IS there a chance you could have been pregnant and may be having a miscarriage? I had a miscarriage and it lasted almost that long...
Hi, I wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and what to do about it. My period has been going on for 20 days and counting.
Some background: I never have a period when I'm breastfeeding so with my third child I had no period till he turned almost 15 months. Then my periods started and they are never heavy. This one is my third cycle and the previous ones lasted 7 to 10 days but this one is not ending and is heavy according to my normal. I also don't get cramping and a lot of pain and didn't in the begining of this one but now around the 19th day my back is hurting a lot.
Is my cycle changing? Previous ones were 24 days (meaning next period started 24 days after the 1st day of the previous one)... I talked to the nurse at my OB/GYN and she said that maybe my body was getting used to having a period since mine was such a long break and that I should give it 3 more weeks and in the mean time watch out for big clots.
Please advise. I don't know what is going on.
Thanks in advance.
Thankyou everyone for your experiences and advise. I will see how things are going for a few more days and then will go to the DR if this keeps going on. I am feeling better than b4.

It is not good to have a period last so long. You can lose too much iron in your blood and it can be very bad. As in life threatening. There is something you can take to stop it because my girlfriend went through a prolong period and needed it. I am not sure what it is called, but her iron got so bad she was hospitalized for 3 days and needed 4 blood transfusions!!!
I am not a doctor but I do work in the medical field and I have no idea about you medical history. It sounds sort of like Fibrosis. You should seek the adivice of a doctor as soon as possible. Especially if you are having lower back pain it could be something else. But, you are best to get checked out by a doctor asap.

I have PCOS and sometimes I have very long periods. One time I had one that lasted 13 weeks. I would suggest to just call your doctor and get some advice.
Gosh, I've never had a "normal" period anytime in my 35 years!!! However, when mine lasted longer than what I deemed normal, I called my Dr. Yes, it could be catch up, but it could also be something else. Clots are normal as well, but big ones (depending on what you consider big) aren't really normal.
Go see your Dr! Not to scare but it's worth seeing him and asking questions. How much longer can this last? Why is it happening, etc. Better to 'waste' a visit only to have it stop the next day (like taking your car to the shop for a noise!) than have it become something nasty. Make sure when you call, they know you ARE and have been bleeding for xx days.
Good luck and enjoy your babies!
K.-mom of 2, bizarre period history so very glad to have a hysterectomy last year!
hi there,
probably nothing wrong, and you should go see your doctor. Or at least talk to her and not the nurse this time.

I had a similar experience, but not so quickly after the kids, but a few years. I was always considered to be light, consistent and practically no cramping. Then I had one that was going for about three months, heavy (for me anyway), daily cramping and the worst mood swings. For me, it turned out to be early onset of perimenopause.
I tried the patch for a while which worked, but then didn't. I'm now finally on the birth control pill I was on before kids and the only symptom I experience is some hot flashes at night. I wasn't crazy about having to go back on the pill, but it has been a lifesaver for me.
According to my doctor, there is not a test for this other than trying things like the patch or pill and seeing if things get better. I was told it could take up to four weeks to notice a difference, but for me, it was about four days- thanks goodness!
Good luck in finding the answer. I wish you relief soon.

I would read the book What your dr. may not tell you about pre-menopause by Dr. Lee, he helped me so much! We often begin to experience symptoms of pre-menopause very early and hormones are very intricate in our bodies. I've had similar symptoms and was able to avoid a hysterectomy by following his advice and using HIS Progesta care cream regularly as he prescribes. He is such a wise man, now passed away but his family keeps his teaching and writings going for the many thousands who have benefitted. He had a heart for women to be heard and respect their bodies' intricate systems. He found that most dr.s didn't listen or care and their prescriptions often were self-defeating. It's progesterone you need, not estrogen. I promised my mother on her death bed from ovarian cancer that I would NEVER take estrogen. She felt it had killed her. Rest, use the cream and be patient, esp. if flow is heavy put your feet up and rest. Your body is trying to get back into sync.
take care of yourself! educate yourselves, ladies! My obgyn is fab but his nurse poked her head in one day and asked "do you want the dr. to write you a scrip for hormones?" WHAT! He hadn't talked to me about it, what if I was ignorant and said yes? GEEZ You have to take care of your own health.
If you didnt have a period for 15 months, then your body is catching up with that. When I had my baby, I didnt have a period for the 9 months, then immediately following delivery, I bled for 3 months straight.
First of all please put it on a calendar so you can keep track of this And secondly I recomend you go and talk with your doctor about this. Good luck
