Has Anyone Taught Their Own Child to Play an Instrument?

I used to play the trumpet. I was really, really good (not 'tooting my own horn' [pun intended], but I was great!)... I just dug my trumpet out of the closet, and played for my 5 and 7 year old daughters. They want to learn. GREAT!!... but where to start? I have all my old beginners books and everything, but where do you really start? I've been playing since 4th grade. I can't remember if you start by learning to count notes and read music or what. The beginner books really didn't help much by way of curriculum. I also have a french horn I'd like to teach them (since it's so similar... and why not?!)

So has anyone taught their child to play an instrument? Which instrument? How old was the child? How did you begin?

Thanks :)

What can I do next?

I played the trumpet too!! how funny!!!

my boys wanted the violin!! I can't teach myself!!

I just asked Greg what his teacher did when he first started out playing and he said the teacher taught them about the instrument first - the parts, cleaning and care and then to read the music...with the violin they were "plucking" it and not playing it.

The Euphonium - Greg was just taught about it and then how to get the air through the mouthpiece to make the music!

I play the piano. I have since I was 10 years old. I have tried to teach my kids. They mostly like to just make up their own song by themselves, but my daughter who is 6 has been asking me to teach her. I started out by teaching her to read the music first. You can't sit down and play a song with out knowing how to read the music first. She picked up on it right away. I would make little quizes for her too, and she did great. It's been a little while, but if she wants to learn of course I would teach her. Sometimes I think that kids learn and listen better with someone else though. I think if she really wanted lessons, I would hire a teacher and if she ever needed help, then of course I would help her. My son, he loves music. He has no interest in learning right now, he is turning 4 today, but he loves to sing! He is a really good singer too. Totally in tune and even sang "the Climb" to his preschool teacher and made her cry!

Coming from a family of music teachers, it's very hard to teach your own child to play an instrument. I'm not sure why even excellent teachers are unable to teach their own kids, but it just doesn't seem to work. Since you know your stuff - you'll be able to pick out a good teacher for your daughters. You'll definitely be able to help them when they're practicing, or if they have any questions, but let someone else do the official "teaching." Best of luck!

My dad is teaching my four year old how to play guitar.

He has alot of patience.

I would never attempt this....but my dad may open a door with this.

He figures if he can teach my little one to play then maybe he could teach other kiddo's. We will wait and see:)

Hi R.-

I did not teach my kids to play an instrument per se...But one x mas (early on...eldest was 6 or so) 'santa' brought an electric key board for the kids to share. ***and headphones for mom***

I sing...play piano only to plunk out my notes...but there were stickers to put on the middle range keys...and some beginning 'play the piano' books for kids. They all could 'read' music by the time they were taught in school. They all started in school with recorders (envision a flute sound with a 'finger nails in chalk board' quality!! lol)

Then...in middle school years...most of the boys went for sax (BADLY!!!) and the girls with flute. ALL sing fairly well...but mostly, when younger...had them have fun on keyboard (with those head phones!)

Have fun!! Never too young to 'expose' them to music...but follow their lead!

Have fun!!
