaper rash, to the point of bleeding! OUCH! It was bad for a few days, then cleared up, then came back bad over the weekend, but is better now. Turns out, those big molars just poked through yesterday. We use a thick cream of neosporin followed by thick desitin. Also bathed her twice a day instead of just once. Wipes really hurt her during diaper changes, so the bath just made sure she really got clean.
Anyway, just a possibility that you haven't gotten in your responses yet. Babies often get a really, horribly bad diaper rash when they're teething. Mine did at least.
Note: amoxicillin can cause loose bowel movements for several days after finishing the antibiotic. And diarrhea causes pretty bad diaper rash. And amoxicillin can cause yeast infections because it kills off all of the "good" bacteria on baby's skin, vagina, etc.

We use what our baby dr in tennesse recommended, you get it at the pharmacy at Walmart it is called Resinol, it is not a prescription, not expensive either. Actually is smells like a bandaid it works pretty well. Also butt paste works well. Sometimes, it is just time to potty train is what a dr had told me with my oldest daughter, there urine gets stronger as they get older and can actually "burn" there bottoms if on them for even a minute or two. Hope this helps!

I would guess the diarrhea is causing diaper rash. Got to change those diapers ASAP and put on diaper cream at every change until her tummy gets better.

But what really made me want to respond to this post is that it sounds to me like there is a bigger problem here. I can tell just from a few short paragraphs that you obviously have a problem with the "bio mom". Did you realize it comes across that clearly? We obviously dont know each other, but if I can pick up on that from a few sentences, you should probably consider that your boyfriends daughter will be able to pick up on that as well as she gets older. I dont know what the situation is, but if you plan to become part of this family, you will need to figure out a way to get over that. Like or not, she is the girls mother and will be in your lives for a very long time. The adults will need to get together and figure out how to spare this child from having to grow up with parents/step parents that hate each other. Seriously.

Put breastmilk on the diaper area and put her in cloth diapers for a few days. It could be food or from the diarrhea. Good luck and hope she is better soon.

Cheese is milk so it should not make a difference. The antibiotic can give her a yeast infection and that is hard to clear up. It's a totally different kind of rash.

The different diapers could be the problem, they use different perfumes and fillers.

Medicine can certainly cause this and so can antibiotics but it looks like she had it before the amoxicillin. You shouldn't mix some medications either so if one mother gives one and you give another it could be a problem. You should both go to the same doctor together and see if you can get to the bottom of it. No pun intended. :-)

It sounds to me like the baby isn't being changed soon enough. Diarrhea can do a number on a baby's butt. If it's not changed the second she goes, it can cause an infection immediately - also sounds like she could have a yeast infection, also caused by bacteria from their stools.

It's hard, but if there's anyway she could run around w/o a diaper (if she's two, she might be able to let you know if and when she has to go to the bathroom). Air it out - and also check with your doctor for the yeast infection. Don't use wipes, use a warm washcloth and make sure she is patted dry before rediapering her.

Don't think the meds would cause the diaper rash, but they could cause the diarrhea. Is the rash itchy? Poor baby, you both need to be consistent in the care of it and be on top of it so that she isn't sitting in a dirty diaper for even a minute longer than necessary. Good luck - Keep us posted!
