Help Getting 2 Year Old to Take Medication

I have a 2 1/2 year old that last night was diagnosised with a bacterial infection in her ears, eyes and throat. She was prescribed Augmentin. She has been a very healthy girl and never had to take medicine before besides tylenol. When I tried to give her the medication this morning it was a struggle. She was crying and did not want to take any. I had to hold her down to try and squirt it in her mouth on the back side of her check and she still managed to spit it out. Is there any other ways I can make sure she gets her full dose of medicine that it is not such a fight?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your great advise. I did try many things. I found that mixing it with a lot of chocolate syrup and a little bit of milk worked best. She could still smell the medicine and taste it but I just led on that it was chocolate milk with vitamins. I gave her a choice to have her chocolate vitamin milk or take her medicine and she will always choose her milk. If she does not want to finish her milk, I just take out her medicine and she will finish it with no problem. She wants nothing to do with that medicine. Now the only problem I have is she has constant diarrhea.

Here is and idea that I know cause both my kids don't always like their meds. One is to shoot a little bit in and then blow in their face. That makes them swallow(really works if they are crying cause of the extra air). The other way I do it with my daughter is to let her suck it out, because the they feel that they are more in control of it. I think that one would be the better one of the two for your 2 1/2 yr old cause they tend to like having a bit of control even if its the small things. Hope this helps

With some medicines you can mix them with milk. Maybe call your pharmacy or your doctor to see if you can do that with Augumentin. I'm pretty sure you can. Also when my son won't take medicine I tilt his head back a little and pinch his nose shut so he has no choice but to swallow. And the farther back in their throat the better. What kind of dispenser do you have? We have the medicine dropper with the squeeze bulb at the top and that seems to work the best for us.

I have two things for you...one is my daughter had to be on Augmentin for all her ear infections and since it's so gritty make sure you wipe off your childs teeth after or brush them. No one told me that and it causes some problems for us it latched onto some cal deposits Natalie (my daughter) already had forming on her teeth and her dentist said it make it almost like plaster.
As for your main question, Augmentin smells and tastes terrible so I think that part doesn’t help. Our trick was we let her have the little measuring cup with kool-aid and taught her to drink from that and would give her the meds in the cup instead. No one likes to have to pin their child down especially when it’s for meds to make them feel better. It took a couple times with the juice before she would let us give her the meds in there. Just an idea.

See if where you got it filled at offers flavoring. I know the Walgreen's by my house will add different flavoring in it for a very small fee. The other idea would be to add it to some real sweet juice like Juicy Juice, only about 1-2 ounces though to make sure she will swallow it all.

we have a medicine syringe and the bulb dropper....give it to her in small doses it might work. also give it to her when she is calm. i tried to give medicine to my 20 month when she was upset and she spit it all over! waiting a few minutes and trying again is a better approach. could you offer a small treat if she takes it?? or stars/stickers??? i am not above bribing my kids once in a while :)

When my son had trouble with his medications, we always gave it to him in juice--and as little juice as possible. We usually tried 3 ounces or so, enough that it masked the flavor but a small enough amount that we could be sure he would finish it. The Augmentin is terrible stuff, and we also had trouble with it causing really awful diarrhea. We called a few times and they said to wait it out, but when he hadn't eaten anything for 3 days (thank goodness he was still nursing), we finally took him off it altogether. So if you have trouble with that, be sure to let your pediatrician know as well, and be sure you're taken seriously!
