I posted this a bit ago and got no reponses, so I am posting again in hopes of getting some advice. A friend of a friend has just found out that their unborn child has Achondroplasia (dwarfism). Does anyone know of pediatric specialists? I have found a lot of things to forward to them through the Little People of America websites- but was wondering if anyone had any experience and/or advice? Thank you

What can I do next?

I am sure she has talked to her OB about a specialist, if not then now is the time so she can have them in attendance after baby is born. They have specialists, just have to look for them via internet or get info from local OB or pediatrician.

I don't know, personally. You could try calling children's hospital. They have a hotline that suggests pediatricians. They may be able to tell you of anyone who specializes or has experience with achondroplasia. I don't have the number, but I'm sure you could find it on the web. It was a physician/pediatrician referral line.

Praying for your friend. In my whole life - I personally know no-one in this situation. I would think the L.P.O.A. would be the best place to start.

There is/was a show on cable about a family where the parents were small and they had a set of twins where one was normal stature and the other one was small like them. (Even harder watching someone who you "should-be" keeping up too) Just like some disabilities in children. You have to let them do as much as they can for themselves. People tend to "protect" their children. Keep them from learning, doing and accomplishing things. Just because their small doesn't mean they can't have full, happy lives.

God Bless,
L.

Hi P., I'm sorry no one responded to your request the last time. I know that can be very discouraging. Can you tell me what location your friend lives in? I work for St. Johns hospital and I can look and see if i can find something out. Not sure if i can, but it's worth a try. I don't really know of any websites, but i have watched that show that is on cable "little people, big world". It's an awesome show! Really shows you what they go through everyday but it's very uplifting (most of the time). Let me see if i can find anything out and if i do, i'll let you know. Good luck to you and your friend. Big hugs!!
