Well, I got the mirena put in 6 weeks after my son was born, I have now had it for two weeks, What I am asking, is if anyone out there has gotten pregnant on it, or if it really works. I had heard all this great stuff about it, and then as soon as I got it, I have been hearing some things, I would have rather not known. Is there anyone out there that knows a thing or two about the mirena???

What can I do next?

Hello!
My one year old is an "IUD Baby". The pill didn't work for me (my five and six year olds are testaments to that), and I thought IUD was the way to go ... it worked for three years, and was in place just fine when my little 'un started growing. After some initial freakouts that it was a tubal pregnancy, an OB removed it and I had a normal, healthy nine months (with a very funny ultrasound picture of the insert hanging out near the tiny fetus).
I agree that there are horror stories attached to EVERYTHING involving kids (there's been billions born, one or two stories for each, right?), but I still advocate IUDs (Mirena and copper)because of the practicality. They do fail (I heard plenty of stories while my son was growing, IUDs coming out with the kid, before the kid, (loosely) attached to the placenta), but it's not worth losing sleep over. Just keep up with your yearly exams, and you'll be set!

I have a regular copper IUD, and so far..so good. I was on the depo shot for years before, and coming off the hormones from that has been terrible on me. I had my first period the other day, and I do have to say the cramps are far worse than when I had a normal period without it. I heard that is why they developed the IUD you have, to lessen the pain. I worry about getting pregnat also, but I heard that most pregnancies happen within the first year you have it. When I got mine they made me come in for a checkup one month later to make sure it was in ok.

My advice, is that everyone is different. Many other people may have problems with it but you may not. There are horror stories out there for everything. Remember being pregnat? I'm sure you heard many. If you are that concerned about it, make a doctor appt and discuss other options and see what is best for you. I chose it because I am over thirty and don't plan on having any more children, and opted out of surgery for now. Good luck!

I had mine put in 8weeks after my son was born and it's been great. The first month was tough because when it was about 1 month after I had gotten it, I started getting really bad cramps and I was lightly bleeding off and on for about one month as well, but soon after that month was over, I was period free, cramp free and I've been lovin' it. My son is 8 months now and I have not even seen a drop of blood since the beginning. Every woman will take it a little bit differently, it's just about how your body will react. good luck

I'm not trying too make things worse for you but, I've heard that IUD's can actually cause infertility. I only know this because I was thinking about getting one and I spoke to a friend of mine who's a nurse and she told me if I plan on having more children to not get it because of that reason. So I actually decided not to get the IUD just for that reason. My sister also told me that one of her friends did end up getting pregnant while she had one and you can't take those out after you get pregnant so the kid ended up with it plastered to his forehead I guess. Now I don't know how true that second part is but, I know I wouldn't get it just because I know I want to have more than just one child. Besides there are other kinds of birth control that work just as well if used properly.

Did you do any research on the Mirena IUD before you got it done? I know some people have had them, gotten them removed and were still able to have kids. But there is that chance that it could cause infertility.

I had the mirena for 2 years, no pregnancy (took it out when I wanted to get pregnant). I had no problems with it, a few scares when the periods started going away, but that's it. There are some women that it works with adversely, and like all forms of BC, it is not 100%, so pregnancy can happen. On another forum I hang on, a girl got pregnant after having the Mirena in, but it had fallen out and she didn't know. Be sure to check the strings monthly, and if you can't find them, do not be afraid to "bug" your doctor. That's what he is paid for. :)

My sister-in-law got the Mirena last July and is having no problems other than being irregular on her menstrual cycle. It says in the brochure that this is a common side effect. I just got it in February, just had my one-month checkup. So far I'm still bleeding, but that could also be from my pregnancy, since I had endometriosis. Who knows. Anyway, I'm finding this interesting to read, too.

Hello C., I had the Mirena IUD put in in 2005. I am one of those unsatisfied people with it but its the only birth control left for me to take (Ive tried all the others and had a different problem with each - got pregnant on the pill, the patch falls off when having sex, and the Nuva Ring Im too small for, and the shots...hell no.) So I got the Mirena. I used to have regular periods and such but since I got Mirena I have severe cramping and periods that last 2-3 weeks! They say after the first 6 months that your periods go away but not with me! (Im actually on my second week of a period right now) I know everyone is different and a lot of people like the Mirena. I guess its just how you feel about it and what effects it has on you and what you can put up with. Good luck and I hope things work out for you with the Mirena or whatever birth control you may choose!

Hi C.,
I debated about getting an IUD for awhile. Until my girlfriend told me about the copper IUD. It does not produce hormones in the body and is one of the most natural ways to go regarding Birht controll. I would ask your doctor about it. I got mine at Planned Parenthood. I have not got pregnant and I've had it for almost 4 1/2 years. I would advise staying away from Birth controll that produces more hormones in the body, they can really put the body out of wack. So good luck!

Hi C.,

I've had the Merina since December and have had no problems. My periods are normal (although it seems they come a little earlier than usual, but not any heavier) and no cramping or very light cramping during my period. I love not having to take a pill every day. And since going off of the pill and switching to the Merina, I've lost weight a lot easier then before. I love it!
