Help! I Have a Two Year Old with "Dishpan Hands"!

My dd developed a penchant for "helping" with dishes (a good thing!) but she loves playing with the soap so consequently her little hands have become red, cracked, and are now bleeding! :( I sent my hubby out for "Dawn's Hand Renewal" dishsoap, which I think will help, but now I need some heavy duty salve or cream to help with her little hands. I tried Eucerin but it didn't seem to help. Any suggestions? A healing cream would be great, but also something to protect them would be helpful, too...
:) Thanks in advance, Mommas!

I would use gloves when washing, even if you have to tie them on to make them fit...and Aquaphore is amazing!

Try a diabetic creme - most store carry it. It is made to help the dry cracking skin to heal of diabetics and works really well. My mom was given it to use and it doesn't have a small. you can put in on thick and cover the skin for over night use and it works great! "diabetic creme"

HI S.. Go to Wal*Mart in the pet department and find a green & pink square tin called Bag Balm. It is really a balm that dairy farmers use/used on udders to keep them from becomming dry and cracked. You smooth it on her hands at bedtime and put socks or white cotton gloves (you can find them at any dance apparel or wedding shop and some craft stores) on over the salve. You will notice a difference after one night...and it's safe and not full of a ton of chemicals etc. Bag Balm has been around for years and years...my Grandmother uses it still in the winter so her hands don't become dry and cracked. Best wishes.

Start with some medicated Blistex like you would use for chapped lips. You'll want several tubes. This stuff is great. Then try Gold Bond Ultimate Healing. Hubby uses that. And the Vaseline lotion for healing. Forget the name. Keep her hands lubed well through out the day. You'll want to lube her up good after her bath and playing in the water, and before bed. Don't know if they make child size rubber gloves for doing dishes but you can try a adult small and see if those will work enough. She may need to take a breat from helping with the dishes for a while and get her hooked on sweeping, lol. One of my sons got hooked on that so we bought him a small utility broom, like a short handled push broom and he'd push and pull that all over the wood floors "helping", lol. Try the kids vacuums and the whole nine yards until her hands heal better. Maybe limit her time in the water too, or try cooler water for her.

AVON makes some really good lotions that help heal. I use either silicone glove or moisture therapy. If you put it on before she goes to bed it will have the most healing power because it will soak in overnight. If you need to order some my site is www.youravon.com/lvogan. I can have items shipped directly to you. My knuckles and cuticles were a mess until I used these at night for a few days. Now they are soft and not cracked like they were. Good Luck.

I would suggest Norwegian Formula Neutrogena Hand Cream. This stuff really works. You only need a little bit each time you put it on. My mom's hands used to get really dry, crack & bleed. She tried everything. Then she started to use the Neutrogena & it worked wonders. Her hands stopped being dry & cracking. You can use it anywhere you have dry skin. I've used it & I really liked it. It really helps.

Norwegian Formula consistently wins as best hand creme in tests. I have tried it and really like it. Aquaphor is good too. Vaseline works in a pinch. Whatever you use I would keep with ointment rather than creme. Cremes can be irritating.

I was also thinking that small gloves would help. If you try to cream her hands a few times a day they should heal. This time of year my hands always crack and bleed, especially if i forget to cream them.

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream is tops in my book, but if her hands are really cracked and bleeding... I would try some Neosporin for a day or two.

Aquaphor is fantastic. And I'd try to get your daughter her own dish washing gloves, to try to protect her little hands in the future! God bless her for helping!

Vaseline! It will work wonders. Lather her hands up before she goes to sleep and then cover her hands with socks or gloves. When she wakes up in the morning take the socks or gloves off and rush her into the bathroom to wash up. Follow up with a dollop of hand lotion. Her hands will be 100% better.
