HELP! We Have Permanent Marker on Our Couch!!!

We have a few small blotches of black permanent marker on our white couch upholstery. I have tried Oxo-Brite, which usually removes all stains for us. Any tried and true suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I will try to purchase some Sol-u-mel to use on it. It sounds like it'll be handy to have around the house. Thanks again.

I have gotten permanent marker out of clothing by using ordinary rubbing alcohol. Many permanent markers are alcohol based, therefore rubbing alcohol works. I just put some on a q-tip and used it like an eraser. Came right off. You may have to try it multiple times.

Good luck!

Sol-u-Mel! It's my "can't live without it" multi-use product! It's great for getting permanent marker off anything, and the best part is, it's safe enough to use around children and pets - I spray my cats with it when they come in from outside and stink to high heaven - and give my daughter a bath in it when she's got diaper rash. Good luck :)

I agree with A. D. Sol-u-mel is the thing to use!!!! You can get it at www.melaluca.com It is the BEST product ever! I have seen someone take permanent marker to a picture, scribble all over it and the sol-u-mel took it right off without damaging the picture! We have used it for everything and it has never failed us. And we have seen it all as I am a daycare provider and mom of 3 boys. Good luck!

Hi K.!

I agree with a few of the previous posts - Sol-u-mel is the way to go!! You can't find it in stores, and in order to get it from the website, I think you have to get your account set up by contacting a current customer. Feel free to message me, and I'll give you all the details. =)

If you're a Melaleuca customer,

Try their Sol-U-Mel.

Fabulous stuff! I use it for almost everything!

This product alone has saved my family a lot of headaches, money and frustration!

Try hairspray. It's worked for me on other kinds of ink, can't remember for sure if I've used it on permanent ink though. It's cheap and worth a try though if the other suggestions don't work.

Try WD-40. It works great as a stain remover for everything.

When we have had permanent marker on our walls, we've used acetone from our garage to get it out.

There is a product called Motsenbocker's Lift Off stain removers-There are 5 different product. Step 3 is the one you want it stain remover for pen, inks, marker etc. This works great, all you do is spray or blot it on wait 30 seconds and use a white cloth or white papertowel and apply pressure and it will absorb the marker in the towel. I have used this products numerous times. Step 1 is great for childern's clothing. You can get this product at most hardware stores and possible Walmart. Good Luck!

Finger nail polish remover might work. I have used it before to get permanent marker off of a dry erase board.

Try spray and wash. I have gotten ink out of clothes in a printmaking class, which said this will not come out of anything. Hope that helps!

I don't know if it will work for upholstery, but every time I've gotten permanent marker on my white boards I write over it with a dry-erase marker. The chemical in dry-erase markers that makes them wipe off does the same to remove permanent marker on the boards. You might want to try it with a yellow/orange color marker to see if it works and then wipe it off with a damp cloth. Otherwise you could try the clorox pens. I LOVE them. I've used both on fabric/furniture and they've turned out just fine without residue/discoloration, though my couches are a wine color, so I don't know how they'd work on white upholstery.
