I have twins and they both have their first cold. My friend came over to lend me a hand and offered to bathe my son while I put my daughter to sleep. When she returned my son was dressed with a cap on and he took his nap. Later that night when my son woke up I took off his cap and smelled vick's vapor rub on his head. I called my friend and she said that rubbing a bit of vapor rub on a baby's head and then covering it is an old trick to help decongest them. I was mortified!!!! She put the vapor rub directly over his soft spot and it was slightly red. I washed it off but I cant help but to think that it absorbed into his head! Please someone tell me if I am overreacting or if he could have potentially absorbed some through his soft spot. BTW he is 4 moths old and a preemie. Thank you (Im a first time Mom)

What can I do next?

Usually Vic's is not harmful to anyone, and for some it can help a great deal (my daughter LOVES it, and I have used it on her since she was 3 months old and she is a smart healthy 4 year old now). I usually put a dab on my daughter's chest & feet.

With that if there seems to be redness tomorrow feel free to calmly call the ped/doc's and talk with them or a nurse about your concern. It may have irrated the skin but should be fine. If you feel you will sleep better call the 24/7 nurse line either at your childs' ped/doc office or the hospital, it is free and that is what it is there for.

I'm sure he's fine. Rest easy mama. A bit of vicks covered with socks on his feet will help too. :)
If you're wanting help with the congestion you can also put a humidifier in their room and prop their mattresses a bit.

Rest assured...you and other people will do way worse things to your children as the years go on. It is one of those home remedies that some people swear by, and others are terrified of. He will be just fine! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Tomorrow monring call your pediatrician or nurse just to confirm it, and set your mind at rest. No harm done.

She should have asked your permission before doing anything like that.
But it shouldn't hurt him, so you shouldn't panic.
Being a first time Mom is tough, and with twins it seems to double the anxiety.
I use Vick's on myself and my son on neck and chest.
I've tried the feet thing and it never worked for me (other than making my feet soft). It's bothersome to get out of hair (although it might help soften the scales if there's any cradle cap going on).
It's the scent of Vick's that helps me (I like the smell) and if you can't smell it - why bother? The menthol creates a sensation of heat and might locally increase blood flow in the skin a little bit. If I've got a cough, Vick's alone is not enough heat for me - I end up with a heating pad on my chest anyway.
Getting to 4 months before having a first could means you are doing an excellent job in caring for your babies!
You'll get through this. Hang in there!

As far as I know, Vick's is basically menthol and petroleum jelly. That's mint and Vaseline. The vapors from it tend to clear your nose. I don't know why. But I would suspect that it's as harmless as toothpaste and Aquaphor. I wouldn't worry about it one bit.

And ditto to what another mom said about the soft spot. That's just an opening in the skull so his brain can grow. It is only more vulnerable to sharp blows, not to anything else.

She should of told you..ran it by you first. I never heard of that before. I know I've heard of a lot of mojo...heck I come from a family that has a lot of "beliefs"..and some I'll take into consideration, some I'm just...like..YEAH right!

Is your baby acting out of the norm? I would call my pediatrician.

I really don't think that it's harmful and the soft spot is just part of their skull.

When in doubt..call your pediatrician. :)

I've never heard of anything bad happening by putting Vic's on the skin (even the soft spot). Lots of moms do that. Still, why not call your ped's office right now and ask for the nurse on duty. He/she has heard it all before and will be more than happy to ease your fears.

It shouldn't harm him. Normally you would rub it on the soles of their feet and put cotton socks on. This helps them sleep, keeps them from coughing, and is supposed to be relaxing. Ive always done the feet with my kids and myself. Im sure the head really isnt that much different. If your still concerned in the am call your ped. Being a first time mommy is hard! We tend to over react and worry worry worry. :) try to relax for the night!

My aunt used to do things like that ...it kinda pissed me off and freaked me out too but nothing bad ever happened...I would call the doctor if you need some reassurance...that's what they are there for...good luck

Just don't smear Vicks Vaporub under baby's nose -- a bit too toxic and I have read (maybe just old wives' tale) that it may permanently affect your child's sense of smell.
