Hi ladies! I am in need of some desperate help here. I am trying so hard to lose the baby weight I have accumulated these last 4 years and the weight does not seem to want to budge. I have tried just about everything. I have my family on low-fat, low cholesterol, heart healthy foods. I watch the amount I eat, when I eat, etc. I exercise, not everyday. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What "secrets" worked for all of you? Thanks so much ladies!

Thank you everyone for the wonderful feedback. I went to Goodwill and bought a Pilates tape and will try that in the morning before the boys wake up. I am with you! I have lost weight between my kids, but now that I have all that I am going to, I'm having a harder time. When I was the most successful, I kept a food diary including the number of calories. I also was careful to read labels and forgo foods that had 'partially, or fully hydrogenated' anything. Believe me, it is in a lot! This is also known as 'Trans Fat' but you have to read the ingredients because they are allowed to say 'no trans fat' if there is less than 2g/serving (The most you should have per DAY is 2g) This is also important for heart health. Get a buddy to do exercise to keep each other on schedule, or take the kids on a long walk each evening. I wish you well and will be working right along side of you!

Hi K.!

I hope I can be of some help to you. I am 44, married 16 years and have 4 children (twins were born when I was 39. At age 40 I discovered Arbonne International and their protein and fiber shakes (no soy). They really helped when I was trying to eat better while taking care of busy babies. All their nutrition really works and is made with only safe, pure ingredients. Maybe you have heard of them. Anyway, the other thing I wanted to share with you that I also do now is T-Tapp. I recently discovered this through a friend and since I was not exercising through all those years of having babies, my muscles were not very strong and I could not get myself to do much. You can research this rehabilitative workout (no jumping or weights) at T-Tapp.com. If you get the book first, there is a coupon in it to send in and save 30% on the dvds. I have tried everything and this really impressed me. Check out all the before and after stories!

If you would like more info on the nutrition from Arbonne (everything is made from whole foods and is formulated to work). My favorite is the detox tea (tastes good) and cleans the liver, blood and kidneys. Everything is Vegan and has no fillers or sugars. You can check out my web site at http://glowingheadtotoe.myarbonne.com. If you like what you see and have questions, I can email you an ingredient list and other info that tells you more and why it is so different from the rest and why it works better than anything else on the market. Sounds like a sales pitch doesn't it? Well, I am excited to share this because I have used their products for five years now and have built a successful business just sharing these products with people just like you who are looking for results and have had it with everything you tried. You can sign up as a client and buy retail or you can get in touch with me and get a $29 membership with Arbonne and receive 35% off all year and save even 50 to 80% depending on your order. Check out their whole line of weight loss (but I would definitely start with the fiber shake and maybe the colon cleanse).

I grew up near Detroit and live in northern Michigan now. And we have something in common -- I just learned to sew recently myself. Lots of sewers up here, although I am not sure I will go gang busters with it. Hope to teach my girls so they can do more than I did when I was younger. What have you made so far? I've done about three aprons -- don't wear them so they will end up as gifts. Need to finish skirts for the girls.

Take care of those busy boys -- I loved having boys! You still have time for that girl. If I can do twins at 39, anyone can do it. Hope to hear from you and find out what you think of Arbonne and T-Tapp.

Sometimes I don't even look at the MamaSource because I feel like I could help so many people but don't have all the time to sit and email notes like this. I just felt I needed to respond to you.

Take care,

L. O

Hi K.,
The only advice I could give is what I have done to take the weight off. Do you drink pop? If so cut that way back, I read that you put your family on low everything, that's good but try to eat 6 small meals a day. I have also done the firm, it is at Target and that really kicks my butt. Plus I try to walk everyday. I hope that I helped this is the first time that I'm responding to someone. I also have a 2yr old boy and a boy that just turned 5.

Hello K.,

The only thing would stress to you is to make sure you do not cut to many calories from your diet. If you do you will gain weight because of your body afraid of starvation mode.

When you exercise, do weights and a cardio routine. Remember muscle will burn more fat. Big thing is muscle weighs more then fat!

A food diary also helps. If you have to write it, you usually choose healthier snacks and meals.

I still have the weight battle. But I will overcome the weight one of these days. Hopefully soon.

Plus set yourself small obtainable goals to reach your ultimate goal. It is safe to lose 1 to 2 lbs a week.

Hi K.---Good luck with your weight loss adventure. I am a wellness educator with a degree in Home Economics. What I have been learning lately is pretty simple advice. I think the most important thing is to NOT design your diet to EXCLUDE food. If you plan your diet around foods that will make and keep you healthy, you should be just fine. Those include lots of fresh fruits and vegggie, whole grains and legumes. Avoid dairy and use animal products sparingly, like a condiment. Choose a variety of veggies, getting a sample of the colors of the rainbow. And choose foods high in fiber. You simply cannot eat too much if you are eating enough fiber, a minimum of 24g per day. Again, choosing the listed food groups will help achieve this goal.

I agree with others who have suggested smaller, more frequent meals. If we eat too many calories in one sitting, our bodies WILL put the excess into storage. The soda pop and even fruit juices to a smaller extent to contribute to excess weight. Studies show that, all things being equal, one can of pop a day will add 15 pounds in a year. And diet drinks are not the answer. Besides the fact that artifical sweeteners are neurotoxins, studies show that people tend to eat more when they consume artificially sweetened foods. I can explain how that works, if you would like to contact me.

And exercise is a must. You can achieve faster weight loss by either increasing the frequency or intensity of your exercise. The experts I work with say that you need about 90 minutes of exercise most days to achieve weight loss. Once our bodies have stored those excess calories, they do not want to let go of them.

As part of my business, I offer in-home wellness presentations for you and your friends and family at no cost to you. I love what I do, helping people to be healthier. Feel free to give me a call. I would be happy to share my resources with you. In health, D. www.dianeshealthed.com

Hi! I was having the same problems up till recently. I started keeping a food diary and really looking at what I ate. To my surprise I wasn't eating as good as I thought. So I really got motivated. I'm down 20 pounds. I eat healthy but give in to my cravings. I stopped eating the condiments that had added calories & switched to Weight Watchers products (can be pricy). I workout 45-60 minutes 4-7 times a week, I either run intervals on the treadmil, do an elliptical or the stairmaster. In Walled Lake they have a very reasonable gym with cheap childcare called Balance. If you'd like more tips or a motivational partner message me :) It takes lots of hard work and the results will be small at first. Good luck!!!

Hi I just switched over from the Biggest Loser Club online to sparkpeople. Like Tricia said it is a great site and it is free. The guy that started it had a site like ebay and he sold it to ebay for quite a lot of money and he wanted to do something nice for others in return. It is great that you can do it from home at your own convienence. It can't hurt to try since it is free. There is a lot of information if you need any help you can email me. I have found a great support group from the other site and we all switched over to this one together. They have people of all sizes on there from all over the place. I hope you check it out.

I'm a firm believer in the "Eat right for your blood type" book. Check it out. It is really interesting and explains how some can lose weight by low-fat while others do it with low-carb. Personally I am O- blood. Which is the oldest type of blood so I should eat like the hunter-gathers ate.. which means lots of meat, dark green veggies, no grains or dairy. I tried low-fat for years and ended up gaining weight but once I did low-carb (I do a healthy version, not sit around and eat a lb of bacon and hot dogs a day..lol) I ended up losing 50lbs in 6 weeks. I ate a ton of salads, did a protein shake every am, drank lots of H2O and worked out (cardio and weights) 3xs a week. Yes its true if you go back to eating high carbs you gain it all back but if you add in a few carbs after you hit your goal and make them high fiber choices then you wont gain the weight back.
Check out the book. Its helps with weight loss, and putting your body back into balance.. I have seen quite a few people get off medications, lower high cholesterol, lose weight and get healthy with that book. Theres even a "Cook right for your blood type" book with all the recipes too.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I agree with some of the other responses. Weight Watchers is the best. I joined after my daugher was born 7 yrs ago and lost 18lbs in 12 weeks. It take some dedication to track your points, and you have make sure you are exercising. Depending on the shape you are in you need to exercise a minimum of 45 min 4 times a week to being to see a change in your weight. I also agree with some of the responses that weight training is also important.

If you don't like walking/running (I don't) try to Power 90 work out dvd's. They are a great 90 day boot camp to get you up and moving.

Losing weight is difficult - try to keep a positive attitude about it, you will see results!
Good Luck!

Hi K.!

I've been peeling off the weight in the last month by following Michael Thurmond's plan. It's eating for your body type. I eat low carb/low fat and I feel sooooooo good! I started at 5'8" and 230 pounds. I just turned 38 and have 4 & 6 year old boys. I've taken off 18 pounds since June 9! When I'm hungry, I eat. I generally have chicken, turkey and fish, any green veggie and berries and peaches. Each body type is different in what foods are in the diet but the biggest advice is to eat small meals 6 times/day making sure you have protein with each small meal. It really gets your metabolism going! AND - I haven't exercised that much other than playing in the yard with my kids and maybe one walk/week. I'd like to up the exercise but I now feel so much better just with cutting the carbs and sugar out of my system!

You can find his plan online by googling his name. I bought a kit on ebay for 1/2 the cost.

Good luck! You go girl!

Small changes really helps. Stop eating after a certain time every day really helps this is to allow the body to digest properly before bedtime. You should feel a little hunger feeling around bedtime. I try to be finished eating around 6 p.m. Try to exercise everyday. Walk 10 min. here & there throughout the day. Stay away from pop & processed sugar. Have your thyroid checked to see if that the cause as to why you can't lose like you want. You could talk to a nutritionist. I know weight loss works best for me when I'm not home all day long. During college semesters the lbs come right off. I hope these ideas help. Best of luck to you.

You must add in cardio workouts and weight training. One day do aerobics the next day try pilates and the next kickboxing and then walking. Have one day be an intense workout and then the next be low key like biking and walking. For awhile you should exercise everyday for about 30 minutes.

Dear K. P.,

I would check into www.weighdown.com. It has many great in-depth Bible studies that teach you how to only eat when your stomach growls, and only small amounts. You still feel satisfied and everything tastes much better when you are actually hungry. You don't eat no fat and low fat foods unless it is simply what you prefer. You also spend less money on groceries because you eat less. Works great. Many of the people who have used these Bible studies have been on t.v. shows and in magazines because of the fact that they lost weight and have kept it off for several years without using any drugs or buying special foods.

Pray about it first and do as God directs you.

Even people in wheel chairs all the time have lost ALL their excess weight and kept it off permanently as long as they continue to eat the way they learn to do.

It also requires absolutely no exercise and still works!

How about simple mathematics? Track the calories you take in and then the calories you burn each day. I know there are some websites out there that will help you. If you are tempted by something bad, maybe the job of having to figure out the calories will deter you!

Also, Body for Life is a good book. While I am no health poster child, when I was attempting this program, it made a lot of sense (eating more protein, smaller meals, and pushing yourself when you work out).

About 12 weeks ago I decided to make a very concentrated effort at loosing weight. I did several things - and have lost almost 20 pounds. Here's what I did:

1) Joined Weight Watchers. I've been following the plan - counting every point - but getting to eat what I want, when I want to, and making decisions about how bad I want those sweets. Part of this is watching those tastes, licks & bites - the taste test of the meal you are cooking, licks of the spoon and bites to finish the kids plates. They add up.

2)Excercise more. I joined a gym, started going three days a week for about 30 minutes each day. I'm now up to 1 hour each day of pure cardio. For weight I started turning play time into excercise time. My daughters love to lay on my calves while I do leg lifts and tummy crunches. Great weight and great fun. I also park far away from doors for the extra walk.

3) Foods. My husband has begun avoiding packaged vegetables, fruits and boxed meals or sides. All of our vegetables & fruits are fresh, or at minimum frozen. Boxed meals and sides are loaded with things you don't think about - even if they seem good for you. We also switched to whole grain. I aim for 2 protein a day, 4-5 vegetables/fruits, 2 dairy, 2 whole grain and 2 healthy oils. I also drink a minimum of 40 oz. of water - 32 oz. before I allow myself a diet pop.

All that together seems to be helping. If you want to look at Weight Watchers the web address is: www.weightwatchers.com. Hope this helps!! Good Luck.

Hello K..
Since January I have lost 55 pounds. I joined Ladies Workout Express in Canton and I go 3-4 times a week. {They currently have a special only $49 to join and $9.95 a month thereafter, and they have childcare at a small additional cost} If you ask me, circuit training is the easy way to exercise! I love it. But even more important than that was I joined a FREE website called SparkPeople.com. It has such great tools for weight loss. Their Food tracker is excellent, and I am telling, this is the way to go. When I started I thought, oh I'm eating more fruit & veggies & cutting down on my portion sizes, so I'm eating healthy...let me tell you, by tracking your food on this program you see how much calories, fat g, carbs, etc. that you are eating, and it will surprise you to se how much you are actually eating! Their "spark diet" is just based on couting calories (but its easy with their Food tracker, you don't have to actually count yourself) but by doing that for a period of 12 weeks I was able to teach myself what size portions equal a certain amount of calories. It's just great and I recommend it to anyone. There are also other great features of the website. The best part is its FREE. Give it a try. Oh, and if you join, write that you were referred by member CASSIEKH. :-) Good luck!

I know do it at home with a couple dvd's that I have picked up. Also watch the low fat stuff, there have been a bunch of studies that show that artificial sugars actually make your body hold on to the fat longer then things made with regular sugar.

Hi K. -

I had 3 babies in 3 1/2 years and man-o-man did it take it's toll - all bikini photoshoots are permanently on hold ;) - so I feel your pain. I would love a super quick fix too, but every trusted professional (and friend) reassures me that the way to go is positive changes in diet and exercise and slow and steady weight loss over time. I know, it's not magic, but it pays off in the long run. What I decided to do what enlist the help of friends and associates and get them to sponsor my weight loss. I always do better when I have someone to hold me accountable and this way makes it harder to cheat when I've got people checking up on me. Also, everything that they sponsor goes to charity so I am super motivated to reach my goal! I made a chart and am asking people to pledge each pound I lose. They can pledge either a donation to the charity or they can donate goods or services that might help out. One I lose the pound they pledged, I can collect the donation and they can get a receipt for a tax write off from Rocco's Heart. I have very personal ties to "Rocco's Heart-an HLHS foundation", so that is where my donations are going. So far so good, but it's still pretty new. Send me an email if you're interested in the forms I'm using or if you want to buddy up (it's ____@____.com ). Another great tip was to keep a food journal. Keep track of everything you eat and try to track your times and portions as well. Small portions of healthy food throughout the day are better than one or two great big meals. Good luck to you! You can do it!!

Hi K.,

You're a busy mom, so whatever you do has to fit into your lifestyle. Getting to a gym may be next to impossible for you. I do believe you have to move your body to get great results. Try to include the boys in some outdoor activities that will get you moving! Biking, soccer, tag,etc... If you do have the blessed opportunity to exercise on your own, do something you enjoy and it will be something you look forward to, a weekly walk with a friend, bike ride, or tennis game.
I believe in making small changes one step at a time. Don't go hog-wild and change your eating and exercising in a day. You'll get overwhelmed quickly. Make a small change and build from there. Cut your portion sizes, drink more water, eat whole grains, fruits and veggies. Cut out snack foods wherever possible, but don't deny yourself of anything. It makes the urge that much stronger. Focus on INCLUDING better foods, not excluding bad ones. When you start to see results, you will not want to put the bad ones in anymore!
Most importantly, read as much as you can on healthy living. There are tons of books to inspire and educate you on the topic of better living. It is much easier to make a life change when we have the facts in front of us!
If you still don't see results after making some major changes, be sure to see your doc. You could have a thyroid imbalance or a sugar problem that's making you weight loss resistant. Give yourself time. Your youngest is only 2, your body is still adjusting, believe it or not!
Take care, and I wish you the best in your health success. You can do it!!
Many blessings,
J.

Check out www.mibootcamps.com. I finished my first camp. The camp is in four week increments. It is all women, and M-F from 5:30 am-6:30 am. I could get up and get my work out before my kids got up. I was not the most fit, but this program has helped me tremendously in many aspects of my life. It is tailored for women for all shapes and sizes and fitness levels. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Well you are smart enough to know that eating healthy foods is half the battle. A word of caution, low fat foods can mean high in sugar and/or sodium. Also, after 30 our metabolisms slow down.

Most "diets" help people to loose weight and then it is hard to maintain the weight. The program I have, reduces cravings, increases energy, and retains muscle mass. Loosing fat is important, but repairing/retaining muscle is even more important. Did you know that the body burns 2 calories for every pound of fat, but burns 50 calories for every pound of muscle? Lean muscle increases the metabolism naturally.

My weight never changes. I got pregnant twice and I had a few months after delivery where exercise could have made a difference, but I didn't and each time I had a baby it added at least 30lbs. Nothing I can do now will change it.

I cut out most of the carbs in my life. I don't eat white anything. I eat whole foods. I fill 3/4 of my plate with veggies, 1/2 of it is tossed salad twice a day. I work out every morning and it works... so excercise regularly and eat properly... the only secret I know that works :)

Btw... I was 199 when I delivered my daughter, when I took her home I was a size 18 and I am a size 8 heading to a 6 now at 138 lbs :) I am almost 5'2"

This is not a specific diet like say the South Beach Diet or anything but I did not still do eat tons of veggies, 3 big salads a week, always make sure veggies are at least 1/2 of your meal. Eat very minimal meat and bread. Make dishes like brown rice and seasoned veggie you can do many different versions with different veggies and seasonings, add a little butter and salt, and it's delicious.
Make sure you drink lots of water and stay away from junk food and take a brisk walk at least 30-60min every day.
I could never take the time or the mental energy to count points etc.. that would drive me crazy and I would feel like I was on a diet. What you need to do is change your lifestyle, if you don't and you just diet, when you are done with your diet and at the weight you want to be at you go back to your old habits and gain the weight right back. A lifestyle change is what you really need to do. That is what I did and it's stuck because there is no "end" to my "diet".
It sounds simple, but that is exactly what I did and I lost all of my baby weight plus about 15 more pounds from what I weighed before I got pregnant. I was 145, gained 22 pounds when was pregnant and now I weigh 130. So it worked and you don't have to never eat junk food just almost never :-) it's not good for you any way. It is kind of hard but you get used to it, as the mother just don't buy it and it won't be in the house so it won't be temping since it's not there :) that is what I did. Don't totally deprive yourself of stuff you like but eat in moderation.

Hope that helps, it helped me.

I am also trying to lose it. I was doing well, lost 30 lbs and then hit a plateau. I know that I need to step up my exercise and get back on my diet plan and your message is going to motivate. I am positive. You can lose it. I started by buying "The biggest loser" calorie counting book at Target. Then for the first 2 weeks, it never left my side. I was aiming for 1500 calories a day, but knew that I would hit more like 2000. I tried for 3 500 calorie meals, whole grains, and lots of vegetables kept me from hitting highs and lows. For snacks I ate low calorie things, 2 m & m's, etc, but mostly I would check the calorie content and look and see if there was something better.

A can of campbells chicken soup is 150 calories, heat and serve a few crackers (well, that's what I like anyway). Also, I am restarting my food journal (jsut a piece of paper on the counter and write down what i eat and how many calories, I find that I can quickly see if I have enough left at the end of the day for that chocolate bar and am motivated to save some for it.

Don't drink your calories. I counted one day last week and by 1pm I have drank 500 calories, and that was between my coffee(with cream and sugar) and my drink with lunch. Seriously, it wasn't worth it. Little changes like lowfat and sugar free creamer would have cut that in half. Anyway, that is what has worked for me ( and I have kept that 30 lbs off for 6 months) I think that I will jump back on the band wagon, start pushing the stroller on walks(you lose 30% more than jsut walking) and get the other 30 off. Eat slowly, put down your silverware between bites. Skip the nuts in brownie. If you must, eat only 1/2 a brownie. Write your calories on a cheap paper and throw it away every night... tomorrow is a new day and eating too much one days doesn't mean you should be punished by looking at that list the next day. You get to start with a new # of calories everyday.

Thanks for the motivation.

P.S. The first 2 weeks are hell. Hungry all the time,(because I didn't add more veggies) and then it was sooo easy.

Lots of water and lots of walking (I've heard monitoring your number of steps... 10,000 daily... helps even more). I'm a distributor for Shaklee, and I used their weight management bars and shakes. My almost three-year-old loves them, too. They really helped me. My ob/gyn okayed them, too, for while I was nursing. If you want to check out the website, it's www.shaklee.com. And, if you order through me (if you decide to go that route), I have some special discounts.
