Hello Moms you guys have been great with all my other inquires. ok my daughter has been sick with the flu. I took her to the dr. and before he admitted her to the hospital for dehydration her glucose was 140. 15 mins later he rechecked it and it was 125. She still isn't better the hospital released her because she stopped throughing up and she was eating ok. Since we have been home she can't keep anything down. She can drink water all day and eat toast. By 8 shes throwing all the water back up. If she has anything with sugar in it she throwing up. Other than that she fine she does say she has stomach pains and she doesn't look dehydrated but she's not eating. I want to g buy a glucose monitor and am not sure which one to buy? Could you give me your opinion? Also has anyones child been diagnosed and what where there symptoms? Because so far all my the symptoms I have read about discrib my daughter. Shes been sick since tuesday of this past week. Please give me suggestions. I do have a call into her pediatrician. But I want to go out tomorrow and buy a glucose machine.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I took my daughter back to the dr because even though she hasn't had real loose stool since saturday and she been drinking and acting fine since friday I was concerned because even though she ate and drank all day about an hr after going to bed or longer she got up and through up and she also had been complaining since Friday about a bad headace once a day. So I took her today and she has strep now. He said with the antibiotic hitting her sytem to day she shouldn't through up tonight and should be fine by tomorrow. But she won't be able to go back till wednesday.
I want to thank all moms for there responses. Exscpecially those who where positive and incouraging. I did want to let those who aren't sure about type I diabetes the symptoms are not only thirtsy and drinking alot and urinating but also severs stomach pain in which she had and throwing up in which she had. So Thats why I asked. I am real familiar with diabetes too because it runs in both sides of the familys my husbands and mine. So thank you very much to all who responded I appreciate everyones time and inquires. Thank You!

I don't have a child that is a diabetic but if I had I would look into giving that child a Drink called Performance. When I raised my son whenever he had a fever this helped him not to be dehydrated. Although I would pass all of the ingredients and info onto her Pediatrician.

Hi K.,
Diabetes runs in my family so I'm real familiar with the symptoms. First has your child lost a significant amount of weight? Does she have a thirst that can't seem to be quenched? Does your child urinate constantly? Buying a glucose tester would be a great idea just to ease your mind, get the one touch it's less painful. I would test her sugar level before you give her anything to eat/drink. Then again after she eats or drinks. The normail is around 90 to 150. 125 is within normal range for her being sick. Sugar levels tend to rise when you're sick. If it's somewhere around 175 or the 200's you need to contact her doctor to follow up with more testing. Also start looking for open wounds that woun't heal, diabetics are hard to heal when cut. Hopes this helps...

I would wait until you speak with her ped before buying a glucose monitor and just keep a close eye on her. There is a nasty flu bug going around. If she has diabetes you should also be noticing frequent urination (although maybe not now as she's been vomiting but previous to the vomiting) and a sugary (like maple syrup) smell to her breath along with unexplained weight loss. Childhood diabetes runs in families even more so than adult onset. Stress will affect blood glucose readings and 140 isn't really that high. With the information you gave I'm betting on the nasty flu bug but I'm not a doctor and I'm sure there are things you didn't mention. Regardless I would wait on the monitor and speak with her ped.

you should probably wait on buying a machine...if your pediatrician thinks she needs it, he will write a prescription and you can have it covered by your insurance.

I just had my seven year old tested because she was so thirsty all the time and goes to the bathroom frequently. I was convinced she had it because my nephew found out he had it with the same symptoms(but really intense thirst/urination). They were able to tell me she didn't have it from a urinalysis(and I was very grateful to God!). I would think that if this was a concern at the hospital while your daughter was getting 'rehydrated', they would have thoroughly checked her out...Type I Diabetes is nothing they take lightly/put off for another visit. Talk to your pediatrician and have them test her if you can't stop the expected worry we moms are cursed with, but I would personally skip buying the monitor at this point.

Also, your daughter is unable to keep food/anything down because her stomach has built up a 'reflux' reaction while she has been sick. she felth better with the IV bag because it rehydrated her without having to pass into her stomach/through her very unsettled intestines(I'm an expert here because i threw up all throughout my 3 pregnancies and LOVED those IV bags...it was the only time I felt good!!!). When our house had the stomach flu at christmastime...after my son felt 100%, he ate a homemade plain hamgurger on a bun and still threw up a day later. His stomach wasn't ready for hard-to-digest foods and wouldn't be for a few days. If your daughter felt better from the IV bag, that means that she will no longer throw up from dehydration...but food can still cause it. If she is actually hungry, get her on the good old BRAT diet (bananas, rice-plain, applesauce,toast...and anything that falls in that category of exceptinally bland, plain food). We got through the flu by taking soda crackers, iced pedialyte and ice chips in very limited amounts to ease our stomach back into it. In fact, food is not even necessary until she feels "hungry".
One last thing: I'm no expert whatsoever, but I don't think throwing up has anything to do with diabetes. Get a urine test to put your mind/heart at rest, but it sounds like she is fine as far as diabetes goes.

blood sugars of 125 and 140 are not diabetes.

do not buy a machine.

your blood sugars normally go up when you are sick and especially if she was vomiting and dehydrated.

these stomach bugs are nasty... and they take time to go away. keep doing the pedialyte and clear liquids her stomach will settle down and then she will be back to normal in a day or so..

My daughter ( now 17) was watched closely when she was younger, Her peds doctor would do a simple pee in a cup thing every 4 or 5 months to keep an eye on it, most insurances will pay for a monitor if you ask your doctor for a prescription. Talk to her doc and see what they say -- but just a cheap one from wal-mart or Walgreen is going to work just as wall as the most expensive ones and some even come with a rebate on them, then you can get a prescription for the test strips. Honestly it sounds like a bad case of the flu but if you are that worried about it take her to her doctor.

Just wanted to let you know that we all had the stomach flu and it lasted two weeks. I saw our doctor because my daughter especially was having a hard time recovering and kept on throwing up. Anyway we had to put her on a strict diet of DRY bagels (no butter cream cheese or anything), bananas (except she wouldnt eat those), prezels, jello, plain cheerios (no milk) and then gatorade or pedialite. It took four days of this diet but that did the trick. Basically anything we gave her other than this would trigger the reaction in her stomach with the 'bug'......and we would be back to square one. Thankfully, although it was difficult to stick to these foods we did it and she got better. Perhaps you are having the same thing and it is not a diabetes issue.....I dont know but wanted to share this in case it helps. Hope she feels better.

First, I am sorry that your daughter has been so sick - that stinks. Second, it doesn't sound like diabetes to me... I say that for a few reasons. 1) diabetes tends to be caught with a higher glucose reading than 145, which is really barely elevated. 2)typically children develop type 1 diabetes where their pancreas is no longer able to produce insulin, which has a specific test that can be performed for a definitive diagnosis. 3) when dehydrated glucose levels go up, if they had no gone down with hydration there would be more cause for concern. 4) The drinking water is not usual if she then throw is up later - she is probably not dehydrated to the point of going to the hospital at this point, but likely is dehydrated somewhat. 5) Throwing up anything with sugar in it is not a sign of diabetes... sugar irritates the lining of the stomach and often results in throwing up in the stomach flu.

That being said you know your daughter best - if you want to monitor her, all of the monitor are essentially the same thing. The differences are all about physical size and memory (how many readings they can store in their memory) and a few other little, minor differences. Good luck with her, and I hope she gets better quickly!

You didn't say clearly...has your daughter been diagnosed with diabetes? If she has, what type? If she hasn't, please don't subject her to the pain of testing. If she does, be sure to test on the side of her little fingers instead of the top. The nerve endings at the top of our fingers are so much more sensative! If she has type 2 diabetes, I control mine naturally and am happy to share how.

Good luck!
