Hi Moms,
My 11mo has his front four teeth. Recently, he has started to grind them together. It sends chills up and down my skin. Besides that, I know this is not a good habit for him to get into for the health of his teeth. Usually I try to grab a pacifier to distract him. Do you have any other suggestions on how I should try to stop this or distract him from it.
Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

Wow, my 14 month old just started this this week. More teeth are coming in, top and bottom, by the day. I'm glad you asked, and for the responses. When she does it, I put my finger on her lips and say, "No". Now, I will leave her alone, and try not to get too annoyed with the sound of it. It sounds like she's doing major damage, but I'm glad she's not.

My daughter grinds her teeth when she is teething most of the time. (She does it occassionally other times as well but it is pretty common when she is teething.) She is 27 months old and just went to the pediatric dentist who told me it is normal to grind while they are teething.
That said, don't let your child see you react to the noise because he may start doing it as a way to get you to react/interact with him. Neutral distraction I think is the best way to go. Giving him something else to entertain him like a teething toy or something is great. Good luck!

Hey there
My son went through this as well. I asked his dr. about it at his 1 year check up and she said it is normal. Sure enough, a week or two later and he stopped doing it alltogether. It is such a horrible sound, isn't it??? Good luck!

BTW _ we did the same thing by giving him his pacifier when we heard him start grinding.

I agree with the other posts. My son did the same thing and eventually he/it just seemed to stop one day....

Nope my daughter did the same thing and still does. The doctor and dentist both said ignore it. So i did they said that you can't stop them and do anything about it until they are much older.

Hi!! I'm a mom of an autistic child and she grids her teeth all the time. We have found that giving her a wet washcloth helps. She'll chew on it until the urge to grind her teeth is over.

I wouldn't worry about it. This is a normal phase, a lot of babies do this with their first teeth. It's just interest in the new sound they can make. Having teeth to clack/grind together is a new thing for baby and he will tire of it eventually. My youngest was so bad about this we called him "little geiger" because he sounded like a geiger counter when he ground his teeth. He was soooo loud and while I knew it was just a phase, I worried that he was damaging his teeth. He's now 16 months old and hasn't ground his teeth for several months. His teeth appear to have suffered no damage either. Frankly, I would be more worried about the pacifier habit. That one actually IS a habit and it's a difficult one to break.
