Healthy Breakfast Cereal and Yoghurt That Are Low in Sugar

I'm about to return to school after summer vacation. I'm trying to find a cereal that can be made quickly at my daycare. I've been looking for an instant baby oatmeal, but with little success so far. Instant adult oatmeal is packed with sugar. Also, any advice on low sugar yoghurts. I'm horrified at the amount of sugar in yo baby yoghurt.

Thanks.

M.,
I had the same concerns you have. I've found that Ralphs carries an organic instant oatmeal that's easy to prepare and very low in sodium and sugar. It's by Private Selection and my son seems to like it fine. Also, I prepare it at home with hot milk and take it to his daycare where they microwave it for 30 seconds and it's good to go!

Good luck!

I just use Quaker oats with my kids. You can add milk and heat in the microwave. For regular cereal try the Kashi brand cereals.

I would make a fruit puree using dried fruits (soak and then puree it) and add it to plain yogurt. You can also use Quaker Oats and make sure they're really well cooked and soft for babies over 12 months.-www.weelicious.com

The instant oatmeal does have a lot of sugar, but we sift most of the sugar out, and there's still a hint of sweetness but most of the sugar has been sifted out. Try it!

Gerber makes a baby oatmeal with DHA that my daughter loves. Most times she just eats it plain, but sometimes we add fruit. And we usually eat plain Greek yogurt, but will sometimes add fruit to that as well. The only sugar is that occurring naturally in the fruit. Hope this helps.

You can always make a big batch of oatmeal when you have the chance and refrigerate it. Just take a scoop out every morning and reheat it as needed in small servings. Works fine.

Hi M.,

You can take adult instant oats (the kind in the tubs- not individual packets)and blend it in a blender until it has a powder/flour type consistancy to it. Then you can use it to make your oatmeal with water (I make it with milk @home) and you can add however much sugar/honey/agave/maple syrup that you would like. Also, fresh fruit, applesauce or thawed frozen fruit (which usually have some of the juice from the fruit when thawed)is good to add on top. It will put in a serving of fruit to your cereal. The instant oats are good because I don't think that they have any added sugar and when you blend it up it cooks in NO-TIME! The packets are the ones loaded with sugars because they are usually flavoured.

I've also crushed cheerios (very low in sugar) and added warm milk to that as well. My son is a big Wheetabix fan (crushed up with milk and a pinch of cinnamon- hot or cold, but let it sit in the milk for a few minutes to get that "hot cereal" consistancy. Again , with the fruit variations above.

Also, plain greek or middle eastern yogurts are really yummy with the fruit variations as well.

I hope that this helped!

K.

I buy a bag of Coach's Oats 100% Whole Grain Oatmeal from Costco. They are steelcut oats that you can microwave and eat in 4 minutes. I just make it with water and add whole milk to thin it out to the consistency we like. Then I add raisins to it. I've been giving it to my 2 year old for awhile now and she loves it. In fact, we just had it this morning.

As for yogurt. I buy the Stonyfield Farm Yo Kids Squeezers at Trader Joe's. I freeze the whole box and take out tubes as needed to give to the kids for breakfast or for snacks, and it's like a popsicle/ice cream treat for them. 9 grams of sugar in 1 tube. If that's too much sugar for you, cut the tube in half for each child. Otherwise, plain yogurt all the way with fresh fruit added.

I use regular oatmeal (quaker or store brand whatever is on sale). I take 1/3 cup oats and dump it in a bowl and then I add half of the 1/3 cup (so I guess 1/6??? I just eyeball it) of water and microwave it for 60 seconds. After that I add mix-ins. Here are some of the variety of things I have tried and Liked (I only use 2 or 3 each time): rasins, chopped banana, diced apple, dried apple, dried cranberries, fresh blueberries, fresh raspberries, peanut butter, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pecans, a little brown sugar, a few chocolate chips, cinnamon. I do a serving of fruit, some protein, and sometimes a tiny bit of something sweet. I add it in when the oatmeal is still warm and mix it up. If I am using fresh fruit I add it after mixing. I add a little milk to make it cool and creamy. My 21 month old fights me for it every morning. If your little one is a little younger and needs it softer you can add more water and increase the cooking time. If youuse baby food or puree you can add that as well. If it is too thick you can put some oatmeal in the blender by it self before cooking just for a few seconds to make it smaller. Do a bunch and put in your freezer. You can also make a big batch and put in in a muffin tin line with wax paper and pop in the freezer. Once you reheat it you can add what ever you need. Than might be the fastest, easiest way. As you can see there is so much variety. I never get bored. I am always thinking of new combos to try too! enjoy!

I like the Brown Cow plain yogurt for my little guy - I usually put some applesauce in it to sweeten it up just a little. And there is a baby oatmeal from Healthy Times that is easy and not sweet.

Hey M.,
I'm not sure about the cereal, but I do know that you can buy plain yogurt that does not have added sugar. If you want to sweeten it with something, add a teaspoon of fruit juice sweetened fruit spread. The spread is available in the jams and jellies aisle of most grocery stores. Trader Joe's has a great selection if you have one near you.

I get an organic instant oatmeal at Costco. I don't find Yo Baby to have a "horrifying" amount of sugar, but if you do, I would suggest plain yogurt. Even if you add fresh fruit it will have that amount of sugar in it though. The nice part about Yo Baby is that it is real sugar, not high fructose corn syrup like alot of them have, and fruit puree.

Hey M.,

Instant oatmeal is usualy just oatmeal gound to finer consistency so it can be quickly mixed. Try pulverizing some regular fast oatmeal in your blender or food processor. pcking in a baggie with insructions to mix with a little hot liquid - milik, soy, water.

My granddaugher (14 months)likes plain yogurt with no added sugar -- all in what you bcome used to. Or sweeten plain yogurt with pureed fruit or a dab of juice. make enought fot he seek in small snack cups ready to go.

Good luck and good for you for sticking to low sugar for your already sweet baby.

Hi there
Plain cheerios are low in sugar. You can also get Weet-A-Bix at Trader joes. It is shredded wheat, but let it sit in milk for a while and it has an oatmeal texture. Try natural Greek yogurt, or plain yogurt and mix your own fruit puree in
Good luck

Yo Baby has 12 grams of sugar while most other brands have at least 23 or more. It is a lot but it's the lowest I've found. Unless you buy plain with no flavor I think Yo baby is your best bet.

I don't know about cereals sorry.

I buy plain yogurt and add fruit into it. That way you make sure there aren't any artificial flavors and extra sweeteners. It only takes a minute to cut or or mash the fruit and add it in. Also, you can make real oatmeal twice a week, and then refrigerate it and use what you need each morning. Add in your own fruit, cinnamon, etc. You don't need to add in any sugar or butter or anything, the other stuff will flavor it.

You can buy plain (no sugar) instant oatmeal. As for the baby yogurt, stonyfield organics is sweetened with fruit but I always bought plain yogurt and mixed in my own fruit puree.
