you could use Lansinoh. That stuff you put on cracked nipples. If it can go on the nipple, which goes in the mouth, then it should be fine to put on baby's cracked lips. I used it on my son as well as my own lips.

I would call your doctor and check on this since he is so young. They can tell give you some guidelines on what you can put on them as far as chapstick goes or if there is something in your kitchen cabinet you could use. Congrats on your new baby !
If you are breastfeeding let me suggest Lansonal cream. It is safe to use on your breast to help nipples not dry out and crack. It is safe for baby to nurse right after putting it on and I use it on my families lips. It is sooooo much better than chapstick or any other lip balm. use that on you and baby!!! A. (mom of 3 and BF all 3)
I second Lansinoh, just put some on your nipples and it will help baby's lips as well.
Congratulations!
Congrats on your new addition! Two of my babies were winter babies and had really chapped lips. I think it hurts us more than it bothers them. Just leave it go and it will heal within a few days. If I doesn't heal call the Dr. and see what they recommend.
sure. vaseline is great - just don't use anything with color or perfume.
The same lanolin that you put on your breasts for nursing is safe for baby and should be good to restore moisture back to baby's lips. Lansinoh HPA Lanolin and Medela Tender Care Lanolin are great products. Both can be found at Target or Walmart. But if you look through the stuff from the hospital, there may be some samples in your bag from the lactation consultants. My babies are 1 and 3 and I use my leftover on them when needed, casue I know it is safe. Good Luck.
It is normal for a newborn to have dry/cracked skin - we were advised not to put any lotion on it (my fella's feet were dry and cracked) b/c the broken skin would allow direct access to the blood stream. It went away within several days.
Congratulations! I've seed lots of new babies whose skin hasn't adjusted to life outside the womb. It may not be particularly uncomfortable for your little boy to lose that initial skin as it is gradually replaced by a more durable and resistant layer underneath. If it's an ongoing problem, I hope you'll check with your advice nurse before putting anything on his mouth, where he'd possibly swallow some of it.
Hi R.! I would NEVER put vaseline on a baby's lips. Are you breastfeeding? After each feeding you could smear a little breastmilk on his lips. It is normal for the peeling to happen, so you could just wait and see if it resolves in a couple of days.
One thing you could do is take a tiny bit of olive oil and rub it onto his lip.
Congratulations on your very new baby! :) I hope you are getting good sleep and have a lovely time getting to know your new little one!
Congratulations R.! It's perfectly fine to use some Vaseline on his lips if they are dry. You may also want to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids and that he has plenty of wet diapers.
I know they make baby chapstick. I think it is made by burt's bees. I'm sure you could google it. Vaseline also works wonders. Just to be sure I would call the pediatrician and ask.
Because your baby is large (mine was big, not this big) you want to be sure he's being well fed. Dry lips can be a sign of dehydration. Are you breastfeeding? Make sure that's going smoothly and baby's getting enough nourishment. Does he cry more than what you were expecting? It's so hard if you're a first time mom and don't know what to expect. We all expect babies to cry, so it's hard to gauge when it's excessive. You'll have a check up soon and they'll be able to tell you if your baby has gained or lost weight. Diapers should be soaked and frequent (I forget the number of times/day since it was a long time ago for me.)
use vaseline or aqauphor. Both are safe for newborns.
Lightly dabbing on Vaseline (or petroleum jelly) should be fine. They put it over their eyelids when they are born and it is safe to use. I would not use anything out of a tube though (Chapstick, etc.) without checking with a doctor. Vaseline is just a safe standard moisturizer, but make sure you use it from a jar that is NOT used for diaper moisturizing so you know it is not accidently contaminated.
use aquaphor - tyhats what i was given at the hospital or nursing ointment - it is gentle enough for you and your litte one who nurses on you
