Help!!!! My Dishwasher Just Exploded!

Ok, so it didn't exactly explode, but there is soap everywhere! My 8 year old daughter wanted to mop up the soap so that's why I can still type this with soap all over the floor. I use those Cascade packets that have a little Dawn dish soap in them. Part of me wonders if maybe there was too much dish soap in the pack and that's what happened. My floor nearly looks like a scene from I Love Lucy or something. Have any of you ever had this happen from those packets? I can fully understand why you aren't supposed to use dish soap in the dishwasher, but they could be more careful about how much they put in those packs. I guess I'm really just venting cause my husband is deployed, and I have to deal with these things all myself. I just hope my 2 year old dishwasher isn't messed up and that it was just soap. Let me know if this has happened to anyone else with those packs. Maybe I need to switch to something else. I've been using these for years and never had this happen before, even when I use 2 packs if I think the dishes are extra dirty. I only used one this time, and now a mess!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You guys are all so nice! What I did was run the machine through rinse, and clean up the rest of the soap as it foamed out. Then I put a new packet in after rinsing off the Dawn part. Everything went well from there. I should also add that I'm probably lucky it's a portable dishwasher so I don't have to worry about the inside of my cabinets being wet all. I think I will contact the company and at least let them know what happened. Who knows, I could get a free pack out of the deal. :) Oh, and just so you know, my daughter gave up after 5 minutes of mopping. I knew she would! Thanks ladies for not making me feel stupid. :)

Kathy,

Sounds more like your line is clogged or your kitchen sink is clogged or very slow draining. I work at a plumbing co and just read this to the guys and they said the same thing, its not draining right or there is something wrong with the dishwasher itself. Run your sink and see if its draining slow since the dishwasher drains into same line. If not have someone come check the appliance to see why it happened. I dont think it had anything to do with the soap, because that is what I use and never had a problem. Hope this helped a little.

Not really sure what to do about the dishwasher. I just want to tell you I feel your pain. My husband is currently deployed to Iraq and has been gone now for 15 months. I'm here alone with an almost 4yr old boy, a 2yr old boy and I'm currently pregnant (result of his 2 weeks home). Give yourself some credit... it's not an easy road!

Hi Kathy,

So sorry about the mess - this has happened to me too. A couple of years ago, my "appliance guy" explained to me that the amount of soap needed to efficiently wash dishes, and wash clothes in washing machine is about 1/4 of what the manufacturers and soap companies claim. Apparently, using less soap keeps everything just as clean, and extends the life of the machines!
Now we use the amounts he recommended for dishwasher and washing machine. Everything comes out as clean as ever (actually, less soap scum on dishes and glasses).
I would guess that those pre-packaged amounts are really way too much for most machines.)
Good luck!

I use those all the time and never have had that happen. I also use them with the Plastic Boost, it works great on cleaning up your plastic containers, etc, the sauce stains come right out of my Tupperware, Rubbermaid, and all the others. As for your dishwasher, I would call and have it serviced.

Hugs,
T.

Hi Kathy, I use the packets all the time and havent had an issue, although your story makes me a little skeptic now. You could call the company though and they might be able to tell you what happened.Maybe someone in the factory wasnt paying attention at the job sight. They might even give you a coupon off your next box, if you dare use them again lol

A few years back I had my dishwasher repaired and I remember the man was telling me that you should only use a little dishwashing detergent...no more than a tablespoon. Even though you didn't use two packs, your dishwasher gets a build up of soap and is not good for it. Not only that, I don't trust the chemicals in that stuff. Try using less but there is stuff out there to clean the residue from detergents used in you dishwasher, I forget what it's called.
