Highlight Hell!

I have very dark brown hair, with kind of a reddish tint, very long, almost waist length with a curl - it is very pretty, but I felt I needed a change. So I decided to have some highlights put in, just half a head, and I went to my MIL cousin, as she has been going to her for years. I asked her to put some subtle, sunkissed highlights in, nothing too dramatic as my hubby likes my hair the way it is. She said - "We will make you look like you have just been in the sun a little, nothing major" She has been a hairdresser about 40 years, so I thought she knew what she was doing...
She did the foil highlights, and I have never had highlights, but it seemed like a heck of a lot of foil on my head for a subtle look, then she sat me under a hot dryer for 20 minutes. When I left my hair was still wet, so I couldn't see too much - when I got home I almost died, the highlights are like a white blond, not even a yellowish blonde, it looks like I have gone gray overnight, they are all frizzy around my hairline, and I look like a freak - my son actually screamed when he saw me. I am so dissapointed - do these things fade at all? what can I do now - it's bleach, so there is no going back right?

What can I do next?

Oh no! I HATE bleach highlights AND they make hair feel like straw!

If you go to a salon, I'll bet they can tone them down for you.

That stinks. Sorry. Major bad hair day!

Whoa, she did a bad job.
She bleached your hair... not highlight it.

You have to have it corrected by a Professional.

Not all hairdressers, can do, coloring. Nor know how. It is a specialty. And colorists, have specialized training, in coloring.

Do not have it corrected by that same person. I would not trust her with my hair, anymore.

Your hair, got fried. That is why, it is now frizzy.... and she overly bleached your hair.

DO NOT do anything to it, by yourself. Go to a professional.
They can re-color your hair.

The problem with people that have been doing hair for forty years is they are using 40 yr old techniques! I often find young girls are much better at modern cuts, color, and style. Not straight out of school, but you get the point. Some salons have a dedicated colorist that will be able to give you what you want. Do some intense moisturizing from now on to prevent further breakage. And once you get it fixed, use color safe products because the color deposited on the highlights can be washed away by non-color safe products.

As many have stated - go to a salon - toner will add hue back in. I would not try and remedy yourself. Possibly consider some layers to pull any ends off that got really fried from bleach and intense conditioners to keep the toner on.
Good luck!

I always get blond highlight with the foil in my hair thick ones and my hair is the same color as yours.. I would call a hair salon. I go to fantastic sams and ask for a toner. They can put a toner in your hair..It will come out looking nice. It won't cost to much.

I think you canto to a salon and have them put s toner on your hair. Whatever color you would like, and it will only color the bleached parts. My suggestion would be to go to a different salon & explain exactly what happened so they can fix it. Don't worry, it IS fixable!! Sorry that happened to you!

ITA about the toner at Sallys. I like the Wella Color Charm series. I also would give this stylist a chance to fix it. Sallys sells huge tubs of cholesterol that are inexpensive and effective on bleached out hair. Good luck!

You can go to Sally's get a bottle of dark blonde semi color and mix it as the directions say. Also if you cousin has been doing hair for years she also could do it for you. There is no panic. It is now ruined just she brought it up lighter then you wanted. Hairdressers mess up color all the time. I did a neighbor once and could have fixed it instead she died it black and it looked awful. Even if it is a dark blonde should basically just change the lighted parts. Semi does not show a demarcation line. It wears off and less damaging then bleach or peroxided color. But I am sure your cousin would love to have the change to correct it. I was not happy she did not let me fix it. And with that much hair is a mess to do. She has a cape I am sure and would be able to get it more even. I would call her first tell her you did not want it that light and she would then purchase the products not probably charging you. Good luck. It is not the end of the world. I have messed up my own hair many times and found other ways to fix it in the process. I have had my license since 67. G. W

Okay, first, I'm a hairstylist, and this is totally fixable.

First, she would have to have lots of foil in your hair b/c it is waist length, though it sounds like she did go overboard. You probably would only need maybe 10-15 slices of foil for a subtle look. I never ever put bleach under a hot dryer... I usually use red lights which is a healthier for the hair and easy to control the of heating highlights.

What she did wrong, is she used too high of a developer... probably used a 40+ vol, when she should have used maybe a 30.... and she left the bleach on your hair way too long in too high of heat, so it's over-processed.

Be sure you do some deep conditioning.. but not on the day you get the color fixed.

Now, don't you fret... bleach doesn't fade, but it is very easy to cover up. Just go to a different stylist (b/c I wouldn't trust her) and have them tone the highlights for a more subtle look, maybe a light caramel color. They will likely need to even lo-light some natural color back in to add your depth back.

I agree with the other posts, it is also beneficial to call some salons and tell them the situation before you go so they can refer you to the right person. Also check Yelp for salon reviews. It's correctable, but unfortunate!
