Hi W.!
There are some great recipes in "Deceptively Delicious!" by Jessica Seinfeld (Jerry's wife) there are several different options and all are great!!!!
I've pondered this and considered buying a cupcake for my baby to have on his 1st birthday because he is lactose intolerant and becomes irritable and writhes with abdominal discomfort. I'd like to experience the joys of that first birthday cake with my son and with the rest of the family. Does anyone have a place they have ordered a healthy alternative?
Hi W.!

The Spiral Diner in Fort Worth hospital district has wonderful vegan options...which woudl also mean no dairy.
Try http://www.sugarlessdelite.com/ Sugarless Delite at Campbell/Coit. They can often make specialty cakes. At one point Fit-n-Delicious (aka Laura's Bistro) was real good with specialty cakes - but she just closed recently.
what about a cookie cake? Or make a cake with soy milk
I saw a sign at Central Market advertising gluten free bakery products. I'm sure if they make gluten free they could make lactose free. Maybe give them a call and check.
I ordered my daughters Wheat free/Dairy Free cake from Laura's Bistro in Plano....I was so impressed with their service and the cake was very yummy!!!
My nephew is completely allergic to all milk products, but he gets a birthday cake each year. My sister-in-law finds them on the internet. It's a pretty common allergy so there should be several. I will shoot her an email and see if she has a really good one and repost later. Good luck!
My son has an intolerance to the protein in cow's milk and use "milk" substitutes in all of my recipes. My favorites are the "So Delicious" coconut drink and Almond Breeze almond milk. Also available are soy milk, oat milk, hazelnut milk, rice milk and more.
I just re-read your question and realize I don't have a place to recommend you get your cake from. Maybe you can ask the baker to use an alternative milk.
i'm not sure about ordering a dairy free cake, but the next simplest (and tastiest!) thing i can think of would be using a namaste mix. i find them at natural grocers and the central market in dallas (but not the one in plano for some reason). we like chocolate the best, and the spice cake is exceptionally yummy too. beyond that, we've had good luck with this easy peasy, mix-in-the-pan recipe for vegan chocolate cake:
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons oil (I use olive oil) *[i use almond oil, yum]
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 cup cold water
This cake is so quick and easy to make because it can be mixed right in the 8-inch square *[i use round] pan. Do NOT grease the pan. Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt with a whisk until well blended. Pour the oil, vinegar, vanilla, and cold water (all at once) on top of the dry ingredients. Stir until all the ingredients are thoroughly blended together but do not over-mix. Bake at 350°F for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Delicious!

We didn't do cake for our kids until they were 2. We all had cake but at 1 they aren't going to know what they are missing. We took a picture of our baby with the cake but delayed all sweets until later so they wouldn't like sweets.
I second the Tom Thumb with the Kosher bakery. I have had several of their adorable birthday cakes at kids' parties and they are REALLY good!
Hi W.,
I am doing research for an article on childern with allergies and came across this website;
http://www.divvies.com/
She makes nut, dairy and eggs free baked goods and snacks and has been on Martha Stewart's show. Everything looked really yummy and really cute! Have fun smashing away!!!
BTW...If anyone knows of a Mom who is doing this in McKinney please let me know so I can include her on momunity!
This is a very exciting time for you and your little one. And it is very important that you enjoy this time together. My daughter has the same issues and just turned 5 last month. To play it safe, I have made my own cupcakes for her every year. Duncan Hines Cake mix has no dairy. Even the brownies are dairy free. Just oil, water and eggs needed. I also buy their brownies. Yummy! For frosting, I use Duncan Hines Whipped frosting. All else fails, I have ordered from Diivies. Great cupcakes and cookies. Good Luck.
You can buy mixes for cake and frosting that you can substitute the milk portion with rice milk (found in most grocery stores.) We've had good luck with Cherrybrook Farms and also Pamela's mixes (my daughter cannot have milk products either.) For ice cream, So Delicious is a soy alternative that has the same texture as regular ice cream (chocolate and strawberry are best.)
My son is dairy allergic and I have a few suggestions for you. If you are looking to buy a cake then I would go to the Tom Thumb on Coit and Campbell. It has a Kosher bakery. You need a Parve cake. Parve means it has absolutely no dairy. If you wanted to make a cake from mix most Duncan Hines contains no milk, nor does Cherrybrook Farms. Some of the canned icings also contain no milk but I always have to read labels to remember which ones. If you are interested in making cake and/or icing from scratch and need substitutions or recipe ideas please feel free to email me and I will be happy to give you some. I make and decorate my son's cakes every year.
Good luck!
Let me know if I can be of assistance!
Sublime Bakery in Fort Worth makes cakes (& cupcakes) to meet special dietary needs. I would try them!! Good luck!
For my son's first birthday we had a small "cupcake" for him and then a cake for everyone else. So the fact that he will have something different is actually a good thing. One option is you could make a batch of cupcakes using Lactaid instead of milk and see how they turn out. I am lactose intolerant and Lactaid has been a blessing to me when cooking. I don't know of a place who makes lactose free products, but I would check with Celebration bakery or another specialty place like that.
Any cake mix plus any can of soda makes a good cake that my son can eat and it's cheap and quick. Not super healthy. My sons allergic to eggs, too. Some frostings in the can don't have milk. I did mix + soda and then layered in a beach bucket w/ applesauce. My one year old loved it.
You can use rice or almond milk in any recipe to substitute for cow's milk. This is the recipe I use for my kids. We are gluten-free, dairy-free. This cake always gets rave reviews - even from people who insist they don't want to eat a "healthy cake". lol
Healthy Chocolate Cake
1 to 1 ½ c. Agave Nectar
1¾ c. Gluten-Free Flour
¾ c. Organic Cacao powder
1½ tsp. Baking powder
1½ tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. real salt
2 eggs
1 c. unsweetened almond milk
½ c. Coconut Oil (liquid)
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 c. boiling water
1. Heat oven to 350ºF. Grease and flour two 9-in. round baking pans. (I used one 9x13 rectangular glass pan)
2. Combine dry ingredients in large bowl. Add eggs, milk, oil, agave and vanilla; beat on med. Speed 2 min. Stir in boiling water (batter will be very thin). Pour into pan.
3. Bake 30-35 min. or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes.; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely.
It looks like you already have a lot of responses, but I didn't see this one. My son was dairy intolerant so I used regular boxed mix to make a cake for all of the guests and then Cherrybrook Kitchen boxed mix for him and me, since I was nursing. Go to their site, cherrybrookkitchen.com, to find a store closest to you. I only tried the chocolate and it was fine. Doesn't stay moist as long as a regular box mix. I used white store bought icing since most of them don't have dairy and I could color it as needed. Good luck and enjoy the party!
