My kids and I have been seeing loved Dr. Peter Moskowitz for over 4 years. I wish he could be my doctor, too. He's amazing!

Ladies I need your help.
My sister took her 5 week old to the pediatrician today for his circumcision. The doctor got 1/3 of the way done and said there were "complications." They then had to go to Primary Children's Hospital to see a pediatric urologist to see if it could be fixed. The urologist said he was too swollen to do anything about it now and her baby would have to have penial surgery to fix/finish the circumcision at 6 months. That means going under anesthesia.
Obviously my sister is VERY upset. This is her first child (that took them 9 yrs to have) and she is devastated. So a couple of questions: Has this ever happened to you or anyone you know? Can you offer any advice on how to go forward? She is extremely uncomfortable putting her little guy "under" at such a young age and wants to wait at least a year. (I'd wait even longer....) Do you have any experience with surgeries for non-life threatening conditions at such a young age? How have your kids reacted to the anesthetic? (Another issue is that her husband was adopted and they have no idea of family history on allergies or sensitivities to medications, etc...)
Also, I am of the opinion that her pediatrician is a/an _____ (fill in the blank) and would love some recommendations for a doctor you trust. She is in the Riverton area but will travel to a decent doc. I will take any and all recommendations and worry about insurance later. We really just need some help here. We are all a bit in unfamiliar territory.
Thanks, Ladies.

My son had his circumcision at 6 months at Primary's because of complications (the dr didn't even want to attempt it) and did very very well. Having done it, I recommend arranging for both parents to be there-- or at least to have a second adult that the child knows and is comfortable with so that if you need to get a nurse or something one can go while the other stays with the child. Also, really really loose-fitting clothes to change into afterwards (we took a shorts/tank creeper that was a size or two too big) and my son was EXTREMELY hungry/thirsty afterwards (you have to limit feedings beforehand) and so he was mad until the nurses let him have a second little bottle of formula (he was already weaned from nursing)-- so just be prepared for that. Kids aren't real happy coming out of it, in my experience, but they recover quickly. If he has a comfort object or blanket, label it and take it along.
The drs at Southwest Children's Clinic are all really good-- it's on 90th south at Redwood... kind of behind and to the right of the Chuckarama. We've seen all of them and love them all!
Does any one in your family have problems with anesthesia? If so, he may have a harder time. If not, then he should be fine. My husband does great with anesthesia, I don't need much and it takes a LONG time to wake me up. Our youngest son has had 15 surgeries by the time he was 15 months old. Some times he had two in one day with a total of 4 in four days skipping one day. I have been told that a surgery can delay your child about one month as it takes that long to heal. My son didn't hold his head up until he was almost 8 months, didn't crawl until he was 15 months and didn't walk until he was 20 months. Where my other kids have all held their heads up at 3-4 months, crawled at 6-7 months and walked at 10-12 months. But you are talking one surgery. Vs by the time my kid was 6 months old he had had about 7-10 surgeries. The urologists up at Primary's are very good, one of my surgeries was done with the urologist. I would have to look in my bills of notes to find which one it was, as he did the surgery as a favor for my general surgeon that has overseen all of his surgeries. As for pain meds, again if the parents are sensitive to pain meds, then he may also. I am sensitive to a few "addictive" meds, after taking one pill I get withdrawal symptoms. My son, also can't handle morphine as it stops his heart. As for a new Dr. I would have her ask the urologist, the dr's at primary's deal with lots of dr's from all over the valley. My general surgeon recommended me to a very good pediatrician in American Fork, we love her tons. So I would ask them to recommend you to one.
I don't have any advice on the circumcision since we have not been through it yet. Our pedi is Dr Jimmy Ryan. He is in Riverton on 12600 S 1300 W. We have been going to him for almost 3 yrs now and love him.
My daughter did have tubes put in at 15 months and the anestesia didn't bother her at all. I think it was worse for me than it was for her.
My husbands was "botched" when he was baby as well. They corrected it when he was about six months, things went fine and that was 37 years ago. Medical technology is far better now but I do understand the frustration. As far as the pediatrician goes mine is fabulous. Dr. Jopling at Wasatch Pediatrics in midvale. Off of 7200 south and highland drive. The office is open 7 days a week and there us someone on-call every night. They also take most insurances. They are also open late. All the doctors there are great. Hope this helps. I grew up in riverton and I think it would probably only take her about 20 min to drive there.
I can not give you any insite about the circumcision. I am so, so sorry. I hope the little guy is not in any pain! I can tell you that the doctors at Wasatch Pediatrics are wonderful! My girls go to Dr. Galina Hornyick. She is absolutely fantastic! I interviewed about 5 pediatricians before settling on her and I have been very happy. They have other doctors as well. They are located in Draper. You can check out their website at www.wasatchpeds.com They have several offices. Go to the Draper office. Good luck and my heart and prayers are with that baby boy, his mom and dad!
I only have girls so I am not very knowledgeable about circumcision. However my oldest was born with a cleft lip. So right away we got into a doctor to schedule a repair. It wasn't until the next day that I broke down crying at the thought of my baby under anesthesia. Unfortunately before we even got to that surgery it ended up she was hospitalized and needed a brain surgery. After she went through about 5 surgeries in 9 weeks and was put under for an MRI the lip thing was a cake walk. However, I will tell you it is never easy to give your child up to a surgery team and give them a kiss to say bye until you see them again. It is a hard thing, but it is better do it sooner because the less they remember. Plus as my daughter has gotten older when she has had to have more surgery it is harder when she comes out of the anesthesia, because she is more confused. It was easier when she was a baby coming out of the anesthesia.
Anyhow good luck and I am SO sorry this happened to your sister. That sounds horrible.
OMG! I cannot believe this! How sad for your poor sister! I only have girls, so I've got no experience with the whole circumcision thing, but I can make a good recommendation for a ped and I can give you my experience on anesthetic at a young age.
My daughter was born with a congenital birth defect and had to have an MRI done when she was 6 months. Its not fun to go through my any means. There is no eating for 6 hours prior, it must be done IV, and on and on, just as an adult would be put under. However, Primary Childrens(I'm assuming this is in SLC) is WONDERFUL. They know what they're doing, and they were great with us. The only thing they didn't do was call us when she done with the MRI which they said they would do, so she'd been out and alone in a crib for a few minutes. The vein was hard to find on my daughter, but they bring in this light that lights up all their veins and makes it a little easier. The hardest thing for me was that they were late, due to another patient's difficulties and so my baby fell asleep in the mean time! They gave her some anesthetic but when they took her from me to do the MRI, she woke up! They simply gave her more meds, but I would have preferred to not hear her crying for me!
Anyway, overall, its just a sad memory, but nothing went wrong, and she was sleepy for the majority of the day, which was actually nice because I was able to just hold her and we both fell asleep for a few hours together.
A great Ped is at the U of U. His name is Charles Ralston. I'm not sure if he's accepting new patients or not, but he's in Clinic 6 up there. He was the attending phys. when we had our second daughter and was wonderful, so we switched our other daughter and now both of them go to him. He's very fun and friendly, and for the longest time my oldest called him "Grandpa Ralston". He's understanding and listens to my concerns, but also doesn't jump to conclusions and run every test out there for the littlest things. He's neutral and doesn't push me to change my views on some issues(like vaccines).AND my favorite part?! He answers his own calls- if I have a question in the middle of the night, I don't get the attending physician who's never seen my kid and who I don't know. HE calls me back himself! Anyway, I'm a fan. Email me if you need any more info! And best of luck for your little nephew!
We were lucky our pediatrician noticed early that he didn't want to go ahead with the circ so he referred us to PCMC. One of my two that were referred had to wait and have surgery at 6 months (although he didn't have to heal from previous attempt). The doctors there are great, it took about 20-30 mins & we were home before 10am. He was sleepy most the day, but eat well & didn't seem to have an bad reactions. It's hard as a mom to see you baby go through that, I recently had one in NICU, the surgery was easier, no tubes, just IV. Good luck. The Peds Urologist up at PCMC are truly great, Dr Wallis is who we had.
