HELP...my 8 Week Old Baby Will Not Sleep

My son is 8 weeks, we've been struggling with this for quite a while now and I am just purely exhausted. I work during the day part time and a few nights a week/weekends so I NEED my sleep.

Our little guy just won't sleep. He doesnt fall asleep until midnight and than he's up again in 2-2.5 hours, sleeps for two hours and up again. It's a struggel to even get him to sleep when we finally do. He just cries and cries and know he's fighting it. He is exclusively breasftfed. He also spits up a lot and is uncomfortable most of the day with either gas or reflux. The Dr. gave us Prevacid and i've been giving him that, but it doesnt seem to make a difference. I have eliminated dairy from my diet, not much of a difference. I don't know if he's uncomfortable or in pain and thats what is causing this. I need all the help i can get here. The only way to settle him down is put him in the swing, where he just about lives.

If there is something I could give him, or do for him to help settle him, please suggest it. I can't keep going on like this, otherwise I'll make myself sick and won't be able to take care of the kids.

Edited to add:
He doesn't sleep well during the day either, maybe a 1-2 hour nap, once, maybe twice. I realize he's little and won't really be on a schedule, but he's so tired and fights it, im looking for anything that'll help him rest.

What can I do next?

M. F,

You have to be entirely and utterly exhausted and at your wit's end! I have been there before...long ago! Reading your post takes me back (and I can smile about it now!)

I'm just wondering if your son has had a complete physical check-up? I'm trusting that he has, but just checking. My first-born was entirely like this, but it had nothing to do with reflux. Lots of ear infections were the culprit. I wonder about that when I hear that he will sleep in the swing. That upright position always helps the ears. If they have checked the ears, make sure that they are not seeing fluid. Once, my DS had so much fluid build-up, they could not see how red and irritated his little ears were behind it!

Have you tried a baby sling? I swear by those!

Good luck...let us know how it goes. Also, take care of you...get a break when you can...or some help if you need!

Best,
W....mom o 3

although i have not done it with my son, my chiropracter says that adjusting an infant can help with certain things. i know people feel strongly sometimes either way about chiropracters, but, just a thought. i went all during my pregnancy and it helped me a lot.

Have you tried eliminating anything with caffeine in it? I know that can really mess with a baby's sleep pattern if you are breastfeeding and consuming any amount of caffeine.

I would change to either a baby prilosec (this comes in a liquid flavored form) or I would ask to try some liquid zyntac. My son is 9 weeks old and is on Prilosec and it is amazing what a difference it makes with him. My daughter and my other son were both on Liquid Zyntac and did very well on that.
I would also take him to the Chriopractor and have him adjusted. I have taken all of my kids in after I gave birth to them and had them adjusted when they got really fussy and nothing else seemed to work. Call around there are Chiropractors that specialize in just babies. You would be impressed by the difference it makes. Think of how our bodies would feel if we were cramped in a small space for 9 months and then all of a sudden we came out of a small space and were all streched out, your body would hurt. Check it out!! I feel your pain though I have been there!! I am confused I just reread your listing and you start out by talking about a 8 week old but than at the bottom you say you have a 2 yr old and are expecting again??? so do you have three kids. Either way I would still do the things that I have stated

Oh i remember those days... my daughter was the same way! Here is our miracle cure - the vacuum!!! as soon as turned it on she would stop crying and settled right down. We actually burned out the motor and had to get it replaced, we used it so often. Then we got smart and bought a CD with sleeping sounds on it (I think it was called 'Grandma's Fussbusters") and we would put it on repeat on the vacuum track. We also used the swing a lot. And we had a huge yoga ball that we would sit on, holding her, and gently bounce up and down. She didn't sleep in her crib very much at all the first few months, the reflux would get worse when she did. she slept in a bouncer by our bed. don't worry too much about creating bad habits, they can be fixed later, over time. you both need your sleep. good luck! I can't even imagine how much harder it is to have an unhappy baby with a TWO year old! Hang in there, it WILL get better!
