Hi,
I love smoothies but they are so expensive and have lots of calories so I want to start making them at home. Does anyone have any good fruit smoothie recipes that are also healthy? I mostly like the fruity kind..not really into the wheatgrass or veggie types unless you cant taste it in the recipe! haha

Thanks!

I get frozen fruit, strawberries, blueberries, pineapple etc. I also like adding fruit juice concentrate without the water. Just like 1/3 of a can or something. Usually, orange or pineapple juice. I also like adding banana and rice milk. =D

I use milk, fresh banana or strawberry (or both), a little ice unless I had frozen the banana and add 3 tablespoons of my favorite protein powder (about $2.50 per serving). It is Delish!

The great thing about smoothies is that you don't need a recipe. I usually start with some OJ, a bit of milk or plain yogurt, frozen fruit of my choice (I like frozen pineapple and mango, my son likes bananas and strawberries), a couple of ice cubes, blend it all together and you've got a smoothie (you may need to add more liquid, play it by ear). The smoothie places in the mall or wherever usually add sugar syrup to sweeten the smoothies (talk about empty calories and turning a healthy beverage into a dessert). I find that there's plenty of sweetness from the frozen fruit and OJ.

Blueberry Smoothie- (2 servings)

1 cup blueberries
1 cup van ice cream or fro yo
6 oz Blueberry yogurt
1/2 cup milk

Yum!

A favorite in our home is what my boys call the Shrek Shake

1 apple
1 orange
a handful of spinach
half cup of water
4-6 ice cubes

You can't taste the spinach at all but it does give the shake an awesome green color!

Like Kristin said, you don't need a recipe just toss things together and you will find some great smoothies.

I usually do 1 c frozen strawberries, 1c frozen blueberries and some vanilla yogurt and water. I do water so I am not adding any morne calores and it helps it blend. I also throw in a beet for my veggies, but definitiely don't need to! I usually just mix whatever I have.

My kids' favorite:
equal parts (about a cup each?) OJ and cranberry juice, 1/2 blender of frozen strawberries, one banana, that's it! (If it's not sweet enough for your taste use apple juice instead of cranberry)

I keep mine healthy and cheap by using half frozen costo fruit only mixes (tropical mix, berry mix, stawberries), then I mix with a bit of fresh fruit like a pealed orange, half a banana, pear, or whatever I have on hand. I use juice to sweaten and If i want to add protein I use some yogurt or soy milk as well. I don't follow recipes, I find no matter what fruit I use, it comes out edible. The best trick I'v discovered is to let the frozen fruit sit in tepid water to soften a bit before grinding (just do it right in the blender then drain). The frozen fruit is used in place of ice and makes it thick and flavorful instead of watered down. You can also sweaten with dates, or agave nectar. Honey does not work well in smoothies because it crystalizes in the cold and you will get all the calories, but won't taiste all the sweatness. We have been regular smoothie makers since we've owned our Vitamix 7 years. Vitamix allowes you to keep all seeds and many peals in for nutrition but will grind them so they are undetectable.

I use yogurt as the base, vanilla is good if you like them sweet, but I usually use plain and sweeten w/ honey if I need to. Then I use frozen fruit; my freezer is always stocked! A splash of milk (you can use almond or coconut etc..) Strawberry & blueberry is a yummy combo with super antioxidants! Mango/ peach is also a good one :) Note: blackberries are seedy so I don't use them, but many people don't mind it. I will also put in ground flax seed, it doesn't alter the taste, either does spinach, but it turns such an ugly green color..I know, I know..it shouldn't matter because it's healthy, but I just love the color of the fruits! I will also make small popsicles with left overs; a delicious and healthy kid treat! Have fun making smoothies at home!

Our favorite is actually a spinach smoothie: water (or some juice like orange) to help the blender mix, one apple, one banana, handful of frozen mango chunks, 2 handfuls of raw spinach which you can't taste. You can also make it without the spinach, but why not? My kids have been drinking these a few times a week since they were about 18 months.

Here is my basic recipe:
1 cup cold milk or yogurt or kefir (Safeway makes some yummy flavors)
1 cup frozen fruit (if you have Krogers in your area, they often have their Private Selection organic frozen fruit on sale, in the freezer section).
2 heaping T instant pudding powder.

My favorite combos are:
1 cup vanilla yogurt + 1 cup blueberries + 2 T chocolate pudding mix

other good ones are:
1 cup vanilla yogurt + 1/2 cup mango + 1/2 peach + 2 T lemon pudding mix

Throw in a blender and blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute, until fruit is pureed.

I have found the better the yogurt, the more "dessert like" the taste is. :)

You can add 1 T wheat germ or ground flax seed for added nutrition; if that's too much, just back it down to 1 or 2 tsp.

Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Green Smoothie- Can also have glowing green smoothie w no fruit, and add stevia

Ingredients
-1 1/2 cups water

-1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
-3-4 stalks organic celery

-1/2 head of a large bunch, or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach- All women, especially those over 40, need adequate amounts of this essential nutrient. Iron enriches your blood and fights fatigue. Spinach and leafy greens are classic iron choices
-1 organic apple, cored and chopped- or granny smith apples
changes up
-1 organic pear, cored and chopped
- Stevia is okay for candida. If candida is a concern you should pull fruit out from the Glowing Green Smoothie and add stevia instead as needed for sweetness!

vegobsession.com has some good recipes.
This week I've been using canteloupe, wild bluberries, bananas, with a splash of almond milk in mine. It varies every week what I use, depends on what fruits I buy. I also throw a handful of baby spinach into each one, you CANT taste it.

Any fruit you like, I like to keep some frozen berries, stawberries and peaches around, and either water, yogurt or milk - it depends whether you want it be lighter or more filling. If you're doing them as a meal substitute, I also put in a little oatmeal occasionally (makes it very filling).
Instead of sugar or honey I put in a piece of ripe banana to sweeten it.
Good luck.

I make both fruit and veggie smoothies. For fruit, I put two servings of whatever I have on hand with a handful of organic baby spinach. I can't taste the spinach but depending on the fruit the smoothie might be green.
For a veggies, two servings plus and apple to sweeten it some. I also leave in the leaves and seeds for that concentrated nutrition.
I use purified water to liquefy them and sometimes add a protein powder.

This is my favourite fruit drink that I have used to lose a lot of weight before:

One banana, handful of strawberries, watermelon, kiwifruit and any other fruit you have. Fill up the cup with the chopped fruit, then top up with pineapple and coconut juice. Whizz it all up with a hand blender. Delicious, healthy and filling!

Ours is very simple: ice up to the liquid line on the blender, one Yoplait yogurt (we like orange, but they have berry, etc.), one or two bananas, which makes it thicker. You can add fresh fruit if you have it, but we sometimes leave it as is. They are not very thick smoothies, but so easy to make, and the ingredients are healthy and simple. Enjoy your new recipes!
