My little guy will be 11 m/o on the 5th. About 10 days ago, he was diagnosed w/ viral stomatitis (herpes). Since then, the sores have shown up not only in and around his mouth (so much that it is difficult for him to eat) but on his back and just yesterday I found some on his genitals. I am taking him back into the dr. today because I was told if they show up anywhere else, we have to do blood work to see if there are any underlying causes for why he's not getting over this virus. I'm freaking out. Does anyone have any experience with this??

Thank you for your help in advance. :)

So What Happened?

Yes, Marie. This is not the STD. I'm sorry, I should have clarified that. It's basically a really awful case of cold sores and somehow they spread to his back and other places. Took him in for the bloodwork yesterday... apparently they are looking for auto-immune diseases. :(

Is this the same as the herpes that causes the common cold sore? We treat that one with L-lysine (available wherever common vitamins are sold) We have had super success with this, as well as treating shingles with it.

I suffer from HSV-1 and found out I was very low on L-lysine. I am also being checked for other genetic problems (I am 41 years old and have been sick/looking for answers for 2 years now). I am very sad to hear your little one is so very sick with this. But if JJ is really that sick, to the point that he's breaking out in sores all over his body (including genitals), then I applaud your doctor for looking for an underlying cause, because there is one.

Your boy probably is seriously deficient in something, or his body can't handle something. It almost sounds like maybe an immune problem. I will pray they will get to the bottom of why his body can't fight off the infection, and I am so glad the doctor is going above and beyond in trying to figure this out. I finally ended up going to see a naturopathic doctor, because conventional/allopathic doctors aren't interested in digging deeper and finding out what my problems are.

I did discover that I am very deficient in carnitine, which is biosynthesized in the liver and kidneys from L-lysine and methionine; I need to take extra (3,000 mg/day) L-lysine in order to keep my HSV-1 virus/infections from coming back. It's a place to point the doctor...

Keep the faith, and please keep us posted/updated on what the doctors find out. I'd be curious to know.

How does an 11 months old get herpes? Was it passed on to him during his birth and he is just now having outbreaks?

I'm afraid I don't have any experience with Herpes Stomatitis, but I just wanted to respond to Marie Chantel: this is the viral infection that causes cold sores and is NOT sexually transmitted. Here is a little information about it:

Good luck and I hope your baby feels better soon.
