Hi everyone, I have a one year old little boy that has eczema and has had it since the time he was three or four months old. It used to be concentrated mostly on his face, but he now has it on his back stomach and the worst part is in the creases at his wrists and ankles. We actually have it pretty well under control with prescription creams, Aquaphor and cotton clothes and he hasnt had it on his face in some time. In the other places, we get him cleared up and then he has another flare up. My main problem with it now is on his wrists and ankles. They get bad and scab up and then they itch him really bad and I dont know what else I can put on it. Like I said, its not as bad as it used to be, I was just wondering if there are some other moms of kids with eczema and what you do for it. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for all of your advice. I've tried a few things that haven't done much and as you all know, you can only try so much at a time or it will make it worse. But I'll keep trying. And I appreciate your responses so much. If nothing else, I know I'm not alone!

Hello T., have you tried an Aveno bath? I don't know much about all the new Aveno products they have out now, but the packets of the powder that you put in a bath worked for me. My daughter hasn't had problems with her ecxema in years , but that is what I did use when it was bad. I hope this helps

I am a stay at home mom of 3 children. I have worked with many parents over the years in helping them with problems like excema, psorasis, ADHD, sensitivities, allergies, asthma. The first thing that pops into my mind when reading your request for help...is the everyday products you are using. 90% of todays products, contain Formaldehyde (listed as Q-15 or Quarternium-15) This is a known cheap preservative that companies use to prolong shelf life of products. Your skin and especially childrens skin is like a sponge..it absorbs EVERYTHING it comes in contact with. Q-15 can be found in many cosmetics & industrial substances. It can also be found in (but not limited to) moisturizers, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, nail polish, soaps, body washes, baby shampoos, baby wipes, baby lotions, sunscreen, self tanning agents, papers, inks, facial cleansers. It can cause contact dermatitis, a symptom of an allergic reaction, ESPECIALLY in those with sensitive skin, on infants skin and on sensitive areas such as the genitals. (taken from Wikipedia and the Toxic Chemical ____@____.com)

So I want to to think about this for a moment....The creams work for awhile...things calm down and then flare up again...the cycle just keeps continuing...the creams are helping the SYMPTOMS...you need to find the CAUSE and get rid of whats CAUSING the symptoms. I can offer you alot of information...would take all day on here.I have done 6 years worth of research on the chemicals around us today and how they affect our families. Please feel free to contact me using the info below, I would be more than glad to help you further...if you or anyone else needing more info lives close enough we can talk in person or over the phone!

My 3 year old has Eczema ALL over her body...I used Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream and Body Wash....it helped keep the itching under control and seemed to keep the redness down too....We also took her to a dermetologist and he precribed a prescription that we use during the dry season *fall and winter* as he said that is when it will flare up the most...We also started giving her showers instead of baths *which i know is hard with littler ones* but the derm said make her water exposer to a minimum..Hope this helps. Hi T.,
Several members of my family have eczema problems and what has worked best for us is to use a 100% vegetable based soap (we buy it at Michaels for $9 - 32oz block). We heat it in a sauce pan until it melts and then add 1 cup chamomile and 10 drops lavender oil. Both are safe for babies. Once the soap is hot then pour it into muffin tins and place in the freezer for a couple of hours to harden. The ph is much better in this soap than commercial soaps and should relieve the eczema.
I hope this helps.

I have the same problem with my son he is 19 months and has it since he was about a year old, luckly most childern out grown it by 2 or 3. I have found myself going to an alergist over this problem with flare ups. With the ragweed being this month its been the worst ever. He is finally starting to calm down, but we do a cream called triamcinolone an oral med called hydroxyine which works wonders at night since that is all he does is itch..So other words I haven't had any sleep in months.. There is a really good article in the oct. parents magazine on eczema. I had it has a child but not so early and never out grew it but i have had my under control for at least 3 years..

My 3 year old son has had eczema since he was about 4 months old. I took him to a dermatologist, who prescribed Triamcinalone and it works pretty well. The other thing my dermatologist recommended was having my son take a 10 minute or less bath every day, followed by his medicine and then a skin cream (not just a lotion). We use Equate Dry Skin Cream (it comes in a plastic jar) from Wal-Mart. It is the generic of Eucerin, I think, and it works really well. She said the bath prepares the skin to accept the moisture of the lotion better. During his flare-ups we also coat him really good with lotion when he's getting ready for bed.

Hi, my son is now 10, his eczema started around 3-4 mos. on his head and face. Through the years when it was real bad on his ankles I tried to make sure socks werent tight, shoes werent tight and not plastic or leather . Summer was no shoes or flip flops. The same with the wrists elastic and/or tight bands can keep skin irritated. I also have some advise for when children with eczema are older and have scratched themselves raw, creams and lotions burn, water hurts and they dont want you to clean it or touch them. NEXCARE no sting bandage spray. It was a lifesaver for my son, it seems to calm the skin without anyone having to touch it.

Hi T., I have eczema and have passed this lovely skin condition on to my daughter. Things I do to help her are: no bubbles in the bathtub, lotion after each bath, no fabric softner on her clothes, sunscreen everytime she goes outside, and Eucerin lotion on her affected areas (mostly it's on her face). In myself, I've noticed that it flares up when the seasons change and when I'm stressed, so I watch for those signs with her as well. Hope this helps.

Hi T.,
My daughter has eczema too. Her doctor told me not to use Johnson Baby products and to switch to Aveeno. We use the Aveeno bath and lotions. We also use Aquaphor and Eucerin for lotion as well. Her skin has really cleared up. I found out she had eczema when she was 2 or 3 months old. I also use fabric softner for sensitive skin. The doctor also told me when I wash her clothes rinse them twice before drying. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear about your little son's eczema. I had eczema pretty badly when I was a baby and child. I have pretty much outgrown it now, with an occasional spot here and there.

The main thing is to be gentle on the skin. I would recommend Aveeno products for your son. They are made with oatmeal, and are a big help for this condition. Keeping him clean and dry is essential. If there is excess moisture on the skin, such as in the creases of the arms or legs, that's going to lead to flair ups there. Have you investigated dietary contributors? Sometimes dairy products can contribute to eczema, which is tough for a baby to eliminate from the diet since they need milk! Try talking to your doctor or a nutionist about diet for your baby, and consider orange juice with calcium as a supplement to milk. Consider organic whole milk. You never know what dietary things may be contributing to breakouts. Lastly, you may want to try a mild prescription steroid cream to help him heal and stop itching. I hope this helps! Good luck!! This too shall pass.

In our experience, creams and lotions only irritated my son's eczema. We used a prescription and then lanolin cream! If you breastfeed, you might have Purlan or Lasinoh left from early sore nipple days. If not, you can get a 3oz tube for a few dollars. It seemed to be the only thing that helped (and actually, I have used it on a couple dry patches when my eczema flares up in the winter and it worked well!)
Good Luck:)

Hi T.,
I don't know much about Eczema. But my oldest son just recently acquired a rash that the doctors told him was an allergic reaction just to find out after the medicine that it came right back. I work for a company that makes all natural products that are healthy for the home and body. They have a lotion called renew that has helped my son with the rash that didn't clear up after the steriods were gone. It doesn't itch as bad and the splotches are not as noticeable. I will attach my website so you can look into becomeing a prefered customer. They have great products and my kids love them I hope you will too. Good luck.

I would try some probiotics and omega-3 fatty acids.

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria in our intestines. An imbalance with bad bacteria sometimes shows up on our skin.

People with skin issues can also respond well to omega-3's, like in fish oil. Omega-3's are also anti-inflammatory.

Probiotics can come in powdered form or the capsules can be pulled open and added to the child's beverage. Nordic Natural makes a strawberry flavored fish oil that all my kids will take.

It may take a month or two to see results with these supplements. Have you tried taking him off milk?
