Hi - for the last 3-4 years my sister has been complaining that she is losing her hair. I personally don't see it but I'm sure since it's her head she notices it more. Anyway, she wants to buy something that will help but there are so many products out there and most of them are very expensive. She doesn't have a lot of money so I would hate for her to be just throwing it away on some product with a really good infomercial. I think she's tried rogaine with a little success, but stopped and now she says her hair is really starting to fall out - lots of it every time she washes her hair. Does anyone know of a product that actually does work and maybe a success story of you or someone you know thats used it? Thanks!
I hate to beat a dead horse here, but I agree with the other ladies...maybe not about the thyroid issue, but just that there is a likely chance that her hormones are out of whack.
My mom (who is young...16 years older than myself) was losing her hair to a noticable point. She went to a women's wellness center and had labs drawn which determined that her testostorone and estrogen levels were VERY low. Once she began supplementing her hormones her hair filled right back in.
Good luck!

Hi L.,
I actually would be trying to find out why she's losing her hair. Anything she uses will just be throwing her money away if she doesn't understand why it's happening.
Sorry, I know that's not the answer you were looking for but it's what came to mind.

Dear L.,
First of all the more she worries about her hair falling out, the more will fall out - because stress is one of the major contributory factors that makes us lose hair.
De-Stress!
As a Health and Wellness Advisor I would also recommend that she get on a very good nutritional program to give her body the nutrients she is lacking. Start from within. This video will help to understand what a good Nutritional program should do. It is password protected, here's the user name and password:
Third - Use hair care products that provide a nutritional benefit to the scalp and have been clinically tested on humans http://www.shaklee.net/ser/product/HairCare This particular line not only has been tested and proven to increase new hair growth but is Guaranteed to satisfy
the customer or your money back!
Fourth - If you think it would be beneficial - I can also send you a verbal testimony, via email, from someone who suffered from Alopecia (mysterious hair loss) - she tells how she got results.
I don't charge for these services because, I myself, was without finances and totally disabled in 1994. Today, I feel better than I did at the age of 23 and I work from my home and for myself. I feel priviledged to be able to provide the service.

First, it should be determined that she actually has hair loss occurring. The average person loses 50-100 hairs per day (which is a lot); however, most people don't realize this. Moreover, if she has been doing chemical treatments to her hair (e.g. home perms/colors) this could cause her hair's balance to be off. She should either talk to her hair stylist for product recommendations and concerns.
Another avenue she could pursue is to talk to an employee from Sally's Beauty Supply for possible products that could help as it is open to the public (license required to purchase colors/perms though).

Tell her to get her vitamin levels checked. Make sure she is eating enough protein for hair regrowth. See a dermatologist to make sure her scalp doesn't have a skin issue causing the hair to fall out or if the follicles are dying. Is there male pattern baldness in the family? Losing hair elsewhere on her body? Has she had a baby in the last few months. Stress?

She should get checked for B-12 deficiency and thyroid. They both help or hurt each other as far as the body works. I have both so I use a great vitamin line that has brought my b-12 up to normal and now by thryoid is getting better and I am still loosing hair but not as much.
Eating right, Taking control of your home environment and have toxic products helps also. Because what you put on your skin is taken in thru to the muscles and blood stream. It causes autoimmune and other diseases. Good Luck.
First of all is your sister on blood pressure medicine, or thyroid medicine? That can make you hair fall out. It did mine. The only thing I have found to help is Biotin. it is a vitamin supplement. Mostly the only thing that helps is get healthy enough to get off of blood pressure and thyroid medicines.

I agree with the comments below - have blood work done to see if it is due to a medical issue. Mine is due to fibromyalsia (sp?). I use the Nioxin products that have already been mentioned. They have various levels from 1 - 4 depending upon the amount of thinning. I have used it for over 2 years and have seen the thinning slow down. It is expensive but used faithfully, it keeps the hair follicles clean and healthy. I purchase mine at Beauty Brands and sometimes they have sales of up to 50% off on the cleanser and scalp therapy. Good luck in finding out the reason and what works.

Get thyroid checked. If she has low energy or feels tired, definitely get it checked.

Hi. I am a hair stylist...and the best thing you can get besides going to a doctor is Nioxin. They have different treatments for what kind of hair you have. It should tell you on the box what each number stands for. But I would get the Shampoo, Conditioner and leave-in-treatment. Best advice is don't buy it at any store...most of the salon stuff sold at regular stores are past expiration or watered down-making them not work as well. I would find a salon that sells it and go that route! She really does want to do something now though b/c if she waits the hair bulb could actually die and hair won't ever be able to re-grow in that spot. So if she catches it before it dies she can replenish it and help the hair grow back! Hope it helps!

Hi L.,
You might want to have your sister see her doctor and have her thyroid checked. My sister had the same thing going on, and her hairdresser was the one who told her it could be the problem. Sure enough, her thyroid was underactive. When she started taking medicine, it corrected itself.

I agree that if your sister feels she is losing more hair than what is normal, she should find out the cause of the problem. Vitamin deficiency and thyroid levels come to mind.

I totally sympathize with her ! I have the same problem !
After she has ruled out any health causes ..... tell her to go to Sally's Beauty Supply and get a brand of shampoo and conditioners called "Hemp". I have seen a dramatic reduction in my hair loss since using this product, and my hair seems healthier. I can't say that I have grown back any that I have already loss, but the unnatural loss has stopped.
I seriously believe the chemicals in most shampoos and hair products are to blame.
There is also a skin care line called "Hemp" and I am finding that I love these products as well. My skin has never looked so healthy and soft.

Good Morning L., normally people lose a lot of hair daily. Any where from 80 to 200 hairs a day. Depending on your hair color. Since my natural color is very dark and I became a Fake bake Blondie yrs ago, i should be bald by now if I worried about the amount of hair I loose daily, from brushing and shampooing. Dark haired people loose the least daily, then redheads, and blonde's usually lose the most.
*remembering from my Cosmetology School YEARS ago* Grad. in 71.. mercy me long time ago.
Stress, Illness, Hormonal changes, poor diet can cause our hair to seem thinner and we can actually lose hair because of it. *Gee wish it worked on my legs* :))
We have new eyelashes coming in every 7 days also...lol
I have no advise on what products to use but I would suggest she see a dermatologist if she is really concerned about it.
God Bless and Have a wonderful Wednesday

I know she should make sure she's taking her vitamins. Maybe talk to her doctor to see if she needs to take something extra?
Something else - over the years, I have realized that certain shampoo and/or conditioners make more hair fall out when washing. So, if I have one that tons of hair falls out, I quit using it. This has happened to me over the years with store products and salon products. So, have her switch to something else (even something already in the house) and see if as much falls out. Buy sample sizes or borrow small amounts from family until she finds one that doesn't do that. My sister had great luck with the "Big Sexy Hair" line of stuff in salons. They have an Organic shampoo line and she has been amazed with her results with it.
Good luck!

Hi L.,
I would like to say as a cosmetologist that any product your sister uses will only help as long as she is using it, as soon as she stops her hair will start falling out again. I also agree she needs to find out why she is loosing her hair to begin with. I personally had lap-band surgery and am now loosing my hair due to a lack of protein in my diet. Hair loss can be caused by all sorts of things from stress to medication to diet, or certain medical conditions. She really needs to see a doctor on this one. Also Nioxin does work, but again all the hair that was regrown while using it will fall out when someone stops using it. Good luck to your sister.

In regards to products. There are a few systems out there. I personally like the Nioxin system. It is a three step process; Shampoo, Conditioner & Scalp Treatment. What I noticed in using it, is it slows the hair loss. I used it everyday through the first system and then have gone to only using it with every other washing and it works like a charm. You can get this at a beauty supply store or some salons, but I personally purchase it off of E-Bay.
