Help with Daughters Pierced Ears

My daughter is 8 and she got her ears pieced in November. I have left the earrings in that she got them pierced with since one of her ears keeps getting an infection. We clean them, keep her hair pulled back. I'm wondering if there is something else I could use to clean her ears with. I am using the bottle of solution she got at the ear piercing place. Years ago when I got mine pierced, we used good ol' hydrogen peroxide and water. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi C.,
My daughter had the same problem(at about that same age too)...we were given the ear cleaner from the place that pierced her ears & twice they got infected or closed up around the earring. The 2nd piercing she got we ONLY used Hydrogen peroxide.....they were fine after that....
Good Luck....

I use Rubbing Alcohol to clean mine. I am really sensitive to most metals, so she may be as well. May want to try a different type of post since she may be allergic to what she is wearing now.

Try Sea salt. They give it to you at piercing shops when you have other piercings done. Soaking it in seasalt and water will most definately get rid of the infection. I also have a girl friend who's ears cleared right up after swimming in the ocean on vacation. You can get a little bag of the salt and mix it in water. It's natural and not harmful.

Also try dipping the earring in neosporin before putting it in her ear. My mom always did that with us. We never had infected ears.

My daughter had a nickel allergy that we didn't know about. And unfortunately they don't always tell you about nickel content in jewelry. However, walmart does sell nickel-free jewelry including pierced earrings. Try that approach my daughter's tolerance to other types of earrings has gotten longer. But she still has trouble and when that happens she puts her nickel free ones in and they clear right up. Also when I was a kid we used a product called Camphophenque I can't remember how its spelled but it was in a green bottle and yellow label. It might still be, it's an oil texture but it works great at healing all kinds of wounds that Alcohol and Peroxide doesn't. I hope you find something that works.

My daughter had her ears pierced a couple of years ago and we had a similar problem with just one ear. It turns out that the person that did the piercing did not get the gun aligned properly and it was pointed down slightly. The little pocket where the earlobe is then exposed and it will hold puss and you can't get it cleaned well enough to keep the infection away. We ended up taking out the earring and let it heal, and then got it re-pierced several months later.

We used rubbing alcohol when we were kids. I had several piercings, never had an infection.

Hi. I would use whatever worked for you. Alcohol would work too but might be a bit harsh for her. If it didn't get better, I would probably have her ear checked out by a doctor.

I'm sure you've received lots of advice, but my ideas are as follows: 1) think about the earrings, not the solution, 2) try gold only or silver only, 3) try hoop style earrings only (I had a friend who could not wear any type of post earrings, because they did not allow the hole to breathe. Good Luck, some people just can't do pierced earrings.

it's been 5 months.. if she's still having a break down try taking them out, putting in gold ones and dip the posts in bag balm before putting them in her holes.

she might not be healing from the pierce because the metal is irritating her ears.

I had lots of problems with my pierce ears and it turns out it was the metal. Try upgrading her earrings. Use either surgical steel earrings or fourteen karat gold hoops. It's probably a nickel allergy.

Try Bactine. That is what I was told to use when I got my nose pierced. Good luck!

Good old fashioned peroxide or rubbing alcohol works just fine for my granddaughters. I would suggest hypoallergenic posts only for a while till the infection clears. Good luck!

C.,
She may have a sensitivity to the nickle in the earing.
My daughters are constantly that way if she wears cheaper earings. They make some stuff that cookie lee sells and I think I have seen it at wal mart as well, you coat any earing post, and back with it, and it stops the problem.
Either that or buy earings that say "Nickle Free" on them.

I have had several piercing (ears, lip, bellybutton) over the years and I have an extreme sensitivity to metal so I've taken most out. Even yellow gold and the surgical steel will bother my ears after a while. I finally got some of my piercings to heal correctly (my ears have been a problem since I was a little kid) by following the instructions of a piercing shop very specifically. I clean mine twice a day with an anti-bacterial soap like Dial. I soak them in sea salt water if they get at all irritated for about 15 minutes once or twice a day until them clear up.

I have to wear nickel free metal if I wear the same earrings for more than one day. If you can get her to heal up well enough to take them out at night let her sleep without them. Do not use Neosporin, hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol. All of these can slow healing and are not recommended for tattoos or piercings. If she's in pain you can contact a piercing shop to ask for gel lytocain to put on it. Some of them will carry it but you may have to go to one that’s also a tattoo shop not the place at the mall. If you’re anywhere near Roseville let me know and I can recommend a good shop to you.

Good luck!
