My brother got them on a trip to Florida. He has gone through around 20 now. So, I can give you all the secrets to killing them but have no idea how to keep them alive.
We got 3 hermit crabs at the beach. We like them--they're fun to watch and play with.
We got "hermit crab food" with them (and at the rate they "eat" it will likely last a long time!) but wondering what else to feed them.
My SIL said theirs ate lettuce so we've been putting a little lettuce in every day.
What else do they like to eat?
I know they love warm, humid temps. And enjoy the occasional misting.
Other tips?
Oh! I found a crab leg in the bottom of the cage this a.m. Is this normal? The one that apparently lost it seems fine.

Ours lived for years on hermit crab food from the pet store and lettuce. You will need to get them bigger shells for them to climb into or they will die. As they grow, they need a bigger shell. They run into them at night when no O. sees them. You will also need a sponge that you keep wet for them to drink from. You can get bigger shells and a sea sponge from a pet store.
Not sure about food, BUT, when I had hermit crabs, they would lose a leg once in a while, OR molt (sp?) the skin on their legs, but it looked just like the real thing... so I'm pretty sure that's okay ;)
They are fun, I think we need some now ;) I used to paint their shells with nailpolish, LOL!
LMAO @ JO!!!!! ;)
you must bathe them in salt water, not tap water. You can make your own or add the drops from the pet store. Do not use a heat lamp. A store employee tried to sell us a heat lamp for a reptile that would have cooked it.
As a kid I remember mine always loved peanut butter!!!
You can give them any soft vegetables. It's fun to see what they will eat and what they won't eat.
