Hemorrhoids - Help Please!

For the past few weeks, I have been dealing with hemorrhoids; at first one external that hurted like hell during and after bowel movements but the doctor prescribed hydrocortisone cream and the pain is gone. Although I upped my fiber and water intake, few days ago after a more consistent bowel movement that involved straining, I started finding streaks of blood on the toilet paper which makes me believe i may have internal ones too! I did not have this issue in the past (i may have had ocassional pain or bleeding after a hard stool passing over the years but never been diagnosed with hemmies) so I may overreact but I just want to find a way not necessarily to cure them but better manage the discomfort and relieve/address the symptoms! Your advice is highly appreciated.

So What Happened?

I talked to my doctor and was told to continue with the hydrocortisone cream and my high fiber diet and in case the bleeding becomes profusely she will prescribe me suppositories. The doctor believes the condition is still mild so diet, exercise and hydrocortisone cream should take care of it.
Few weeks ago I was on a 20+ hrs flight overseas, had a high carb &meat diet (not my choice), and that is when I got them and have been struggling ever since. Thanks everybody!

I suggest getting some pitted prunes and eating 3 a day in the morning. They're tasty and keep things moving.

"Hemmies." *Snort* No. Those little ba$tards don't get a cute nickname.

ETA: Hey, I just remembered a thing. So, sometimes when I start to get "bothered" down there, I take some probiotics. It usually feels better overnight, and is gone within a day or so. I've searched and found that many women end up with issues when they have too much yeast going on in the nether regions. For me, this is the best way to clear that up.

I like this one specifically because it doesn't upset my stomach and I don't have to take it with food. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000VM5A20/ref=pd_luc_rh...

i've been dealing with 'em for decades now. they showed up when i gave birth to my younger. it's a good thing i love that boy.
prep H no longer does the trick. my doctor has given me a stronger ointment poetically called proctosol which has given me considerable relief, but she won't give me auto-refills, to my vast irritation (in every sense of the word.)
but i'm trying desperately to avoid surgery. that just sounds miserable.
i encounter a little bleeding regularly. doesn't even faze me any more. i use non-alcohol wet wipes and pat, not rub. i also find the homeopathic medicine aesculus hippocampus helps out. i don't actually buy into homeopathy, but i also don't discount anything that works<G>.
good luck, hon!

I have a question - how old are you? If you are near your 40's or older, you should consider having an colonoscopy done.

If your doctor says you are too young for this, then he or she should be scoping you to see a few inches up what the inside of your rectum looks like. That way, you actually know what's going on up there.

Another thing to tell you is that sometimes after the doctor goes up in there with a digital exam or a scope, it actually helps you feel better. Not that I really understand that, but it's true. Maybe it pushes the hemorrhoid aside or something. I'm not the only one who has found that to be true.

Glad you've upped your fiber and water. Try a s softener too, like a miralax. Try getting a "potty scotty" it is a stool which help position you into a squat when using the toilet.

Also consider, diet, sleep, stress and exercise all of these can lead to bad digestion.

Speak with your doctor, a colonoscopy might be indicated.

Best,

Suppositories helped me when I had the issue.

Here's some prevention help:

If you like broccoli at all, try to have some several times a week. And the Kasha brand shredded wheat is AWESOMELY tasty.

Miralax should help in the short term.

A trick I read for helping prevent when pregnant, was to cross one leg over the other - like you're sitting with your one ankle across your knee. I'm not sure how, but it changes the angle of the colon and makes things easier. I've also seen that putting a little step stool that lifts your knees up above toilet level can also help things move out easier.

A little TMI, but this helps prevent irritation. Unscented baby wipes - not flushable - as part of the wiping routine. Toilet paper for general clean (gets you 99% clean), then follow up with baby wipes for up-close gentle clean, and you can throw them out because they are barely messy - the TP takes care of the main mess.

If you've had bleeding before, then you've had hemorrhoids before (either that, or a more serious intestinal condition). So while they weren't diagnosed, it's highly likely that you've had them. So you want to avoid straining at all costs. You're right about fiber and water, but also look at soluble and insoluble fiber together. That's hard to find in stores. I buy on line from an American manufacturer. Also avoid foods that counteract the fiber - eliminate cheese and bananas, and reduce meat consumption to small amounts more often rather than a lot at one sitting.

You can cure them - they are just varicose veins in the rectal/anal area. So avoiding irritation is key to getting the inflammation to subside.

Try not to sit on the toilet for too long. If you aren't being productive, get up and walk around. The endless sitting is a big cause of hemorrhoids. I agree about using a small stool to elevate your legs. A warm bath can help relax the muscles and move things along. I agree not to use TP - very irritating - you want as much of a "clean swipe" as you can get, with few wipes and little rubbing as possible. If it's convenient and you have a hand-held shower nozzle, step into the shower and rinse off the area with a soft spray. I know you can't do that every time, but it helps. A stool softener can help - consult your pharmacist for a recommendation that can be used when bleeding subsides.

Try to avoid sitting at a desk for too long as well. You can use one of those donut pillows, either regular or inflatable. If you are watching TV, lie on the couch or lean to one side rather than constantly putting pressure on the same area.

This is going to sound crazy but, ice them. Put several ice cubes in a ziploc bag, and seal it with as little air inside as possible. Tuck ti between your cheeks and sit on it for about 20 minutes. It will shrink the swelling and numb the pain.

Witch hazel, Budreaux' butt paste, and warm baths with some apple cider vinegar are all good treatments for Hemmroids. It is normal with Hemmroids to see some blood on toilet paper. However, it can take a while for these to reduce. Especially if aggravated by straining.

I have always suffered with constipation. I take probiotics as well as Metamucil (2tsp) every day.

If in a weeks time you are still noticing pain/ bleeding/ mucus, I would have your Physician do an rectal examination.

You may want to start using Miralax everyday for a while. This will soften your stools preventing the straining needed when having a bowel movement. I had that issue in the past and am a frequent Miralax user. I'm a user of suppositories too. Whatever you do keep the straining to a minimum. Good luck!!
