Hemorrhoids, Maybe?

Hello. I am 8 weeks pregnant with my fourth child, and I think I may have hemorrhoids. I don't know for sure, and can't get into my doctor for almost another 3 weeks, but I am miserable. There is no bleeding, but I am very itchy and uncomfortable. I have hardly slept in days because I have been so uncomfortable. I never had problems like this before, and it actually started right before I got pregnant. For a while I was using Preparation H, but didn't want to overuse it. Ice provides relief sometimes, but only for a few minutes. Same thing with a warm bath. I am not constipated, drink lots of water, etc. I had never heard of the, so early in pregnancy before. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any ideas on what else might be the problem? I am so miserable I will probably be calling my doctor in tears when the office opens this afternoon!!

What can I do next?

You can use Witch Hazel for a little relief. Also buy the round cotton pads used for makeup removal--usually sold with cotton balls. Soak a pad or 2 with witch hazel and put against the hemorroids for a few minutes or so. It definitely helps.

Suppositories work. It takes time. And yeah, it happens during pregnancy.

If you have a little footstool to keep in the bathroom, do that, and put your feet up when you go. Or sit with one foot up on your knee, as though your legs were crossed. Our bodies are made to squat for pooping to be as easy/efficient as possible, and our toilets don't allow this. The tips above DO help.

And combining wipes with toilet paper will also help a bit. I use toilet paper as the primary mess control, and then non-scented baby wipes for gentle/thorough cleaning. DO NOT FLUSH the wipes. Using them LAST when the major mess is taken care of by toilet paper allows you to throw out the wipes with little to no odor.

The other ladies have good advice for you. Prep-H isn't very strong - the ob/gyn can give you some prescription cream that is much better. He or she won't give it to you if you can't have it while pregnant.

Try not to have a bowel movement everytime you go to the bathroom. Don't wait if you NEED to go, but just sitting on the potty to pee, and think you might try to have a BM? Don't do that. Wait until you need to REALLY have a BM and THEN go to the toilet for that express purpose. That will save some wear and tear on your poor bottom.

I agree with whoever said that there's a possibility of pinworms. When you call the doctor's office, tell the nurse that you need to be seen so the doc can determine whether what ails you is hemorrhoids or pinworms. And the only way you know for sure if there are hemorrohoids is with a rectal exam because the hemorrohoids could be just inside your rectum. Interestingly enough, sometimes having an exam can HELP because the doctor pushes the hemorrhoids in digitally and that can make a big difference. (Don't try it yourself - they are trained.)

I'm so sorry you're going through this. Itch and burn down there is terrible.

Sounds like hemorrhoids - they are common in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist about alternatives to Prep H, and you can certainly use them if there is no bleeding (most topical treatments for various skin issues are okay during pregnancy). Witch hazel can help. It's also possible to get a little yeast in that area, which causes itching. If you use a cream or an ointment, put a little panty liner in your underwear to prevent anything from staining or just being absorbed away from your skin. Try not to sit too much - you might consider a donut style cushion.

Increase your fluids and fiber to be sure you aren't straining when you have a bowel movement, and don't sit on the toilet for too long.

I'd also call the OB/GYN nurse - no need to wait for an appointment. They deal with this sort of thing all the time. Ask about whether you can use a suppository to help with internal hemorrhoids.

Try Desitin or any baby rash cream. I swear they work so much better than preparation H. I had them after my 3rd pretty bad and still get them occasionallly! The warm baths, drying the area completely(even with a hair dryer) and desitin worked really well. Oh, also try adding epsom salts or any natural, organic bath salts to the tub. I felt this helped too. Take care and get well soon!

Pick up some witch hazel. It is a mild astringent that will not only alleviate the itching but also shrinks tissues to help heal your hemorrhoids. You can use cotton pads with it (don't flush them) or fold a square of toilet paper.

It is inexpensive and you can find it at any pharmacy, Walmart, etc. It is in a bottle like rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide.

You didn't mention if you can feel the bumps of hemorrhoids or not, but even if it turns out to not be, using the witch hazel to help with the itching with not hurt.

your doctor can give you something more effective than prep H. i'm trying to stave off surgery (oi, my poor hiney) but boy, hemorrhoids ain't no fun.
clean yourself as gently as possible, preferably with a soft cloth and water, and reapply ointment after each bowel movement. sitz baths are great when you can do it. witch hazel sometimes helps. coconut oil is occasionally helpful too.
i'm skeptical about homeopathics, but i have to say that the homeopathic 'medicine' aesculus hippocampus has a genuine positive effect on my situation. it requires dissolving the tiny beads under my tongue several times a day, and i'm sure many will claim that it's a placebo. in my case it's short-term and not 100% even then, but a lot of the time it does help.
and yeah, call your doctor's office. if he can't see you for 3 weeks when you're in this much discomfort, that's a problem. maybe at least he'll call you in a px for some good ointment.

Hmm, you are only 8 weeks and your hemorrhoids are that bad? Have you looked at them, can you see them? I have some hemmy's, and they don't itch at all.

If your anus is that itchy, you might want to consider that you have pinworms. I've had them, and my kids have had them. In that case you take Pin-Rid or whatever the current common over the counter treatment is.

I think you are right. I had them through most of both pregnancies. Use baby wipes to finish up after a bowel movement. I also used Tucks pads.

No doctors in your town have open appointments for 3 weeks? What about the next town over, surely ANY doc can look and see what's going on if it's not baby related.
