Helen Mirren or Cher?

Time flew by and suddenly Cher is 70...and so is Helen Mirren. (I remember the Sonny and Cher show...so what happened?!). Cher doesn't look 70, she looks young in a synthetic way. Helen Mirren doesn't look like a 70 year old "civilian" woman, but she looks like a woman over 60. My husband has commented how well Cher has aged, and how aged Helen looks. This makes me wonder: Should I join many of my friends in building a facelift fund or should I just care for myself and home nature is kind?

What can I do next?

Have you ever seen the TV show "Botched".

I personally would not choose to do a facelift or other injections. I live in Dallas which has a LOT of plastic people. I have seen so many botched jobs where women look hideous and they are stuck that way. Others look hideous and believe they look 20 when they are 70.

I think Helen Mirren looks classic and Cher looks fake. I have been fortunate so far and I will take my chances! That said, I am very particular with my facial routine/products and have been since I was a teen.

I've aged drastically in the last five years. I went from always been considered young looking to well .. not. I've been ill and it's aged me faster than children (sleepless nights) has.

I have just accepted it. I know I look strained and that after a vacation, I tend to look a lot better. I think mental attitude has a lot to do with it. Both those women love what they do and I don't know about their personal lives but if they are fulfilled and young spirited (they both seem very youthful) then that's all that matters.

I had surgery on my tummy after my kids because I couldn't wear regular pants two years after my last one. Here's what I have found. My stomach area looks like I am 15. Go up a foot, I look like a woman who has breastfed all her babies and is almost 50. Same if you go down - looks like I've had kids and am 50 ish.

So surgery is the kind of thing where I can see if you had it done on your face for example - you'd want to keep going, because otherwise it looks mismatched. But that's where people run into problems.

I just saw a show with Dolly Parton on it and she looked the same to me as 20 years ago. She jokes about how much she spends to look the way she does. I think she looks great, but it's really her spirit I find so youthful. I'm aiming to have that spirit not the look as I age.

your husband surprises me. i think they're both pretty gorgeous, but i'm with you, helen's natural beauty sparkles much more for me than cher's fairly manufactured 'youth.'
i'm not slamming cher. i think she's amazing. i loathe her music and always have, but i think she's a strong sexy talented gorgeous woman. however i don't think everyone needs to remain sexy to that degree.
i used to think i'd never consider surgery. after living with my Xtreme wattles for a few years i sometimes wistfully wish i'd saved up for a face lift fund.
but i didn't, and although we could probably squeeze the budget somewhere, there's always something more pressing to spend money on (like travel!)
i really really really wish i'd been more careful as a young woman to moisturize and sunscreen more. but it is what it is. few of us are really okay with seeing our looks go. but i'm just too lazy to drive myself nuts trying to clutch the illusion of youth.

I think Helen Mirren looks amazing. Not "amazing for 70", just amazing. So classy and elegant, yet has a great sense of humor. If I'm half as cool as she is at 70, I'd be psyched.

Cher just looks plastic. Ugh. She hasn't "aged well", she just has a plastic surgeon on retainer.

I've always said I won't ever touch my face. But done right, it can be a huge difference. Too much gets weird and plastic looking. My friend is married to a plastic surgeon. She gets Botox, etc for free. She's in her late 50's/early 60's. Every once in a while, we all go "wow, you look really fresh and well-rested today!". And she's like "I got a peel" or "Botox" or something like that. She always looks amazing, never fake, and it's made me rethink the "I'll never touch my face" idea. Luckily I don't need it yet. For now, a good face care regimen, plenty of water, exercise, good nutrition and sleep are all I need.

I don't see the big deal about a face lift. I think lip plumpers end up looking horrible but some face lifts are done very well. I have a friend who had some kind of brow or eye lift and you'd never know except she looked better. People dye their hair and spend time curling it and wearing makeup and such. What really is the difference except technology and money? I don't think someone should dip into important money to do it but if it's easily affordable for someone, why not? My husband says he'll divorce me if I have a face lift but I may want one. For me. We can afford it. If I just did a little to avoid the scary fake look, why not? Should I never color my hair or buy nice clothes or put on makeup to try to look good? So do what you like. Helen Murren to me looks great. She has a classic bone structure. She ages well. Cher wasn't as pretty to start with I think. My mother stayed beautiful well into her 80's. She has great bones too. Not everyone is so lucky. But it wasn't because of money at all that she still looked so good.

I like Helen Mirren. She's a classic looking lady. I love the roles she plays and how she handles herself.

Cher has had so many facelifts, I'm surprised that her smile isn't at her eyes.

I would take care of myself. Why get a facelift? What's the point? You're not an actress right? There's nothing wrong with aging.

Whatever you do or don't do, it should be a highly informed decision. It should be because YOU want to be happy in your own body, not because your husband or any other person has a skewed view of what 70 looks like. We have to stop being so hard on each other and deciding that 70 is old. It just isn't. How come men get to age gracefully and are called "distinguished" but women have to live up to someone else's definition?

I kind of have the view that I've earned every wrinkle and gray hair, and anyone who doesn't like it or who thinks less of me better not say something to my face about it. I choose to color my hair, but leave my skin alone.

And I think Cher is an underrated actress who has done some amazing work, and Helen Mirren is awesome as well - they just do different types of work. And they both are active in causes that are important to them, so I give them credit for using their influence in creative and passionate ways. One has chosen plastic surgery, one has not. Each woman's choice, not up to us to judge. But your husband has to get damn realistic about what it costs to look like women who've had a lot of surgery. Just saying...he's delusional if he thinks there hasn't been some work done on women who've been horribly pressured by the industry they work in. There are precious few roles to be divided among Mirren, Cher, Sally Field, Meryl Streep, Geena Davis, Glenn Close and many other terrific actresses of a certain age. And it starts early - Maggie Gyllenhaal was told that, at 37 or so, she was too old to be the love interest of her costar who was older than she is. Pretty pathetic!

First, Cher hasn't 'aged' well, she's been enhanced to quite a degree. Your husband probably isn't as aware of it, but it does look odd to those of us who are paying attention.

Helen Mirren looks pretty damn great. If I look like that at 70, I'll be happy. She radiates confidence and beauty in her demeanor. She's mature, sophisticated, and looks as though she leads a full, rich life.

Personally, I would never spend the money on a facelift, botox, or any other major interventions. I might get a good night cream... but I'd rather spend those exorbitant amounts of money making happy memories with friends and family. Youth is how you feel on the inside. Being a beautiful person is something which comes from within. I also wonder what sort of message that might send to my son and his friends-- that aging is bad and to be avoided or that I'm not okay with myself in regard to that process. Beautiful women aren't 'beautiful' because they look younger, they are beautiful for who they are.

Too expensive.
Best thing you can do is to wear sunscreen and avoid being in the sun for long periods of time.
Oh and don't smoke and avoid 2nd hand smoke.
Sun and smoke are not kind to your skin.

If you saw Cher without the wigs, without the professional crazy makeup, without the lycra spandex clothing to hold her jiggly stuff still, I bet she'd look as old or older than Helen Mirren.

Here's one image of her without makeup. Plus she's had surgery. All you have to do is look at the old Sonny and Cher photos and she doesn't even look like the same person. That's plastic surgery that's not aging.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/cher-goes-with...

Here's Helen without makeup. I think she looks healthier and more naturally beautiful.

http://www.eonline.com/news/665344/helen-mirren-69-looks-...

Cher has also had a hard life. She's lived hard and had a rocker lifestyle some of it. That takes a toll on a person too.

I think if you want to spend the money on a face lift then go as natural as possible. Don't go crazy.

M. Osmond looks so very different. Her eyebrows are half way up her forehead. That's not what you want. Jennifer Gray only got her nose done and it was so normal that she couldn't get work for years. But she looked very good afterwards, no duck lips, no protruding chins or cheekbones, no harshness.

So if you do decide to have surgery do it only because you want to. Then google mishaps for plastic surgery. Look at what you might end up looking like. Then research the doc and figure out just how much you want to have done.

A little goes a long way if it's done right. A little goes waaaaayyyy toooooo far when it's done wrong.

What a sad post this is. Neither of those women are "real women". They are both celebrities and have every possible thing available to them to keep them looking "young". Most "real women" don't have the money or connections to do so.

I would suggest you have a chat with your husband that maybe neither of you should compare you or any other women to celebrities or anyone else. It simply isn't realistic.

My mom had a facelift and frankly it was traumatizing for me to see. I will NEVER do anything like that to myself. I don't care how many wrinkles I get. If you are concerned about your looks, there are plenty of creams and things you can use to keep old age away as much as possible. I would suggest starting there. Good luck.
