Hi My baby's nanny recently found what look like rodent droppings in our kitchen. I am totally freaking out about this. The house is reasonably clean was pest free an year and half ago when we bought it and had the inspection done at the time.

What can I do next?

I am with you. I am a neat freak, especially in my kitchen and could not believe that I had mice. I had an exterminator come and he put out packets that they open and eat. It causes them to be thirsty so they go outside and drink themselves to death. They should not die in the house- I did find one dead downstairs, but I think my dog scared it to death rather than the poison. The packets were not quite quick enough for me- I also put no see no touch kill traps every where I saw mice droppings. After you've been free of fresh droppings, seal any areas you can identify where they may have come in. I've been mice free for a few months now, but still keep traps and poison packs set in case they decide to come back.

I have the book 1001 All Natural Secrects to PEST CONTROL....Rodents are allergic to "oil of peppermint" (not peppermint extract) Put on cotton balls & put around your house. (works on spiders too) Lots of other ideas too, but this one keeps them away & you won't have to deal with dead rodents in traps & such! DON"T use glue traps!!! Horrible, they stick to it & stay there til they starve to death. Good luck & good riddance!!!

Ah--I know it well....the finding of mouse droppings in the kitchen! And then comes the FREAK OUT MODE! We live near woods and have had this happen a few times during weather changes. Totally freaks me out and we go into "mouse lock-down mode" ONLY use clean dishes that are stored in the dishwasher, re-wash all dishes and silverware--I can't STAND the thought of these little mouse-paws traipsing over my stuff! haha
I would use the covered mouse traps wherever you find droppings (make sure they are safe away from little hands) Then check openings where they could get in--around pipes under the sink, to an outside wall, etc and try to seal them off. Keep setting traps (we use peanut butter on them) until you haven't caught O. for a week or so, then you should be all clear.
I feel your pain! Hang in there.....

You aren't the only one. We have little gray mice. I think all the rain has pushed them inside. I am going to try that oil of peppermint the other poster mentioned. I use traps, but seems these mice are so light weight they eat the peanut butter and the trap never triggers. Good luck

I understand how you feel. Another good tip is to put a bar of soap in each drawer. For some reason, they stay away from soap. I take a bar and cut it into 4 chunks, then I put one in each drawer, in closets, and under beds, etc. I also put on by the trash areas. Everywhere I can think of. Another tip a friend told me about, but I haven't tryed it yet. She takes plaster of paris (sp?) and mixes it with cheese whiz. Then she put it somewhere for the mice to eat it. Not by pets or children. Aparently, the mice eat it and it interupts their digestion and kills them. Hope these suggestions help. Good luck!

Ugh! We had the same problem. I tried everything and nothing got rid of them completely. Finally we got a cat, and have not had any mice since.
