Hi. My 6 month old daughter does this weird thing were she shakes her head from left to right...kinda like shaking your head "no"...but it's really fast and so odd. She does it when she puts her head down on my chest or when she is on her tummy - she puts her face straight down and shakes it. She looks like she has an itchy nose, but I know that's not it. :) She seems happy when she does it, not crying or anything. Has anyone seen this?? I can't figure out why she does it or if it means something.
My little one Ryan did that too. It started even sooner than that though. It never bothered him. It was like watching a cat find it's most comfortable spot. For the most part it just gave him rosey cheeks. Some times he still does it when he is really tired.

Hi! Well, either it's a common, normal behavior, or....my kids are weird too because they did the same thing at that age!!! Don't worry! They go thru some funny stages! It's temporary!

My 7-month-old daughter does it, too. I think she's imitating us, because we shake our heads when we play with her. It's a playful thing - she's usually grinning, and it's adorable! There are other times she does it when she's sleepy. She'll rub her face on my chest or in a blanket. That's probably a comfort thing, I think. I doubt it's any more significant than that.

Hi Shay,
I really don't see anything to worry about. My son is two and he loves to shake his head. I think they get a natural thrill out of it. If you do it, you will feel kind of dizzy and wobbly, and the kids like that cause it's fun. My son will just stand there and he'll just start shaking his head and laughing...he's having the greatest time! LOL Just make sure she's not around anything sharp, or near a table where she will fall and get hurt. Not to worry. OK? :-) G.

My son did this for a while whenever I tried to nurse and then later when I would try to give a bottle it was weird. I just passed it off as him being well my kid. The doctor never said anything about it so I never worried. Maybe if you are considered it may be something just bring it up next time she goes to the doctor.

My daughter did the very same thing. It's fine, I asked my doctor. All you have to worry about is carpet burn. She'll stop one day.

Hi Shay,
I have a 6 month old son and he started doing the head shaking thing a couple of weeks ago. I think he realized he can do it and it feels funny so he does it all the time! He gets a kick out of it. Babies learn they can do something new and tend to do it over and over and over again.
Mama of another weirdo :)

My daughter does the same thing. She started at about 6 months and is now 10 months and still doing it. It's pretty funny and she seems to get a kick out of it. Now that she is older she is using it more as a "no" sign. I thought she had an itchy nose. But do it yourself; it's kind of funny. I think they like the sensation. Or maybe they are both little weirdos!!

I remember one of my three girls doing something similar to that and there wasn't anything wrong with her. I just think that it was her way of snuggling or getting into a good position? She outgrew it and I never thought about it again until I read your message. Maybe this was something they did in our tummies.

It may be that she sees you react to this so she keeps doing it, my 7 month old does this thing that looking like she is shivering and she just thinks it's funny.

Both of my children did the same thing when they were smaller. It seems to me they just figure out they can do these silly little things and they are so proud that they do them all the time. My son is just over a year old now and he's graduated from the fast shaking when his head is on my chest to walking around shaking his head no when we tell him something. Or he'll just shake his head really hard to stay awake.
I think it's safe to say that it's pretty normal. All kids do really weird stuff!

my daughter has done that since she was 8 months old.
her doctor sent her to see a specialist
for it believe it or not.
they said it just one of the many ways
babys choose to express themselves
just because we dont seem tu understand it
doesnt make it a bad thing.
my daughter eventually grew out of it
shes 2 now and forgot she used to do it
untill i read your bulletin
sooooo no worries and good luck

You know, my kiddo used to do it a lot too. I never figured out why, but she did eventually quit doing it. She did it alot when she would be crawling around on the floor.... Maybe they just like the dizzy feeling they get when they do that? LOL

My daughter, who is now almost 4, does this as well. She does it when she is sleepy and doesn't want to go to sleep. It keeps her awake. I wouldn't worry about it unless she is fussing or crying when she does it. :o)

Hi Shay- sometimes kids will do that if they have an ear infection- it makes them feel better as it will move fluid and offer a momentary relief. Good news is that like 92% of all ear infections in kids resolve on their own. Some kids will even hit the side of their head or bang their head on a wall too-

I have seen that before. My son did that a little bit. I have also read articles about it and there is nothing wrong. It is just something that comforts them. Babycenter.com has some articles on the subject and they are kind of interesting if you want to check it out. My son did grow out of it. He only shakes his head no now.

I would not worry about it. I have a 10 month old and over the past few months she did the same thing, but she would laugh after she stopped. I don't know if it would make her a little dizzy and she liked the feeling or what. But she has stopped doing it. I thought it was a little crazy at first, but it was nothing to be concerned about.

Don't worry all kids are weird. She will do many things that don't make sense to you but she is just learning. My sons used to hit there head on stuff it never hurt them but it freaked me out. I kinda had to just relized as long as they are not hurting themselves or others you just gotta let them go. At least you will have good stories to tell when they are teenagers.

My daughter does that when she gets tired. Your daughter is at an age when they experiment with different textures, so she probably just likes the way it feels.
