I am a cake decorator. Butter cream frosting can sit unrefrigerated for up to three days. It will be fine.
I've made a cake to frost and forgot to make room in the fridge for it afterwards. Can butter cream frosting (made with shortening and butter) sit out at room temp. for 24 hrs before we eat it? I know butter can sit out at room temp. but what about the shortening?

Butter can sit out for weeks and not go rancid. In the pioneer days they ate it within a few days so it didn't have a chance to go bad.
The only thing that effects the frosting for me is if it has milk in it. I do have a recipe that is for powdered sugar, butter, and milk. It must be refrigerated due to the milk content.
If you are not using any milk or other dairy that has to be refrigerated then it is fine to leave the cake out.
Butter and eggs do not have to be refrigerated, they just stay good longer if you do.
Honestly? Your question makes me giggle. Why wouldn't shortening of all things not be able to sit out? Do you keep it in the fridge? I keep mine in a cabinet above my sink and sometimes the same can sits there for a year...never had a problem with it.
I realize it's past the point now, but yes, you can leave buttercream frosting out. I hope your cake tasted delicious!! :)
Our wedding cake had buttercream frosting (at my request - so my compliments on your choice). It sat out with no problem - leftovers lasted a week.
When I frost cookies with buttercream I always let them sit out to harden up overnight so they can stack in the tuperware without smooshing, Ive never had a problem with it.
Yes it's totally fine. The shortening is actually shelf stable and never has to be refrigerated.
The shortening will last longer out of the fridge than the butter. 24 hours is no problem. In the heat it might get melty because of the butter but it will be safe.
Yes, you never have to put it in the fridge, but I have one here in the 95 degree heat, and though it's inside, it's "sweating". Still fine to eat though! I hope the wording doesn't run...
It should be OK as long as it doesn't get too warm and start to melt ; )
Hi LD-
Should be fine...depending on the heat. It won't go bad...but may 'shmelt' if ya know what I mean.
I have gotten ice for my cooler for some items for tomorrow that I have no room for.
Best luck!

How much milk did you put in it? If it's just 1T, then you should be ok. (I've done that.) Just make sure you eat it within 24 hours or put it in the fridge.
