Heat Rash

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has what appears to be heat rash. I had been treating with all natural baby products (bath soap and lotion)until now researching and reading that I shouldn't be applying lotion(clogs pores by trapping moisture). It's actually most noticeable on her face around her chin and also on her legs. My research suggested baking soda in cool/lukewarm bath and cool washclothes applied to localized areas. Also hydracortison cream (not ointment.)Anyone have any other suggestions to try?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the input. I started my daughters day without lotion and that made a huge improvement. I got some Aveeno oatmeal bath (for eczema) and used cornstarch after her bath. So far her skin is improved greatly...I'm keeping the baking soda idea as a next step.

Hi K.,

Baking soda really does work. I've used it on my son (who is 3) a few times when he's had a rash. You can also use the baking soda as a paste to put directly on the rash. You can also try Baby Aveeno. You can use it eather as a lotion or bubble bath. This too has helped my son. I hope that this helps! Good Luck!!:o)

Hi K.,

It is very humid out and that is what is causing this. I have the same problem with my little guy from time to time.So what I do, instead of rubbing him down with lotion after bath or shower, I use baby powder. Just lightly rub all over and it seems to clear it up within a day. It also prevents more from starting.

My grandson had a really bad heat rash last week, I personally thought it was chicken pox, that's how bad it was. Try the cool baths, an oatmeal bath won't hurt either (Aveeno has some). Definately don't use the lotions - they make it that much worse. Keep the child comfortable temperature wise and use the ocrn starch. A dip in a cool bath will help too - but make sure the temp is comfortable and not cold.

Hi K. -

I can help you with herbal therapy recommendations. First, when you say all natural, can you give me an idea of the brand and ingredient list?

Also, you didn't say whether you had any idea what was causing the rash. Additional info would be helpful.

Hello K.,
Try Bag Balm, it is the best stuff ever. It comes in a green can and you can buy it at Target, Wal-Mart & I believe Walgreens. Some stores have in the Pharmacy so you need to ask for it. It will heal anything and everything. It's been around forever. It is what the Farmers use on the cows after milking if they become sore or get rashes from the milking machine. Trust me, my husband used it on a heat rash once and was skeptical and now he doesn't use anything else.

are you sure it's heat rash? she may have a food allergy, if it's around her mouth. try eliminating common allergens from her diet.

i'm actually going thru it right now with my 15 1/2 year old!
I am trying oatmeal baths.I is getting a lot better. the main concern is the rash not getting getting in the mouth (rather swelling in the throat) so i am also giving him benadryl, and that took the redness out of the rash and the swelling down but makes him tired. if the rash does not start getting better in 3 or 4 days, i would definately go to the pediatrician. lots of luck

is it heat rash for sure?? - my son has had impetigo that he picked up at preschool twice this year - mostly around his mouth - he is a finger sucker - but another child at school had it on his arms. Impetigo actually requires an antibiotic. Good luck

K.,
My kids had this same problem. I changed my laundry detergent to Free and Clear
Then I found some products that really work well.
I do put baking soda in their bath every night and use Arbonne Baby Care Wash and lotion. It is a botanically product that is Pure, Safe and Beneficial.

It is the best that I have ever tried! I can get you a sample and you can see if it works for your daughter :)

We just went through this with my 13 month old daughter. We found that cornstarch works really well!!!! It cleared it right up and I noticed an improvement within a few hours. When you change diapers, just make sure that she is completely dry before you apply the cornstarch. Also, make sure that she is not overheating in whatever she is wearing. I think a culprit was her sleepersuit.

Hi K.,
I raised 2 boys in Queen Creek and the heat and dryness can really be a problem at times. My best remendy was corn starch. It is all natural and inexpensive. I would keep it in the fridge so it would be nice and cool when it would go on. It worked for my very active and always rashy boys. Good luck
