I hope someone can help me...or point me in the right direction. Every time my son who is 7, cuts or scratches or even gets some kind of bite, it always turns into an infection. The first one was a paper cut, which got so bad he almost lost his finger, then a flea bite, a few more scratches, then on the playground at school right before school got out, he was bit by something that gave hime blood poisioning and an infection that could have killed him. Now, he has a scratch on his finger that is turning into an infection. I have a well-child visit on Friday with his doc. His doctor is well aware of this situation. Is there anything I can ask that might prompt some tests or something? I'm afraid that with all these antibiotics that he is going to get an immunity to them. Any feedback would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

Have they swabbed the cuts to see what the infection is being caused by? My husband had a similar issue where he first had an infection with a cut he received while playing rugby (so really it would have been any number of vile and nasty things that caused it). They gave him some antibiotics and the infection seemed to go away. Well, then a few weeks later he gets another cut... big oozing infection. It turned out that he had a staph infection, and the antibiotics had really not affected it at all. His own body had kind of fought it off, but had not completely killed it. So the next cut he got, the infection reared its ugly head. He ended up on some really strong antibiotics once they finally figured out the cause.

My suggestion, if they haven't already done so, is to have them swab the infected area and send it to the lab to figure out what you're dealing with, and then make sure they give him the appropriate medication to deal with it. If the labs come back inconclusive, maybe ask for blood tests. It doesn't seem normal that he should have so many infections, so I wonder if it's just one infection or issue that has never quite gone away.

Good luck! Let us know what happens! Poor little guy.

Hi D.,
I agree with Catherine C. that you should get it swabbed. With the new antibiotic resistant staph it is scary! I would ask to be refer to a specialist, though I'm not sure who. Keep us posted!
Sincerely,
L.

Hi D.,

Is he on any vitamins or probiotics? Those are supposed to really help boost the immune system. I am not sure what to ask the doctor specifically, but I would ask if there are any auto immune disorders that they could test for-- This seems extremely abnormal to me and if you aren't satisfied with the doctor's answers, get a second opinion and see a specialist. I hope that this helps.

Take care,

Molly

Have the infection checked for multidrug resistance and your son for auto-immune disorders (sadly it sounds more like the later to me.) Also someone suggested that it could be a circulatory problem which is also a strong candidate.

Has he had any blood work since this all started? A lot of things could be rulled out with a simple blood test.

Wash the cut well right after he gets it and liberally apply Neosporin with a bandaid over it. That should prevent it from becoming infected.

However, that does sound like a lot of infections. Catherine C.'s advice is good.

A google search (Alternative Medicine: Treating infected wounds) turned these up:

and:

why is my child prone to infections when he is cut or scratched?

There are many, check them out.

We killed a nasty abcessed tooth infection using Bentonite. There is a liquid form, and a powder form. The powder is great you can add a little water and create a clay to put on the infected area. Bentonite absorbs/draws out the toxins.

Good luck!

D.,
I get my fingers infected pretty regularly because of a
circulatory disorder, all it takes is a paper cut, then if
i wash my hands the bacteria from the water causes the
cut to get infected. pretty bad when you think about it.
Does your son have a circulatory disoorder? You can do
some research of your own at webmd.com. My problem is
called reynauds phenomenon. Good luck, and don't give
up when the doc tells you know keep insisting, you are your childs advocate.
