Home Made Baby Protien Drink like Pedisure

My DD has not gained any weight in the last 3 months, although she has gotten taller. At her 12 month checkup the doctor was a little concerned, so we did some tests. She mentioned Pedisure once a day, but I am not comfortable with how much sugar it contains. Does anyone have a homemade recipe for a protein shake for babies? I was thinking whole milk, protein powder of some sort and a little honey? I should state she is breastfed, no milk/formula and eats table foods all day, she is just obviously not getting enough calories/protein.

What can I do next?

Only breastfed?
I would go with what the Dr suggest, even though I very rarely take my children to the Dr.
I do give my son (6) protein drink but I mix mine with water. He drinks them about three times a week and has been doing so from the age of three. I only use one and you can contact me if you need more info

Do you know what will fatten a kid up in no time? Rice Water. All my hispanic friends encouraged me to do it with my scrawny son, and in no time, he was a heavy weight, but in a good way!

Boil rice the old fashioned way. Drain the water into a pitcher. Add regular sugar to taste, so that the water is like a koolaid, but rice water instead. Cool to room temperature, then serve at whatever temperature you can get your child to drink. Some kids hate cold drinks, others hate room temp drinks. Give your child 8 ounces of this 2 times a day and he should be fattened up in a few weeks. In a healthy, delicious way!

If the doctor thinks Pedisure would be a good route I'd go that way until you do get some good recipes that your more comfortable with. Don't be afraid of sugar in healthy drinks like that for kids. Besides the sugars are broken down into carbs that can be burnt for energy in a young body. If kids have healthy eating habit than worrying about a little sugar versus worrying about your baby gaining weight, I think the sugar shouldn't be the issue here.

Good luck.

I don't have any recipes, but I just wanted to ease your fears, my little girl started drinking Pediasure after I stopped breast feeding her after her 1st birthday, and she is very healthy she is tall for her age(she is 3 but looks like a 5 year old), strong, doesn't get sick often, and I get asked by other moms what I feed her and I highly recommend Pediasure. Don't worry about the sugar content it does not make them hyper or anything like that, my little girl is a normal active child but well behaved. It can be a little expensive though, so I buy it at Sam's is cheaper then buying them at grocery stores. I started giving her Pediasure because I didn't see what was so great about regular whole milk, which I feel just fattens them up.
One more thing her Pediatrician also comments on how healthy she is and her weight is normal since she is tall for her age. Hope this helps!

My breastfed daughter hit a plateau right around a year old, as well. My pediatrician was NOT concerned since she has hit all of her milestones, was active, and eating a wide variety of healthy foods--this is also the time when we were transitioning from almost all breastmilk to including solids. Is she walking yet? This increase in activity can also lead to a levelling off in weight gain.

I agree with you about not wanting the sugar--not to mention the multitude of other ingredients that I can't pronounce in Pediasure. It just isn't necessary when you can feed her real food and have the same outcome. Premade shakes are for those without the time or inclination to do otherwise.

Try a smoothie of 4 oz. whole milk, 1/2-1 teaspoon Brewer's Yeast, 1/2 banana, and 1T peanut butter (assuming no allergies or family history). It is a kiddie friendly version of a weight gain shake we used to make for my little brother when he needed to gain weight for wrestling.

Also...remember avocados, salmon, lentils, canola oil for great sources of healthy fat, calories, and protein.

I had an extremely high metabolism as a child, in fact, up until I had my second child at 25 I had a high one. I was 85 lbs before having my first, and, still less than 100 after having her. I still, after having my 3rd child just 2 wks ago, am barely over 100 lbs.
My point, is she healthy? Is she active? Does she slow signs of slow development? If you answered yes to the first two and no to the last, then, do not worry about trying to "fatten" her up. Let her enjoy her high metabolism. Get a second opinion. So she's skinny? What is the harm in that. Count her calories if you feel the need, and, as long as she is getting enough, then, no worries. When I was little, I remember all the tests because they were so worried about how skinny I always was, and, they never found a thing wrong with me. I loved being able to eat anything I wanted to without having to worry about gaining as a teen. You tryng forcing her to gain now, she may struggle with weight problems of the opposite of what she has now. Why do that to her?
