Good Morning Moms,
My 15 year old daughter sustained a concussion on the Soccer field this past May...she was cleared by her doctor in September. She then received a 2nd concussion in school one week ago exactly 6 months after the first one. This one was due to an accident at school. She has been seen by a Dr., had received a Brain Scan and there is no swelling of the brain...than God. My question is has anyone had a child who has had multiple concussions? How long before you noticed full recovery and have you noticed any long term effects that you as a mom are aware of? Thanks,

Sincerely, N.

What can I do next?

I can personally say, no long term effects.

I used to play on an all boys hockey team and everyone was a LOT bigger than I am ;)

N., if I were you, I'd research the new findings about concussions that the medical community has been working on with football programs in middle and high schools. I can't remember what all I read, but I do think it has to do with your situation.

I'm sorry your daughter has gone through this.

I had one concussion when I was a kid and was in the hospital for days. I have no long term effects, but I question my short term memory (I have no solid proof). I am not really sure about having two in such a short time period. I would suggest that she be extremely careful for a while and talk to the doctor about continuing to play sports. I know (being a hockey fan) that if a person gets too many it can cause long term damage.

If you do not aready have one, I STRONGLY recommend having your daughter wear a head guard during soccer games to prevent new concussions. Several girls on my daughter's team wear them as a pre-caution because of too many reports of concussions in girls soccer in our area.

One other mom has mentioned the research that has been done on concussions. There is no way of knowing the long term effects. You have to decide what is important here. Some parents push their kids too hard to be in sports where later in life they are paying for it. Eg knee replacements or arthritis) Personally my kids long term health is the most important thing to me. You need to read up on these findings and then decide what is best for her.

My son had a car accident early in his senior year (just before his 17th birthday). He sustained a concussion and had the classic symptoms for a few days...headache, some dizziness, and was tired but otherwise was fine. It was soccer season and he didn't want to miss the time he was initially told to take off. He made an appointment to see his doctor early. Doctor evaluated him a week later (rather than two) and cleared him to resume normal activites but NO headers. Two days later, he's in a game and heads a ball that was kicked by our goalie (this goalie can kick from one end of the field to the other). Of all people to hit a header from, not the best one to pick but he was fine (as ALL the parents gasped in the bleachers). Almost exactly a year later, while away at college, there was an incident w/ his roommate and he ended up with another concussion. Ironically, he was sick at the same time so he was miserable. He had symptoms off and one for a few weeks and then when he went back to wrestling practice they took him back out until he was evaluated by his doctor. Was out for a month until another evaluation by a specialist who was finally able to clear him. She gave him info on concussions and he realized how serious they are and how he is now more prone to them.

I sustained a concussion when I was 16 due to a car accident. Exactly 6 months to the day after my first accident, I was in a second accident. (Neither were my fault...and the second accident occurred the second time I had driven after the first accident.) I didn't notice any effects at the time.

Three weeks ago (give or take) I sustained a severe concussion when my head slammed against the concrete from a fall. I was diagnosed (two days later) with post concussion syndrome. I'm now having issues with short term memory. In addition, I get nauseous for no reason. Keep an eye out to see if she starts having memory issues, balance issues or unexplained nausea/vomiting.

I also agree with the other mom to have her wear a head guard while playing soccer to prevent any further issues.

I suffered two concussions as a kid, although years apart at age 4 and again at age 15. No long term effects that I know of (although my kids might disagree..........). I would just keep a close eye on her and have her be very careful about wearing bike helmets, etc. Good luck.

Oldest son likely had a concussion playing neighboorhood football ... idjits at the hospital - let's not go there ... Anyway, what got mom's attention (I was at work, then heading home) was he kept repeating questiions ....

I think he still does some of that even today - pushing 10+ years later, but probably can't proof it due to stupid idjit ....

Hi N.
My daughter fell off her bike and suffered a head injury. Her helmet broke as well. I took her to a doctor who did cranial manipulation to get the bones along the sutures back into place. She had headaches which went away due to the treatment. She had previously fallen off a horse and hurt her skull and her thumb.
She had also had a couple of soccer field accidents a few years later, one of which damaged her knee.
She's a mother herself now. The head injuries are really healed but her knee even with surgury isn't that good. It's been treated and retreated without much success.
I strongly recommend you find someone who is certified in Cranial Manipulation. Your daughter will be happy with the results.
