Helmet for Son Who Hits His Head All the Time.....

My son had the same issue, and when I asked the doctor about a 'helmet', he looked at me funny...not kidding, he looked at me like I was an alien. He told me that helmets at that age would not teach him that he needed to pay attention to where he was going, or how manuver around corners and edges that were painful. My son's Pedi recommended padding corners on tables, and keeping a close eye on where he was in the house. Also, he recommended using baby gates to keep him in areas I felt secure in him learning to walk on his own while I was doing things around the house.

It made sense to me once I thought about it. Also, my son's doctor said that helmets are only used for kids who have equilibrium issues or really need them for safety. If you have questions or concerns talk to your son's doctor and ask if he/she thinks a helmet would be proactive to help you little one stay safe.

On any given day my youngest has three-four bumps, marks or bruises on his head. He too started walking at 10 months and just GOOOOOOOEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSS! Sometimes he cries, but usually he just gets up and moves on. Sometimes he hits his head on the wall or furniture for fun. It makes him laugh. From my understanding, it's SO normal. He's very smart and I figure if he was doing any REAL damage it would make him cry and be more painful than if you and I bump our head on a table. My oldest son (almost 3) is very smart too...and he hit his head a lot. However, if you have really hard surfaces, like a fireplace or stone....I would take care with those, but walls and floor are normal. He'll learn!

Ah yes, my son used to like to run full steam while looking over his shoulder. He suffered many a head knock - and still does, though not as often. Two theories to go with 1) put a helmet on or pad corners to protect him and keep reminding him not to run into things or 2) let him keep hitting his head and the pain involved will eventually teach him. We went with #2 - and, when he did hit his head after not paying attention, we did not offer much sympathy. A quick check to make sure nothing was seriously wrong, a kiss on the boo-boo and a reminder that that's what happens when you don't pay attention. It seemed to have worked and at 5-1/2 years old - he's smart as a whip with the memory of an elephant so (aside from a few scars) I would say no damage done. I bought one of these for my son who stated crawling at 5 months. Has was hitting his head on everything. It lasted until he was 9 months old and he figured out how to take the thing off but I truely believe it saved us a trip of two to the ER.
