I find myself waking up at 2am (or thereabout) almost every night and can't go back to sleep. Usually I am boiling hot, i can feel sweat bubbling to the surface or my shirt is already soaked. after i wake up then i start thinking about random stuff and can't go back to sleep. I am in midlife, Definitely having some stress in my life. Exercising three times a week, trying to eat healthier, cut out my glass of red wine at dinner because I read a while back that if you have alcohol after 6pm can cause sleep problems if you are prone to them and limit my coffee/ caffeine to 2 cup before 10am (no other caffeine intake during the day). Room is generally at a decent temperature 68 or sl below. Try to keep my sleep/ wake times consistent. for a while my child was finding way into our bed at night and I thought that might be the culprit she has cut down on that but I don't find it making a difference. I am told its just happens when you get older but doesn't seem like that answer should be so easy and i have to put up with that. Any thoughts? Any helpful hints?

What can I do next?

You melatonin levels change as you get older which contributes to having trouble sleeping. I had the same issue you are having and when I started taking melatonin before bed I found I was able to go to sleep and stay asleep. As far as the hot flashes you might try dressing lightly and having layers of blankets on the bed so you can pull off a blanket or two if you are hot.

Try prayer or meditation when you wake up. You may have to practice during daylight hours to learn how to bring yourself back to a calm state of mind. My husband prays a rosary, I start a story in my mind that continues into dreamland. Once you get accustom to it, it becomes second nature and you may not even realize you have woken up.

But about waking up hot, you may be perimenipausal. Talk to your doctor and have your hormone levels checked. There are lots of remedies (both prescription and natural) to relieve symptoms.

Have you been to your DR to have a blood workup?

I've never been through menapause naturally but you are describing part os pre-menapause. I had a complete hysterectomy about 12 yrs ago and it was the best thing I ever did... I had my ovaries removed as well so I have been on HRT patch ever since and I've had no issues whatsoever.

That said, my best friend had a hysterectomy the same year I did and she did not opt to remove ovaries. She is now having hot flashes, waking at night, etc.

You might check with your Dr and get tested to see if you are in pre menapause. Do you have the sweats at other times during the day? I am sure stress has a lot to do with it as well.

I hope you find the source and get some relief soon!

It sounds like peri-menapause. Try taking some Black Cohash and Soy Isoflavins daily.

A glass of wind with dinner should not interfer with sleep.

Hate to say it, but it does happen with age. I often go on line during night when I cannot sleep and find all my "old" lol friends on too.

How frustrating!

If your husband can stand it, put a fan on at night time. It will keep you cooler and it will also have that natural white noise effect that may be able to lull you to sleep. It works good for me, as I deal with terrible insomnia, and do get days of hot flash type nights.

Also, are you drinking enough water? Drink a glass of cool water before you go to bed each night and see if that helps too. Taking a good multi-vitamin?

Visit your doctor and get a work up going. You may have something more going on. They can lead you in the right direction.

You might just have a vitamin deficiency, insomnia, or even be pre-menopausal or in. There are many things it could be but you wont know for sure til you get a work up.

As for the stress which IS a big part of this I bet, it happens to all of us. Start doing something just for you. Go for a walk, start a new exercise routine, go get a pedicure, something that is relaxing to you. Got to take care of you.

Best wishes

I really think it does come with age. I too have night sweats and sometimes wake up completely soaked. I keep two towels within reach. One to dry off and lay underneath me and another to put on top of me. That way the towel absorb the sweat and I am more comfortable and can get back to sleep.

I also take one unisome tablet nightly. It doesn't knock me out, but when I do wake up, it allows me to get right back to sleep. Also, there is no groggy feeling in the morning.

You are having night sweats. Have you had a blood test to check your hormones? Have your gyn do that. If you are still having a period, you are probably going through peri-menopause. I have suffered with the night sweats, waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to get back to sleep, and daytime hot flashes. You're lucky if you don't get the daytime hot flashes.

Please work with the doctor to get you some help. I am in full menopause now and take hormone replacement therapy, and I'm doing better.

I've had night sweats in the last few months too. Saw the doctor on Tuesday, and she said it could be hormones (although it would be early, it is not unheard of for a 43 yo to start menopause), a blood sugar thing (I have diabetes in my family history), or a thyroid thing. So they took blood to try to figure out what it might be. I haven't heard the results yet.

In any case, my recommendation would be to see your doctor and they can help you figure out what is going on.
