I use quick blue, you can find it at Sally beauty supply or probably any other beauty supply store. It is a fairly strong bleach so if you don't want it too dramatic I would only leave it in for 10-15 mins, 4-5$$. Good luck S..
I've done my own color for a long while. I have always been able to match my natural hair color with pretty much any brand and even my hairstylist says I do a good job. For me, in less than an hour and under $10 ... done! I'm now thinking about some highlights. Anyone do those on their own?? My color is dirty blonde/golden brown and I want some of the lighter highlights around face and lightly throughout. Suggestions on a brand, tips for timing, etc., would be greatly appreciated!
From the comments received, no home highlighting at this time! It sounds like a trip to the salon is the best, safest way to go. You never know until you ask right? Thanks for the past experiences and tips.

got highlights & lowlights this spring. Was a.o.k. for the first 2 months, but then my hair started frying. By the 6 month mark, I ended up getting 50% of my hair cut off. My stylist recommended that I do not do this again.
Took me by surprise! There are many, many women who regularly mess with their hair....& never have these issues. BooHoo!
I'm a hairstylist. Matching your natural color at home is easy. Doing highlights at home is not. I would not recommend it. Most horror stories I have to fix in the salon are from women attempting their own highlights. They typically end up looking like calico cats in extreme versions. In less extreme versions, there are usually little orange spots and stripes under the blonde, and the blonde color is usually in varying shades of 'doneness'. Any woman who tells you she does it at home and it looks great, is most likely deceiving herself and can't see all of the little spots and strips and discoloration like an observer can, b/c I have seen and hard it all, and it does not ever look great. I can do my own highlights, but I have been doing hair for 10+ years and have yearly continuing education. Even then, I know my limits and when to get them done in a salon.
Hi! My 2 cents is don't mess with it! I have naturally dark blonde hair so I cannot do an all-over haircolor and keep it looking natural. Back in the day, I tried some of the drugstore highlighting kits and it was a disaster! Now I have to fork out the $150 or so at least 2X per year. I think you are very lucky that you can do your own so well and it is so cheap. I vote on keeping status quo!!
I wanted to get some highlights as well just for fun. I don't color my hair , so was looking for something that would go with my natural hair color. I talked to a hairstylist at a reputed salon here. She suggested it's better not to get highlights done as it's extremely damaging to your hair. Just an FYI :)
