I am wanting to add some Kayro syrup to by baby's bottle to help him poo, but I'm not sure how much to add. He drinks a 4 oz bottle every 3-4 hours. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it greatly.

Thank you soooo much!

What can I do next?

I don't know about the Karo syrup, and I am guessing pretty young baby by the amount of the bottle. One of my favorite ways to help constipated babies is by bicycling their legs and playing a game while doing it. (Like "Wheels on the bus go round and round"). Another thing is to massage their bellies and follow the "direction" of the large intestine.

***RE: botulism and Karo**** Straight from the mayo clinic website-It can contain botulism and is NOT recommended:

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/karo-syrup-for-constipat...

Interesting that the article also says that the Karo of today is not the Karo of yesterday and is not an effective "treatment" for constipation.

Don't do a thing! Talk to your baby's pediatrician! Do not give him Karo, mineral oil, or stick anything in his little bum (a perforated rectum will completely ruin both of your weekends. And that is putting it mildly).

Is your baby breastfed? If so they can easily go a week without a bowel movement. My 1st only went every 4 days sometimes 5. It is perfectly normal. Some breastfed babies go all the time. Some don't go very often.

I just want to add that there is not a danger of botulism with Karo syrup. Botulism can be in honey in amounts dangerous for babies but not adults.

Later, after reading Dori W.'s citation for the Mayo Clinic, I rescind my suggestion that Karo doesn't contain botulism. I wouldn't take a chance by giving it to a baby without first being reassured that botulism was unlikely and that doing so was the best way to go by the pediatrician.

The Mayo site gave suggestions for other ways to treat constipation. It's a great site.

Bug B.'s citation also explains very well about botulism and Karo syrup.

DO NOT do anything.... unless you KNOW FOR A FACT that your baby is constipated.
MANY babies... do not poop... for days. And it is normal.

HOW old is your baby????????

You best.... talk to your Pediatrician.

all the best,
Susan

My ped recommended mineral oil - you can add it to the bottle if that's how he is fed. If he is actively straining, you could try gently wiping around the anus with a wipe - it seems to help open it up a little. You could also try a little petroleum jelly on the end of a well-padded q-tip. But definitely ask your ped first to make sure there's an issue.

Talk to your doctor before you do anything. Many breastfed babies don't poo for over a week at a time (it just all gets absorbed) and many children and adults are "once a week'ers". Not everyone's metabolisms are the same. I know it freaks out people who poo every day (I can't COUNT the number of kids I know whose parents shove enemas up them every day because the PARENT is a once a day pooper, but the kid naturally poos once every couple days to once a week). I myself only poo once or twice a week max, my husband, otoh, is in the bathroom at 10:20am and 9:45pm every single day.

New babies are also "learning" how to poo. The pushing and the learning process of contracting those smooth muscles in a fluid/efficient way is an important part of neural development.

If she has somewhat hard poos... just put a little vaseline on her rectum to keep it from tearing (little tiny cuts, not like episiotomy type tearing). It's like moisturizing chapped lips so they don't crack when you smile.

There are better ways!! You'd be basically giving your baby sugar. Not to mention, there is a risk of botulism, which is deadly in babies. Add a tiny bit of pure prune juice, for quick results. To be sure, ask your Dr. first. I only gave the prune juice, after my Dr. told me it was OK. For long term results, get your baby a probiotic. Go to a natural foods store and they have powdered probiotics, for babies. Just add it to the bottle.

My son had this problem when he was a newborn all the way til 7 months or so. I used Karo syrup once and it caused major diarrhea. I always use the thermometer trick. Take your babys temp rectally with vaseline and it will make him go. My doctor suggested it and it always worked.

I breastfed my daughter, and the ONLY thing her ped. reccomended was Kayro, but the dark kind, not the clear. I just gave it to her once a day, I mixed it with a bottle of water which is what he said to do.

Call your doctor, and if you are saying he poops everyday why would you want to make him poop more? I am guessing since you said his tummy is rock hard...if that's the case, take him in to see the doctor.

My oldest son had severe constipation. He wouldn't go for days and would scream his little heart out. My ped suggested 1 oz of Gerber apple juice. If that didn't work, the following day add 1/4 of a tsp of milk of magnesia to a bottle. Milk of magnesia works naturally with the body and guaranteed to work.

I would discuss some of these options with your doctor first, however. Good luck!

i started doing that with mine only after i started adding the baby spoons of cerial to their bottles, but i would only add just enough to cover the bottom of the bottle at first, as the cerial amount increased so did the amount of karo, this was also only done at night time with their cerial bottles also done just at night, its something the family has done for years so i was ok with it.

Start with about 1/2 a teaspoon. I gave my older son one Karo bottle a day for about six months because he just couldn't "go" without it!
