Help with a Diaper Problem

I have a 2 1/2 year old son who needs overnight diapers when he goes to sleep at night. The problem is that he is in a size 6 diaper and the overnights only go up to size 5. He is wetting the bed at night because the diapers aren't big enough. I only give him a sippy cup of milk before he goes to bed at night and he does not get a lot to drink before bed. Has anyone else had this problem? I need some help. I am cleaning sheets every night. It is also waking him up early in the morning because he is soaked through his clothes. PLEASE HELP!!!

What can I do next?

Hi Michelle...There are diaper liners that you can buy for extra protection and absorbtion. I remember that Jewel/Osco used to make their own store brand. Good Luck!

I don't know if they come small enough, but Huggies also makes a product called GoodNites for older children who wet the bed. It sounds like the overnight Pull-Ups would work for now, but if they're not the right size or don't contain enough for him, you could try the Goodnites.

I know it's hard. Pray for patience; it always works for me. It is very common for a 2 1/2 year old boy to need some protection at night. I know what you mean about those crazy sizes, too! Try 'Goodnites underpants'. They are sold right with the diapers, and they really are diapers for that next stage. They have small-medium (38-65 pounds), and large- extra large (60-125 ponds).
These really work well! My son is 3 1/2, and is pretty well potty trained but I just don't trust when he's asleep so I have him wear one for bed. He weighs 34 pounds, but the small- medium fit nicely (and fit when he weighed less than now). His are always dry in the morning, but there was a time when they weren't- these 'Goodnites' saved our sheets.
If your son is potty training, have him empty his bladder before bed. It's not always possible, believe me I know from my own son, going on demand can be a challenge for them. If it becomes a regular nightly ritual that the very last thing he does before bed is to sit on the toilet it may start to become regular and comfortable enough that eventually he will be able to go at around that time every night. Well, best of luck!

Try those night shorts things. I think those are bigger. They look like real shorts.

Pull-ups go up to size 4T I think and they are pretty absorbant. I don't give my kids anything to drink an hour before bed and my 18 month old doesn't leak and my 2 1/2 year old doesn't get up to go pee. You should try cutting him off early.

we have a son the same age... same problem
switch to the huggies overnight pull ups. they work really well. they come in 2T/3T and also 3T/4T. we use the smaller size and they work much better than diapers. the regular huggies pull ups (cars design) work great too. our son was taking diapers off all the time... leaking all over the place constantly... the pull ups have been a life saver and they introduce potty training because they go on and off like underwear. they also have easy open sides like a diaper which is great for #2...

Have you tried the goodnight pullups? I know they go big enough and hold quiet a bit. My younger brother had a bed wetting issue untill age 5 and my mom used goodnight pullups and they seemed to help.

Have you thought about using the night time pull-ups? I went through this with my youngest daughter for about 3 weeks and that is when we tried goodnights. It did the trick for us! Just a thought!

Hi Michelle,
I would try the overnight pullups. I believe they are by Huggies. My son is potty trained and he still wets the bed every once in awhile but I cant get him to use a pullup anymore. Otherwise I would try to wake him up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

We have had this problem with our son FOREVER!! He's 31/2 and we've been changing his diaper in the middle of the night for about 2 years. Pampers makes an overnite that goes to size 7 but they're sometimes hard to find (we've had good luck at Target). Also, the Huggies overnites (toy story design) have worked pretty well for us. Good luck!

Have you tried Diaper Doublers? I found some at Dominick's. It is basically like a maxi pad without a liner. It did the trick for my guys.

We use cloth diapers- you wouldn't need very many for his age since you're probably potty training or trained during the day. They could really save you some money, not to mention landfill waste!

I recommend Fuzzi Bunz. They work just like a regular disposable diaper, but are cloth with snaps. The outside is waterproof and the inside is really soft. There is an opening along the back where you can stuff in a piece of material (or more than one for extra absorbancy) called a liner or a doubler.

You can stuff two in at night he should be comfy and dry. The inside of the diaper is made of fleece which makes him feel dry because it wicks the moisture away from the skin.

They are really easy to use and you can feel free to contact me if you are interested in knowing more or have questions. I don't sell these or anything- just use them! There are lots of online sites that sell cloth, and a store called BeByBaby that is right outside of Chicago that sells them as well. You can also buy them on eBay for a good deal sometimes. You would probably only need about 3 or so, and you can throw them in with the regular wash, but don't use fabric softener on them or they will repel water.

Hope this gives you another idea!

I would try cutting down how much he gets before he goes to bed. Let him have his drink until an hour or an hour and a half before he goes to bed. Then, at bed time, make it a routine to go to the bathroom, get in bed, read a book, whatever and then take a drink before he goes to sleep. The only accidents my son has is when I forget to take him to the restroom before he gets in bed, or if he plays too long before he goes to sleep. Hope this helps.

Although I haven't had this same problem with a child that age, with my 1 year old who was wetting through I put a maxi pad horizonally stuck at the top of the diaper. it absorbed the excess. Something to try.
