Has Anyone Traveled with an Infant on a Train?

We live approximately 9 hours from our family and drove it when our daughter was 3 months old. The trip turned into a 13 hour car ride with all of the stopping for nursing and stretching. We took two days to come back, but again, it was horrible. We have looked at airline tickets but they are very expensive and I'm not sure I want to take our daughter (now 5.5 months old) on a plane. We found a train route that will take us around 10-12 hours (depending on where we decide to depart). It looks very appealing. It is only $100 more than driving, but we would be able to keep the baby out of her carseat and be more interactive with her on the trip (so we think). We have never ridden on a train before. Can you tell me what I should expect? Do they allow you to bring food/drink and other liquids? (not sure if similar to an airport) Any other suggestions would be beneficial. Thank you!

So What Happened?

We took the train (Amtrak) from St. Paul to Chicago and back last week! It was a GREAT experience! It was inexpensive ($230 for my husband and I, roundtrip), it was COMFORTABLE, and when we got to Chicago we still had energy to drive the last 3 hours. I highly recommend this form of travel for any family. There is about 2 times the amount of space at the seats than an airline, the seats recline with a leg support, you can get up and move as much as you want, the restrooms are easy to use and clean, there is an electric outlet at each set of seats for your use, and the lounge car is a great place to play any board games or just watch the scenary. I highly recommend you pack your own food and drinks. Food and drinks were available, but expensive. Thanks to those of you who encouraged us to do this. It made our trip much more enjoyable! BTW, the baby was so good that people commented later about it. :)

Hi J.,
We took the train from Mpls/St.Paul depot to Milwaukee last August. The kids loved it. We packed our own sandwiches, water and snacks. They do have a dining car but that seemed to be quite expensive and we would rather have saved the $ for a nicer sit down restraunt, one that doesn't move. Also there is a guy that comes around to the regular cars too offering stuff for sale, but again$$$ for what you can bring from home. The little conveincence store on board, is nice for a hotter meal if you/kids are still hungry after eating your home food.

I agree with everyone here. We currently live overseas and the train is one of the main ways to travel here as well. My kids love it! They can get up and stretch and you can bring your own snacks an food. The trip just flys by.

we LOVE the train- it is the only way besides driving to get to my home town (12-14 hrs). it is way roomier than a plane, and it has the lounge car etc for louder children to roam (more important as the kids get older and more antsy) we always pack coolers for meals (yes, you can bring food, drinks whatever, and there is a dining car, with glorified frozen meals at extra cost, and usually a "convenience store" type place) i know that different routes have different amenities though. and when they stop for "re-stocking" you can get off and walk around outside if you like (usually like a 30 min stop- though not too often, so i don't know when/where it would be for your route) when our kids are that age on the train, we bring a blanket to put at our feet and let them play with some toys (there is that much room!) there really are no inconvenient restrictions to us... also, to get on the train is little security issues (never yet seen x-ray machines =) ) and people can walk out onto the platform with you at most places

I'm living in Europe right now and here we dont have a car. So the train is the major mode of transportation. I cant say exactly what the trains look like there in the States so much but here we love traveling by train. You can walk around with the little ones if you can find an area that isnt as used you can lay out a little blanket for them to pay on so they can roll around and play. Here they even have a little play area. You can bring what ever you want or need to eat drink or play with. My daughter is much happier on the train than she is when we are in a car. I would definitely suggest the train over riding in a car that long.
