Help with My 24 Month Old Biting!

My daughter learned this biting behavior in daycare. Now that it is summer and I am out for summer vacation(I am a teacher) I am trying to "un-do" this awful behavior! She bites when she gets mad/frustrated. Can anyone give me any advice on how to help her unlearn this behavior? I have tried "fake crying" when she bites me and saying, "That hurt mommy" at the same time, and this does not seem to work. The biting has continued. She started biting in daycare about 2 months ago. HELP!

What can I do next?

We went through the same thing with our son. We even tried lightly popping him on the mouth and he didn't care. We did a combination of using a preservative called Alum and we finally got so tired off it that we bit him back. I know it seems harsh but from my experience (I have 13 nieces and nephews and everyone has gone through it) this has been the only solution to it. Try the alum you can get it at the grocery store it tasty really nasty but is totally safe it is in the spice aisle.

Hi A.! Biting is a somewhat “normal” behavior. That being said, it is absolutely unacceptable. Most daycares will unexpectedly “kick” children out for biting (because a bite can seriously injure another child). I would not “act like you’re crying” because this is the exact reaction Faith is looking for. Simply say “NO” (stern voice) and put her down away from you and then say “Mommy doesn’t want to play with someone that hurts her”. The lesson here is two-fold… don’t play with people that hurt you AND don’t hurt other people. Give it a try :) Oh, and congrats on the adoption of little Faith! (I am a strong believer in adoption!!!!)

I had the same problem with my daughter. I tried acting like she really hurt me, time out time, you name it I tried it. One day I got really fed up because she got mad cause I would not give her a snack and bit me on the thigh while I was doing laundry, and as awful as it sounds I bit her back. She has not bitten again since that day.

my son is 25 months and he picked it up since daycare. the first year he was in private care and there was only one kid so not a big problem, but when he started daycare around lots of kids.....
most of the time it is over toys. luckily they havent kicked him out and it has slowed down. only occaisonally now. it is hard since he doesnt do it around us to correct him. the daycare tells me it is a stage and they grow out of it and they put him in time out when he does it. i ask everyday, "WAS HE GOOD?" hoping that they will say "YES" now the "yeses" seem a lot more frequent.

It is a very normal thing at this age and most kids will do it wether they have been in day care or not, so dont feel too bad:) I believe in a quick and firm reaction for biting, and if you chose to bite her back (my moms theory!) or pop/flick her mouth, or do what I did and put a little baking soda on their tongues, do it every time until she gets it. I believe for some things time out is just not enough and biting is one of them. I like a logical consequence that involves her mouth since that is the culprit, and it needs to be jarring enough to her that she is more afraid of it than her need to bite! I was also this way about things regarding safety, such as running across the street, touching elecric sockets, or hot items, or trying to go out the door with out mommy. You are entering a very fun, yet assertive and independant time, so best of luck to you, and enjoy your summer break!! ~A.~
