My 3 years old was in the shopping cart when I bought pork that was leaking....she touched that and then suck her thumb! I think that she might even licked some of the juice (It was marinated with some sweet stuff). That was Monday I believe, today is Wednesday and she is vomiting and nothing can stay in her stomach, I will call the doctor tomorrow if she doesn't get better by morning, in the beginning I thought that she came up with the stomach flu, she complains about stomach cramping and vomiting, no fever for now. Any suggestions or advice until for now? Can the juices of the marinade be too bad? I have been reading on the Internet that raw meat is bad but not too dangerous and also they were talking about the meat and the amount of it...Does anybody knows about this issue? Any info will be greatly apreciated. Also how to keep her hydrated if she can't keep anything in her stomach. Not even a teaspoon of coke stays!
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone that replayed!!!!! She seems a lot bettter today! She woke up 4 times until about 1am and then slept through the night after drinking some water. She woke up happy this morning and had some more water and a few rice cereal flakes. She slept by my side so I could see if there was anything wrong. It is amazing though because she didn't look sick at all, she was vomiting and singing the next second! She is strong and tough! I have read about triquinosis or triquinelosis and it is almost gone in this country with the new tecnology so it is very rear to get the infection, but when it is regarding your 3 years old you always worry.... She is taking a nap now, we went to teacher conference this morning and then to get some rice, crackers and pedialite and other things for her to eat healthy and keep her hydrated, thank God she is drinking fluids without trouble now!
Thanks again to everyone that took the time to answer my desperate question. You are all awesome! Thanks!
M.

With the dangers these days of trichenosis (sp?), e-coli, and salmanella it is better to be safe than sorry. Please take her to urgent care or her pediatrician asap. Even if it turns out to just be the stomach flu it is best to have the worse ruled out.

Praying for your little one,
Beth

This sounds a lot like Trichinosis, which is a parasite found in raw meat, particularly pork. The "juices" of raw meat can contain Trichinosis cysts as well. Here's a website with info.

It also resembles salmonella or any other food poisoning episode. Most will resolve on their own, but dehydration is an issue. Also since pork was involved, Trichinosis is a possibility, and that won't resolve on it's own.

Raw pork contains many bacteria. And the smaller you are, the worse your reaction. Pork and chicken are two meats that under no circumstance should you ever eat undercooked or raw.

Just remember not to give her anything that will make her stop vomiting or relieve the diarrhea. Her body needs to get the poisons and toxins out. If you give her any of those medications, it will keep it in her body and she will stay sick or get worse.

Sugar is bad! Do not give her coke. The basic fluid of life is water. But if she has gone a while without eating or drinking, she needs electrolytes. Gatorade has too much sugar, it needs to be watered down 1/1. Pedialyte is perfect. They even have freezer pops.

If she cannot keep a thing down, you should go to the doctor or ER right away. She may be dehydrated and need fluids via IV.

There is a stomach flu going around here that involves vomiting with no fever. It just went through the entire family of my neighbors.

But only a doctor will know for sure.

Go ahead and call the doctor. Just to be on the safe side, also this could save you time and money later. You don't want to have to rush her to the ER where they do spinal taps on most young children to rule out meningitis. Remember that a large amount of the raw meat would be needed to make an adult sick, but children are so much smaller that a very small amount to us is a lot to them. Just be careful and watch her consistantly!!
