High Prolactin Levels = Pregnancy?

In the Fall of 2007, my husband and I decided we were ready to conceive. I became pregnant right away, but suffered a miscarraige at 5 weeks. I knew I had high prolactin levels, but was unaware at the time that this could end a pregnancy early on. My endocrinologist recently perscribed parlodel to bring my prolactin levels down (they are consistently between 50-70 and a non-pregnant woman should have levels betweeen 3-30). I am going to have more blood work done in a few weeks to determine if the medication is lowering my prolactin levels, but am obviously worried about future pregnancies. I have also read that high prolactin may cause something called luteal phase defect. Has anyone ever dealt with high prolactin and achieving pregnancy? I have yet to make contact with anyone who has, so I would love to hear from you if you've experienced something similar.

What can I do next?

I know that a "luteal phase defect" means that the fertilized egg doesn't have enough time to implant itself to your uterine lining. A "luteal phase" is the days from ovulation until day 1 of your next cycle. Luteal phases are usually around 12 to 16 days, and anything fewer than 10 days is too short for the fertilized egg to implant, because obviously the uterine lining is shed during your period.

Good luck with conceiving! A great book to read is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. It's also helpful to chart your Basal Body Temperature (which the book explains.)

Hi A.:
God bless you, I know exactly what you are going through. Patience and prayers will be the keys here!

My prolactin level is currently and has been as high as 260 before infertility treatments (my endocrinologist used to cringe every time he got that reading back!). I used Prolactin (in fact, I was a guinea pig for Prolactin back in the day!), Clomid, had progesterone shots, and waited a long time for my body to even think of having cycles, much less having regular cycles. However, I did conceive and had a wonderful pregnancy resulting in my miracle daughter (she is now 15 1/2).

Keep ever diligent and let me know if there is anything you need to know about.

I had high prolactin levels (around 120) and was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor and had to have it surgically removed. My OB found the high level and then sent me to an endocrinologist for further testing (blood and MRI) and it's in the MRI he found the tumor. I guess it's very common for non-pregnant women with high prolactin to have these tumors, so if your level is high I'd recommend seeing a doctor.

A. - ask your endocrinologist or your OB to determine whether or not you have a pituitary microadenoma. (It's a benign growth on the pituitary gland.) These types of growths can actually excrete prolactin causing increased levels of prolactin in you, resulting in difficulty getting pregnant.

Do not fear though - they're fairly easy to treat and from what I understand, they are more common than one might expect.

Good Luck!!

I had high prolactin levels and it turned out to be a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). You might want to research PCOS and also ask your doctor about PCOS.

I'm glad that you are seeing an endocrinologist.
