Has Anyone Tried an Earchek Monitor to Detect Ear Infections?

I took my son in for his 18 month check up and was surprised to find out that he had an ear infection, I had no idea! Its a little worrisome that I wasn't able to tell and I only found out by chance. So now of course I keep suspecting that he has another ear infection, how would I know? I just read about a device called Earchek that supposedly can detect an ear infection. Have any of you used this? Does it actually work?

What can I do next?

Tried it and found it did not work after coming back from doc appt with diagnosis of double ear infection and the Ear Check saying all was normal. We returned it! Don't waste your $$$$

I bought the earcheck monitor and it does work. It gives you an idea of when the ear is filling with fluid by stages (green, yellow, red). Red is the danger zone. My daughter had swimmer's ear and I had no idea. She had complained that her ear was bothering her so I used the tool and it was red in one ear and yellow in the other. Took her in and sure enough she had the swimmer's ear. There was no fever, nothing so I am very glad I purchased. I would not use this as medical advise, just as a gauge to see when their ears are congested vs infected but always get a doctors opinion.

I don't know about Earchek.

If your son is irritable, running a fever or drainage from his ear, then that would be cause to take him to the doctor. Also, you can test to see if his hearing is diminished by rubbing your thumb and forefinger together next to his ear (try it on yourself). Try one ear at a time. If he doesn't respond when you make that quiet noise, then you might want to see if his hearing is impacted.

...Just a thought :-)

Hmmm...i don't use gadgets and have found that children and babies gave me all the clues i needed. Especially ear infections which can be very painfull. The constant crying and tugging at their ears is a sure indicator. Sleeping flat creates more pressure from the fluids invading the canal. Prop their head slightly.
I have a 30 year old who was plagued with ear infections when she was a babe and her younger brother who is now 9 has never had one.

My oldest had chronic ear infections from birth. We decided to do tubes at 10 months old. Since then "0"! We even had her on a long term low dose antibiotic 2X a day. I hated that. Plus it didn't work. The doctor mentioned this tool to us, but by then it was too late. We had begun surgery prep. I think that it's a GREAT idea. What a help. Peace of mind right?
Take care. -Sher

Hello S., my name is Taha. I have two young children ages 4 and 6. When my six year old was growing up I was so stressed he got ear infections every four months. It became such a problem the doctor recommended ear drains. Fortuantly God blessed and he doesn't get them anymore. Since your child may be prone to them the biggest signs are runny nose, pulling at the ear or not sleeping all thru the night. Ear infections seam to get worst at night when the child is lying down. If you suspect your child has a ear infection take he to the doctor immediately. My sons doctor was so cool he just kept a refill for me at the pharmacy. Not to frighten you he grew out of it, hope this helps.

In The Masters Service,

Taha

Hi S.,

My daughter had her first ear infection at 11 mo old and I found out the same way you did. She had a double ear infection and was so bad in one ear that it oozed "stuff". We were traveling (flying)and she had two back-to-back colds while we were gone and she did not show any of the tell tale signs of an ear ache!! I felt so bad for her when I took her into the pedi office and found out.

The good news...she was 11 months old when she got her first and has not had one since. It is possible that your son, like my daughter, copes with pain amongst other things, well. I have taken her to the pedi office twice since then thinking she may have one and she did not. She just turned three and still has not had any more. Your son was 18 months old at the time of his first so it is very unlikely that they will become common or harmful to him.

Don't get paranoid or spend a lot of money on gimmick products. There is no better assurance then your Dr.'s words. If he has a congested cold for a week or more then watch for signs...and above all...TRUST YOUR INSTINCT! You should never feel too that you can not call or visit your pediatrician anytime for anything.

Good luck!!
